Eventing - Weston Park Horse Trials (UK) 8 - 12 October

Dressage clinches Clibborn victory for Ireland

With the action underway on the final day (today, Sunday) of the Weston Park Horse Trials, Ireland has already clinched the Junior section, won yesterday by Jonathan Clibborn with Spring Oscar.

Clibborn's commanding lead after the Dressage stage of the competition proved unassailable, as the Irish rider coasted to victory, finishing almost five penalties better than his nearest challenger, Great Britain's Simon Lucey.

Clibborn and Spring Oscar were easily able to afford the four penalties incurred in the Show Jumping finale yesterday (Saturday).

Although the minor placings changed hands after the Cross Country stage, and again after the Show Jumping, Clibborn's Dressage performance proved enough to comfortably hold the top spot throughout.

Sharon Reilly with Park Jesse put in a steady performance to finish in 9th overall, but the promising 6th place by Erin Tudhy on Ballyneety Lass after the Dressage came unstuck in the Cross Country section, ending their interest in the competition.

In the CC1* category, which was also completed yesterday, Armagh rider Sasha Harrison was best of the Irish with Mama Mia, finishing 6th overall. Five of the eight Irish contestants finished in the top 30 from the 76 international riders who completed all events. As well as Harrison's 6th, Cormac Reilly with Wood U Believe came 22nd, Lisa Dundee with Maddison climbed to 25th having been way down the order after the Dressage, June Burgess took 26th on Wee Preferido, and George Russell came 30th with Mr Magoo.

Today sees the completion of the final two competitions, the CC1** and the Under-21 divisions. Ciara Donnelly, on Sky Sport 11, looks set for a Top 10 finish, lying 6th going into today's Show Jumping stage of the Under-21s, while Simon Roche, on Kaiser Soze, was 12th overnight.

In the CC1**, best of the Irish before today's finale were Eric Smiley with Breeze (15th) and Patricia Donegan with Egon (20th).
