Strongid™-P proves best wormer for large roundworms
A recent trial1 has shown that resistance to macrocyclic lactones such as ivermectin and moxidectin-based products is reducing their efficacy against large roundworms and that pyrantel-based Strongid-P has provided the most effective treatment.
The trial, involving 26 horses on a stud in the Netherlands, demonstrated continued evidence of large roundworm eggs despite regular treatments with ivermectin and moxidectin. However, the egg counts were markedly reduced with a subsequent treatment of Strongid-P.
The investigators concluded that the most likely reason for the failure of macrocyclic lactones to treat large roundworms was that the horses in the trial had developed resistance to these wormers. They had been on a predominantly ivermectin based treatment regime for the past 10 years and it was suggested that the overuse of macrocyclic lactones may have caused this resistance to develop.

A Horse of Course with Don Blazer
It was just one of those days. Or, in this case, nights.
Just over 227 years ago, Paul Revere rode into history.
Deacon Larkin loaned his chestnut Narragansett Pacer to Paul for the ride. Although he never knew her name, he described her as a "very good horse."
The Narragansett Pacer was unquestionably the most popular saddle horse in America at the time. Bred in Rhode Island in lush pastures bounded by the Atlantic and Narragansett Bay, the horses

A Horse of Course
were on the small size, had good dispositions, great endurance, good manners and an ambling gait. Their gait made them very pleasant to ride even though they did not always pace--move both legs on the same side at the same time.

Caspians To Be At Ragley Hall This Summer
The CASPIAN HORSE SOCIETY'S 2002 Annual Breed Show will take place this year on SUNDAY, 14th JULY in front of RAGLEY HALL, ALCESTER, WARWICKSHIRE, home of the Marquess and Marchioness of Hertford. Along with many others, last year's show fell victim to Foot and Mouth, so this will be the first opportunity for two years to see a gathering of these still rare Caspian horses.
As well as classes for Part-bred and Pure-bred Caspians both In-Hand and Ridden, there will be Open classes for Pleasure Driving (either Exercise Carts or more elegant vehicles will be welcome), Fancy Dress and Gymkhana. There will also be a Parade of Licensed Stallions and, new this year, a Parade of Pure-Breds and Part-Breds For Sale.
For those who wish to make a day of it, Ragley Hall and its extensive grounds are open to the public and there is plenty to see besides the Caspian Show. Class timings are approximate but should be helpful in planning a uniquely rewarding day.
