14th April 2001 Red Hills Horse Trials 2001
By Rita Juanita Mock
The fourth annual Red Hills Horse Trials were held this year on March 9-11, in Tallahassee, Florida. This combined training 3 day event took place at the Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park, welcoming 250 horses and over 500 volunteers. More than 12,000 spectators showed up to watch as well, including eight year old Sarah Tepper, daughter of Dave and Lois Tepper. “I just liked all of it…I just like to see the riders jump…its really cool!”
Friday started Red Hills off with a cloudy day of dressage, and, even though the crowds were rather low that day, the competitors did not lose their spirit of excitement. Ralph Hill of Ocala, Florida, on Winston, placed first in the Training Horse division Group A, with a dressage score of 33.5, which they maintained for the rest of Red Hills with no cross-country or show jumping penalties. Kelli McMullen Templ, also of Ocala, Florida, pulled off 26.5 dressage penalties riding Barber’s Berber in the Training Horse division group B, achieving the lowest dressage score at Red Hills this year.
David O’Connor, competitor:
"It’s one of the top horse trials in the country, the whole community gets behind it…one of the premier events…it’s a joy to go to."

The British Horse Society First Equine Specific First Aid Course From The BHS
After much consultation with the horse industry and first aid training organisations, the British Horse Society has developed an Equine-specific First Aid course. This one-day course will be presented by trainers who have expertise in horse-related injuries and accidents. The day will include generic first aid skills and requirements in the morning and horse-specific first aid in the afternoon. Courses will be organised throughout the UK (see list so far on following page).
The Health and Safety Executive applaud and encourage industry taking the lead in the design of industry-specific, appropriate and relevant qualifications. HSE fully supports the BHS in the development of the first, Equine-specific First Aid course.
This one-day first aid course will also be useful for examiners, grooms, competitors, fence judges and volunteers - in fact anyone involved in equestrian activities.

Pearl the Pony The Story of Pearl the Pony
Pearl is an 18-year-old Shetland pony that was rescued in horrid condition. She had worms, anemia and was tied to a tree, forcing her to stand on hooves that were 14-16 inches long. Needless to say, she was crippled. After several failed attempts to get the appropriate authorities involved, a neighbor was able to rescue Pearl, and get her on the road to recovery.
Unfortunately, 2 months later, due to an improper wrapping , Pearl lost circulation in one of her legs. This led to gangrene and eventually the loss of a major portion of one of her legs. This is usually an automatic death sentence for a horse.
But Pearl surprised everyone by continuing to walk and graze. Pearls strong-will and determination to live bought her some much needed time as her vet and her owner searched for answers. On Christmas Day, Pearl got a remarkable opportunity - a chance at a prosthetic! This is still rare at the moment and in the research stage (for horses). Pearl is in Virginia at Serenity Equine, where it could take 6-9 months for the whole procedure. A small price to pay for a little pony who deserves so much!

10th April 2001 Essential oils and COPD
COPD is largely what I call a "Oman made" disease. With increasing numbers of horses kept in for months on end sometimes with little or no turn out, COPD has become increasingly common. It is basically an allergic reaction to dust, fungal spores and other airborne irritants and is aggravated by life in poorly ventilated stables, lack of fresh air and dusty foodstuff and bedding. Having said that, it is also possible for horses to be allergic to pollen and show distressed breathing patterns when turned out. I tend to think that increased pollutants in the air and the number of horses living in semi-urban environments is a contributing factor.
If caught in the early stages COPD can be effectively managed... however the longer the condition goes unacknowledged the more sensitised the lungs become, leading to a more acute problem and increased discomfort for the horse. Please click here to continue

9th April 2001 Irish Horses in Sweden
Last year I got an Irish imported pony. His name is Ryan. Before I got him I was mainly interested in the Swedish Warmblood and their pedigrees, breeders etc. But when I got my Irish pony my interest in the Irish horses started to wake. In Sweden there is many Irish imported horses and ponies that no one really knows anything about. They just exist and have no papers at all. Some of them do but most don't.
I wanted to try and create something that could bring people together so we could exchange information about our horses. All of them must have been "babies" at some time and maybe someone wonder whatever happened to their horse after being exported to Sweden. So thats why I have created the site about Irish Horses.

The Poitevin The Poitevin
Born and bred in the marshes of Western France, the Poitevin is the least known of nine French heavy breeds, and the most endangered. Its reputation was made by the magnificent mules bred by the mares for centuries, the biggest and strongest mules in the world! But as a horse it was sneered at as "a heavy horse that has more conformational faults than most, is singularly unattractive in appearance and has little potential as a working horse" according to Elwyn Hartley Edwards.
Yet, as a descendant of the Flemmish horses brougth to Poitou in the 17th century to drain the marshes, it is related to the Shire - and hence to the Clydesdale - whose ancestors came from Holland to reclaim the Fens.
Whilst most heavy horses were bred for specific purposes - including meat production - the only work required of the Poitevin was that it sired enough mares to provide for the booming mule trade. It has therefore retained all the characteristics of the "primitive" horse, including the rare dun colour. It is lighter than most draught horses and its gait is sprightly; when black, it is a heavy friesan, abundant feathers and flowing mane and tail.
