CHRISTOPHER NORTHCUTT

The Rocky Mountain Horse Expo 2001 committee dedicates this year's program to Christopher Northcutt, Colorado's own Special Olympian.

At last year's Rocky Mountain Horse Expo, Christopher, the kind and gentle soul he was, gracefully loaned the RMHE committee the use of his show horse, which was ridden all weekend by Ga Wa Ni Pony Boy giving demonstrations.

Sadly, when riding his tricycle in front of his family home this summer, Christopher was hit and killed. Following is a commentary written by Christopher's mother, Barbara Northcutt, for the Boulder County 4-H Senior Recognition Day held August 1st, 2000.

"Chris Northcutt rode with Myrna Folsom's Cinchbuster's 4-H club for his 9 years in 4-H. He rode Level 1 western equitation, pleasure and showmanship. Chris, like most of the kids, struggled with his record book, forgot his speech during his demo and came up with some interesting reasons on his judging. But, unlike most of the kids, he had a few extra challenges- he was born with Down's Syndrome, along with many other physical birth defects often associated with Down's.

When Chris was born the doctors said he would never walk or talk or even sit up. His dad told the doctors- "NO, someday he is going to ride," And he did. Chris also participated in the Special Olympic equestrian events. During the 1999 World Games, he brought home two gold medals for team USA Colorado. The Northcutt family would like to thank all the wonderful kids, parents and leaders of Boulder County for all the support and acceptance you have shown through the years. Thank you."

Christopher was truly a Special Equestrian that all of Colorado can be proud of and a huge loss to us all.
