Improved Hickstead Equine Event Promises More Bargains
Better parking, an improved catering area, separate coffee bar - and bargains galore!
That's the message for the second year of the Hickstead Equine Event to be held at the All England Jumping Course on January 10, 11 and 12.
Last year's opening Event broke all its launch targets in attendance and sales, but organising group Primary Sport Management's David Crockford is convinced that this year's will be even bigger and better.
"We have modified and redesigned everything which caused minor irritations, but the most important thing is that the traders did very well and will be encouraged to do even more in the way of post-Christmas bargains," he said.
The public forums - where team managers from showjumping, dressage and horse trials talked about plans and problem solving - are also being re-shaped. "They were extremely popular with the public and we are building on that success to present something even better this year," said Mr Crockford.

A solution to tendon problems ?
Dr David Chapman-Jones, a specialist in sport and exercise medicine, writes this important article about tendons. In association with the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, City University, London and a number of European Medical Centres he has focused his research and clinical activities on soft-tissue disorders, particularly those seen in tendons. Dr Chapman-Jones has studied the way they work, heal and why they cause so many problems to both humans and horses.
A solution to tendon problems ?
From both a functional and biological perspective tendons
in humans are so similar to those found in animals what applies to one species could, and often does,
equally apply to another.
This is an important factor to bear in mind when designing, researching and evaluating new treatment regimes
Tendons, like a lot of things in life, are not given a moments thought until they go wrong - and when they do go wrong, as many athletes and horse owners will testify, oh dear, do they go wrong! Imagine the gripe of pain, like tooth ache, every time you move your arm or leg then imagine this becoming progressively worse and lasting, in some cases, for years.
This paints a depressingly dark picture but what makes it blacker is the apparent lack of coherent treatment regimes available to sufferers. This appears to be equally as true in the equine world as the human one. So is there an answer as how to reliable and reproducibly treat tendon problems in humans or horses? I believe there is - micro-current, clinically and scientifically proven to be the most effective method to date to treat both chronic and acute disorders in tendons and ligaments.

Hickstead To Stage New M&M Championship At RIHS
Hickstead, encouraged by the rapidly growing interest in Mountain and Moorland classes, is to introduced a new British Show Pony Society championship at next year's (subs - 2003) Royal International Horse Show.
It will be the culmination of a series with qualifying classes at up to 25 shows nationwide and will be held on the Thursday of the RIHS, provisionally scheduled for July 23-27.
Mountain and Moorland ridden classes are acknowledged as one of the fastest growth areas of the British showing calendar, alongside those for coloured horses and ponies. The RIHS successfully introduced coloured classes on to its schedule in 2002.
Hickstead saw the need for a mid-summer championship which will encourage early-season competitions around the country. It recognised that the BSPS, with its proven links with the RIHS, would be the ideal partner because of its large membership and high number of affiliated shows.
The new series will be called the BSPS Heritage Mountain and Moorland Championship and be made up of Open Leading Rein, Open First Ridden, Mini Championship, three Open Ridden classes and an Open Ridden Championship.

Tedra Bates Wins the 2002 BET/USET Show Jumping Talent Search Final-West
Gladstone, NJ—September 26, 2002—Tedra Bates of Carmel, CA, won the 2002 BET/United States Equestrian Team (USET) Show Jumping Talent Search Final-West, held at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, CA, September 18-22.
Bates, who placed fifth in last year’s Final, finished in front of Andrew Ramsay of Oakland, CA, who took second. Third place went to Matthew Sereni of Los Altos, CA.
The BET/USET Talent Search Finals on the East and West coasts are open to equitation riders under the age of 21, who have qualified through their placement in regional BET/USET Show Jumping Talent Search classes held throughout the year.

The BET/USET Show Jumping Talent Search Final, one of the nation’s most prestigious equitation competitions, consists of four competition phases designed to provide competitors with a challenging and rigorous final and help the USET identify future international competitors. In the flat phase, riders perform specific tests of their riding skills without jumps; in the gymnastic phase, riders jump combinations of obstacles. During the jumping phase, competitors negotiate a grand prix style jumping course of fences. Only the top four riders return to begin the fourth phase, a ride-off. During this final phase, riders compete with their own horse over a course of jumps, and then ride each of the other entries’ horses over the same course.

