Equine Intelligence
Supporting the BHS with its Approved Livery Yard Scheme
To keep control of the ever escalating cost of insurance or perhaps obtain insurance at all, equine businesses must sustain an increasingly professional approach, making good stable administration and risk assessment a daily process. Equine Intelligence provides an easy-to-follow programme of administration, enabling you to run a more professional and financially rewarding business.
As insurance fees have risen steeply following 11th Sept 2001 and claims increased due to no-win-no-fee contracts, the insurance industry is demanding greater evidence of good practice before offering public liability covers. Million pound claims within the equestrian industry are not uncommon and insurers are becoming increasingly uneasy about renewing contracts and taking on new clients. Barry Fehler of South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) has described the situation as a "serious closing down of this market".
The BHS is advising businesses to look towards safety and anticipate potential claims by implementing risk assessment and administration procedures. Their Approved Livery Yard Scheme requires the keeping of written livery contracts, land management schedules, and all aspects of health, safety and medical administration. Chris Doran, administrative manager of Riding Schools/Approvals at the British Horse Society states, "I cannot advise too strongly on the need for attention to detail."

Training Online
If you are a horseman involved with a breeding operation, finding a few free minutes can be hard at this time of the year.
But Leslie Mongeur of DeLand, Florida is finding the time to attend school at Allegany College of Maryland. She's taking the online course, Training Performance Horses.
"Being able to learn at my own pace was the key attraction when I first read about the course," Mongeur said. "I knew the season was coming and I wouldn't be able to take all the lessons on a regimented schedule. But as soon as the horses settle do for the evening, and I have the time, I'll turn on the computer and I won't have missed a thing."
In addition to caring for nine horses, primarily Paso Finos, and running a pet grooming shop, Mongeur is just as busy as most horse owners. Time is precious. That's why nationally-know author and trainer Don Blazer designed the internet course, Training Performance Horses. Now students can get lessons whenever they can find some free time. There is no time limit for completing the course, but when it is finished students receive a Certificate of Recognition.

2003 Sidelines Equestrian Triathlon Presented By Outback Steakhouse Set For March 10
WELLINGTON, FL (February 13, 2003) — The third annual Sidelines Equestrian Triathlon Presented By Outback Steakhouse will be presented on Monday, March 10, 2003, starting at noon, at the Outback Polo Club on Southfields Road in West Palm Beach, Florida. “It’s the perfect event for Sidelines to do because Sidelines covers dressage, show jumping, and polo. It’s a natural tie-in for us,” said Samantha Charles, publisher of Sidelines and organizer of the event. “My plan is to eventually run triathlons around the country.”
In previous years, the triathlon was held as a charity benefit. The $25 admission ticket helped fund equestrians stricken with terminal illness, and the admission charge included an Outback lunch. This year admission will be free to all equestrians and lunch will be provided at a nominal fee. Tim Gannon, a lifelong polo player and one of the three founding members of Outback Steakhouse and Carabas restaurant chains, has donated his private polo club for the event every year, and continues to be the presenting sponsor as well as the event’s lunch concessionaire.
The Sidelines Equestrian Triathlon features top riders in three disciplines who compete against each other in four teams of three riders.

Through The Horse's Mouth - The Right Food For The Right Horse
Horses, like people, have issues with food. The wrong feed, the wrong nutritional combinations and the wrong timing can all contribute to making a horse perform below par and feel under the weather.
A well-fed horse is a happy horse, and no organisation is more aware of this than Baileys Horse Feeds whose nutritionist Kate Lugsden will be part of the Meet the Experts area at the Midlands Equine Fair, Three Counties Showground, Malvern on 8 and 9 March.
Kate will be on hand to answer any questions about equine nutrition from visitors to the Fair, but in anticipation of this we asked her to answer the top 10 questions that are posed to her and her team:

Almost One Year Already!!
The idea had been planted for a while in the minds of Jean d'Orgeix, Michel Henriquet and Christian Carde when they founded - less than a year ago - Allege-Ideal. It had to become a reality and that was achieved with great enthusiasm since the support this initiative received was fabulous.
Honored by the patronage of Maurice Druon and a prestigious honorary committee, the association is proud to include today nearly 200 members, spread over 16 countries.
Wishing to gather under the banner of lightness riders from the four corners of the world and, from all the equestrian disciplines was the challenge to take up:
Allege-Ideal met it!
They are amateur riders, competitors, judges, breeders, equestrian arts enthusiasts, trainers, leaders …. The cosmopolitan and eclectic nature of the association contributes to its wealth and its strength.
During this first year, the activities of Allege-Ideal were essentially based on communication: representing the association in meetings and interactions with major equestrian organizations, participating to a variety of conferences and debates (in France and other countries), publishing the first issue of the association's newsletter, organizing the "Video consulting" service and creating a web site: www.allege-ideal.com
In 2003, we will expand our activities through organizing conferences, sensitivity meetings in equestrian centers, to benefit riders and instructors as well. We will very shortly provide a list of organizations and interlocutors - in France and in other countries - you will be able to contact on our behalf to establish all the practical and useful connections with Allege-Ideal.

