HITS HORSE SHOWS IN THE SUN

Tack Room Judging Contest at Indio Desert Circuit,
Saturday, February 10, 10am-12pm

INDIO, CA (February 8, 2001)--On Saturday, February 10, from 10am-12pm, four judges from the interior design and gardening community will be touring the HITS Desert Horse Park, marking their ballots for the winners in this year's Tack Room contest. There are more than 3,000 stalls on the grounds, many of them--and sometimes an entire barn--are grouped under one trainer's barn name and serve not only as stabling for the horses, but as an office for the professional riders and trainers, and their clients and horse owners. Creating a professional and attractive look for their business while at the six-week hunter/jumper horse show is part of setting up and living at the event. Most barns have a special color or décor that is carried out through all the accoutrements, from buckets and blankets to flowers and draperies, and themes that range from antiques to psychedelic. These elaborate trappings and landscaping designs will determine the winners.

The Judges will inspect the 80-acre HITS Desert Horse Park in golf carts and decide on three placings--First, Second, and Third--in two categories--Permanent Barns and Temporary Barns. One of the barns from that short list of six will be awarded the Overall Grand Championship. The winners will be announced and prizes awarded in the Grand Prix Field on Sunday, February 11, during the break before the Jump-Off during the $75,000 Bayer/USET Grand Prix presented by HorseCity.com--a World Cup Final qualifying event.

This year's judges are:
1) Vicki McDermott, Indian Wells, CA. Home Designer, Licensed General Contractor, and CA Certified Interior Designer.

2) Grace Cazarez, Palm Desert, CA. Interior Designer. Owner/operator of Grace Interiors & Upholstery in Palm Desert.

3) Shirley Brenon, Palm Desert, CA. Award-winning gardener and flower arranger. Columnist for the The Desert Sun 'Desert Home' Section on Sundays.

4) Kazumi Komar, Oakland, CA. Interior Designer for 25 years. Kazumi recently launched Blue Mountain Biscuit Company, maker of high quality horse
treats called Grand Prix Horse Biscuits.

The Tack Room contest winners will be awarded prizes from the following Desert Marketplace Vendors and product lines: Blue Mountain Biscuits; Cathrin Cammett Photography; Cloud Nine Saddle Pads; Ermilio Clothing & Specialty Shop Ltd.; Paul Mason Photography; Shaw's Saddlery Tack Shop; The Stirrup Cup; The Tack Trunk; and Video In Demand.