Statement Issued On Behalf Of SJAI Chairman, Tony Hurley
At a meeting of the Show Jumping Association Executive in Dublin on Tuesday, September 24, it was decided that the North Wexford Show should retain the Grand Prix status accorded to it as part of the 2002 Kerrygold Grand Prix League.
As this decision did not change the points awarded to riders who competed, Francis Connors remains the Kerrygold Grand Prix League Champion. However, the Executive was concerned that the initial allocation of the North Wexford Show had led to Conor Swail lodging an objection to the overall League result, in which he finished second.
It was decided because of the issue that arose in these exceptional circumstances, Conor Swail would be offered financial reward similar to that given to the League winner, by way of compensation for the misunderstanding that had arisen over the North Wexford Show. That offer has now been made to him in writing.

Aromatherapy for Your Horse
presented by Catherine Bird ~ Author ~ A Healthy Horse the Natural Way (New Holland Publishers)
Catherine will be presenting her weekend clinic on aromatherapy and the use of essential oils at Homeway Farm, Glastonbury UK 12 and 13 October and Westminster MD USA 19 and 20 October.
This interesting weekend will begin with looking at how aromatherapy has developed to give the participant an understanding of the foundation behind the application of essential oils with horses. Essential oils can have an effect on the body on many levels.
The role aromatherapy has to play with the life of the horse is varied and there are certain situations where aromatherapy will enhance the environment and others where competition rules may restrict the use of essential oils. The student will be made aware of the wonders and the limitations of this therapy in a sensible, commonsense approach. The student will also learn how to understand the horse’s reactions to each scent and in doing so understand the innate understanding the horse has of his own needs.

USET Makes History at 2002 World Equestrian Games
A Record 8 Medals Brought Home

Jerez de la Frontera, Spain–September 24, 2002–The United States Equestrian Team (USET) made history at the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, September 11-22. U.S. riders, drivers and vaulters won a total of eight medals, doubling the U.S.’s best previous performance.

The final tally for the U.S. was three Gold, three Silver and two Bronze medals, by far the best U.S. performance at any World Equestrian Games. U.S. teams won World Championship medals in six of the seven disciplines, doing better than any country, including France, who won seven medals in four disciplines, and Germany, who did win nine medals, but in only three disciplines.
“This is a proud moment for all Americans,” said USET President Armand Leone, Jr. “Not only does this record-setting performance speak volumes about the ability, dedication and hard work of our athletes and their support staff, but it is also a tribute to the many thousands of Americans whose contributions to the USET helped provide the resources needed to put our athletes in a position to get the job done.”

SEIB Leads The Search For Olympic Gold
Likely future stars of showing, dressage, showjumping and eventing will be named at this year's Horse of the Year Show, thanks to South Essex Insurance Brokers.
The company, which bases its national operation in Essex, is supporting both the Search for a Star and British Equestrian Federation Young Horse Evaluation series, both designed to discover horses capable of achieving national and international fame.
The South Essex Insurance Brokers/BEF Young Horse Evaluation Series has been running countrywide qualification classes, from which 38 horses have been named to go forward to the HOYS. The series is aiming to identify horses, and most importantly, bloodlines, on which future Olympic gold medal wins can be based.
Search for a Star, now in its seventh year, gives owners and riders their chance to compete at this leading show, and also identifies horses and ponies capable of national showing success. So far it has found two HOYS champions and one reserve champion as well as several going on to County show wins.

Horse Welfare Charity Welcomes UK Stance on Animals Moving to Slaughter in the EU
At a televised debate on animal welfare at yesterday's (Monday 23 September) EU Agriculture Council, Margaret Beckett, DEFRA Secretary of State pushed for shorter journey times for animals moving to slaughter in the EU. She went on to say that they should be introduced without delay.

Says Jo White, Campaigns Manager at the ILPH, "We are extremely pleased that the Government wants to see a reduction in the maximum journey time for animals travelling to slaughter from the present 24 to 28 hours which we feel is totally unacceptable."

The "Auvergne Equestre Endurance" organized their first CEI** Masters Ride on the 21st. September in the delightful spa town of Néris les Bains.
The ride took place in favorable weather conditions, and although there were certain muddy spots due to previous heavy rain overall the going was generally good.
The first 2 stages, respectively 38 and 32 kms. which were considered to be the most technically difficult due to undulating terrain did not take as big a toll as had been originally visualized. The 4th. and final stage of 28 kms. was a very fast galloping stage, which led to a very exciting finish.