The British Horse Society British Horse Society accepts court decision
The Board of Trustees of the BHS defends the interests of members by fighting Public Inquiries against the downgrading of bridleways to footpaths. For the first time in 30 years the Society, having lost a case, faces paying the costs of the other parties.
The Trustees are very concerned at this outcome and have thoroughly investigated the Secretary of State's grounds for her decision.
Detailed advice has been taken by the Trustees, and the Board has decided it is in the best interests of the Society to pay these costs rather than apply for Judicial Review.

Reigning World Jumper Champion from Ireland Competing at The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival
Wellington, Florida – February 11, 2003 – Dermott Lennon, the handsome, 33-year-old Irishman, who is the reigning Jumper Champion of the World, has just arrived in Wellington to begin competing at The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival. His World Champion mare, “Liscalgot”, a 12-year-old Irish-bred, will arrive later this month.Dermott and “Liscalgot” won the World Champion title this past September in Jerez, Spain at The World Games. They will hold this prestigious moniker until the next World Games in 2006.
Dermott’s exceptional ascent to fame in the equestrian world began at the family farm in the quiet town of Banbridge in tumultuous Northern Ireland. There, Dermott and his brother, John, began riding in local hunts and steeplechases while finishing their schooling. In 1989 at the age of 19, Dermott began riding for a local breeder, breaking and schooling the very young horses. By 1999, Dermott was showing grand prix jumpers in international competitions.
Dermott never had any formal equestrian training in the traditional sense. Dermott just displayed an innate talent with horses from an early age that only a lucky few are born with. He was literally self-taught, and he has never taken a riding lesson or worked with a trainer. Dermott is his own trainer, and, often, his own groom – a virtual one-man-band, so to speak. At Dermott’s level of achievement and competition, that is absolutely unheard of.

Happy event at San Patrignano stud
Happy event at San Patrignano stud: on saturday 8th February 2003 the second Weihaiwej's foal has born. The foal's father is Voltaire, one of the most important Hannover sires whose sons are, among the others, internationals winners like Concorde, Flyer, Kannan, Helios, etc.
"The foal, born by an embryo transfer, does not have a name. Indeed, we haven't been able yet to find an appropriate name made of a Chinese word beginning with "V", the letter which will mark all the newborn foals in 2003." Giacomo Muccioli, responsible of the San Patrignano's breeding farm, says. Rural Diversification Is Open To Anyone With Ambition And Drive
Beaver Hall Equestrian Centre, situated in the Staffordshire Moorlands has quickly become one of the best equine competition centres in the Midlands. The former 82-acre dairy farm was purchased in February 2001. The new owners, David Kinsella and Anne Pearn made the bold step of selling their 22 year-old established business and country home, in order to set up and develop this new rural business.
Their combined passion for horses and nose for business made them aware that the area lacked a friendly equestrian centre with good facilities, in which people of all abilities felt comfortable to compete.
Work was quickly undertaken, involving huge personal capital investment. The main barn was refurbished into 18 high quality stables, a horse-walker installed, shower room and tack room built. Outside three arenas were under construction along with the installation of an all weather gallop, cross country course and car parking facilities.
Any rider visiting the Beaver Hall Equestrian Centre has the benefit of an excellent professional staff who will offer assistance, advice, support and lots of hard work to encourage and develop their skills and indulge their passion for horses. The centre is now undergoing some exciting new changes.
A new development for 2003 has been the purchase of a Cold Water Hydrotherapy Spa imported from Australia, for the treatment of lower leg injuries in horses. (One of only 6 in the country). The spa has had exceptional results in tendon and ligament injuries, joint conditions, healing of wounds and bone damage. The spa has been housed in yet another renovated farm building.

You have audited Peter Campbell at international events like the Canadian Finals Rodeo or the Spruce Meadows Masters. Maybe you’ve heard him on the Horseman’s Radio Weekly with Jim Campbell. Read about him in select issues of the Western Horseman, Northern Horse Review or Trails Less Traveled.
It really doesn’t matter where you’ve seen or heard the name ~ it matters that you and your horse join Peter for a journey of classical horsemanship. Just because it’s called Horsemanship doesn’t mean it’s only western or english ~ remember this it’s a philosophy of why and how the horse operates.
Peter Campbell is an artist, a student of the horse, one of the very few clinicians today who has made his living a horseback. Incorporating his life experiences along with the heritage of the vaquero, Campbell is able to bring his students over 25 years of horse wisdom.

The British Horse Society is to focus its welfare resources more specifically at prevention of neglect to equines by developing its on-going role of education.
The charity has always recognised that it has a key role to play in raising welfare standards for horses. The decision has been taken by the BHS Board of Trustees to re-focus the Society's resources currently spent on its national rescue centre in order to build on the expertise that already exists within the BHS to provide more education in the campaign to prevent cases of neglect.
Since its opening six years ago, over 200 horses and ponies have been taken into care and successfully re-homed following rehabilitation at the BHS' Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, at Oxhill in Warwickshire. The current equine inhabitants are all due to be re-homed before the Centre finally closes in September 2003.

"You learn a lot, from basic techniques to some very helpful advanced training methods," says Susan Dahl-Mitchell of Burgessville, Ontario, Canada. "I really loved the online availability of the material and the self-paced system."
The riding and showing of reining horses is nothing new to Dahl-Mitchell; she's been doing it for nearly a decade. To most of her friends, she is known as "ReinerSue." Stud Farm Is A Galloping Success Overseas
A Northumberland stud farm has won new international trade contracts worth up to £15, 000 as a result of participating in the 'Your passport to export success'* programme provided by Trade Partners UK - the government body dedicated to providing UK companies with global expertise on international trade and investment.
Otterburn-based Girsonfield Stud, launched just four years ago, signed up to the trade programme in March last year in a bid to export its services to Greece. With help from Trade Partners UK, the company attended a series of meetings with broodmare owners in Greece and collaborated with stud farm owners who now send heir 'retired' racehorses to Girsonfield. The company also produced Greek flyers and advertised their services in a new Greek horse racing magazine.
Susan Corbett, owner of Girsonfield Stud explained, "We have secured a number of new clients as a result of our visit to Greece. Being a small company, it would have been virtually impossible for us to explore such export opportunities alone. Trade Partners UK provided us with much needed funding and also gave us the confidence to approach a new market."

The Training Tree: Straightness
WAVERLY, WV--We get halfway up the training tree before we introduce the concept of straightness to the horse. We spend the first months of a horse's training working on rhythm, relaxation, and freedom of gaits. In this early phase of training, we want him to feel comfortable carrying the weight of a rider. In the second phase of his training, we start to develop the quality of his forward movement. We ask him to accept the contact between the bit and our hand. Toward the end of his first year of training, we put our focus on straightness.
Straightness is a pretty easy concept but a lot of people mythunderstand it. It does not mean the direction the horse is moving. Whether he appears to be standing or moving crooked when you look at him is not the point. What straightness means is that the horse's entire body from nose to tail is in alignment with an imaginary line on the ground. That line might happen to be parallel a fence or it might be running down the middle of an arena. But a horse can travel "straight" on a circle just as well.
In order to travel straight, the horse has to be able use and coordinate the muscles on both sides of his body to an equal degree. All horses are crooked by nature. They all have one side that they prefer to turn on and one side that they don't. Some people refer to this as a horse having a stiff side and a hollow side.If a horse is stronger on his right side, it's easier for him to turn to the left so that's the side he'll turn to when he's fleeing from danger and that's the canter lead he'll tend to favor.
This should be easy to understand because most people aren't straight, either. People have a dominant side that they prefer to use, too. You learned to write with the hand on that side and you don't try to change unless you break that arm. There isn't any reason that you couldn't write as well with one hand as the other. But, basically because we don't see any big need for it, we don't try. The horse sees things the same way. So it's the trainer's job to help him work on both sides and develop his muscles evenly.

Organizing the Social aspects of this year’s AHJF Hunter Classic Spectacular is MASON PHELPS, JR.
For most people, being named to a U.S. Olympic Team and being named horseman of the year would be a highlight of a career. For Mason Phelps, it was simply a start. In 1968, Mason was honored by the USCTA as its Horseman of the Year, and his mount, West Country, was the USCTA Horse of the Year. The USET selected Mason to its five-rider squad for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. Despite this and other success as an eventing rider, Mason had yet to take his first step toward establishing his real claims to fame in the world of equestrian sports. Far beyond his abilities as a horseman, what sets Mason apart is the scale on which he does things and the style that he brings to all of his projects. It is the magnitude of his projects and the pizzazz with which he does them that makes Mason unique. Few people combine intelligence, diligence and vision the way Mason does.