Air transport of competition horses to WEG in Jerez 2002
By Michaela Bowles
Air Contractors operating for DHL is the airline carrying the competition horses to the World Equestrian Games, currently underway in Jerez, Spain.
The horses are amazing in their confidence and fortitude. It is a given that all the horses that travel are seasoned travellers, not least in air travel. Many have been to Australia for the Olympic games. Still, it seems incredible that they are prepared to walk up a noisy ramp 12 feet (3m) into the sky. Although the ramp is high-sided, and a 15-16hh horse would not be able to see over the sides, these giants of the international equestrian world: Dressage, Show jumpers and Eventers, some standing at 17.5hh could see exactly where they are going!
Once inside the aircraft, they stand un-perturbed as the grooms built stalls around them in order to contain them. Many are so tall that those most sensitive of antennae, the tips of their ears are in constant contact with the interior shell of the fuselage.
The interior of the aircraft has all the usual padding that we human travellers are familiar with removed. This makes for a much noisier journey, and those ear tips are subjected in addition to the noise, to vibration and temperatures of between 5-10 C. The external air temperature is about -30 C, although the cabin itself is generally maintained at a temperature 21 C which is altered on demand.

Hearing Panel Asks U.S. Olympic Committee To Withdraw Its Decision Against USA Equestrian
Panel Seeks To Reopen Hearing On The Governance Of Equestrian Sports
USA Equestrian, the national governing body for equestrian sports in the United States, learned late last Friday that the United States Olympic Committee was asked earlier last week to revoke its recent decision adopting the Report and Recommendation of a USOC hearing panel, and to reopen the hearing on the current dispute over the governance of equestrian sports.
Last year, the United States Equestrian Team (USET) asked the USOC to decertify USA Equestrian as the national governing body for horse sports in the U.S. After a hearing last fall before a panel of five USOC board members, the panel recommended that unless USA Equestrian and USET agree to some new structure for governing the sport, the position of national governing body would be declared vacant. The Board of Directors adopted this Report and Recommendation as the official decision of the USOC on August 2, 2002. After repeated refusals by the USET to engage in negotiations, USA Equestrian formally asked that the dispute be resolved in a public hearing before the American Arbitration Association, as provided by federal law.

The Riding Tree: Communicating Through The Aids
WAVERLY, WVAids are physical pressures a rider uses to communicate with the horse. When the horse responds correctly to the pressure, the pressure goes away. So a correct response rewards the horse.
Think of individual aid pressures as “words” that have a specific meaning to the horsechange gait, go left, go right. As both horses and riders progress in their training, they begin combining several aids into “sentences” with greater nuances of meaning than a single wordget ready for an extended trot after we make this left turn, spin to the left when you come to the end of this slide.

Aids are not the same as cues. The horse responds to voice commands or to a click that means trot, or a bump that means canter is responding to conditioned cues. This is a different communication system and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. The problem is that riders communicating with their horses via cues are working with a very limited vocabulary. Riders communicating via the aids have a full, rich vocabulary with many shades of meaning. In order to take a horse to the upper levels in any sport, you need this larger vocabulary.

Canadian Children's Author Makes Final Mail Drop In Nevada
RENO, NV – Whooping and hollering, just like the Pony Express riders of 1860 would have done, Nikki Tate came racing into the playground of Reno’s Hunsberger school Friday to deliver the mail on the last stop of her trek across Nevada.
Digging into the mochila on her pony, Breezy’s back, Nikki delivered mail from students in her home province of British Columbia to students at Hunsberger, who had written letters for her to deliver on her return to Canada.
Over the past two weeks Nikki has talked to approximately 3,200 students at 18 schools across Nevada about the historical events that inspired her latest children’s novel, Jo’s Triumph (Orca Book Publishers). Starting out at Ely near the Utah border, she rode sections of the Pony Express trail mentioned in her book, re-living history and collecting stories that are sure to make their way into a sequel to Jo’s Triumph, a request of many of the students.
"I hope that by visiting the students I have managed to share some of my enthusiasm for both reading and writing," Nikki said. "If even one child discovers the magic of reading as a result of my trip, it will have been worth it".
