Chill Master Testimonial
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to congratulate you on your "Chill Master" range of boots from Equitector. I have found them to be extremely useful, but for a slightly unorthodox reason than horse care and riding! Please read on.
Since Summer 2002, I have been responsible for a friend's mare, and as she is kept at a DIY livery yard all the work - both mucky and otherwise, was done by myself. A friend recommended Equitector boots to me, and so shortly before Christmas I bought a pair of Chill Masters . However, before I could put them to their intended use, I was the victim of a serious road traffic accident, sustaining multiple injuries that included a scarred eye, two broken arms, and a broken left foot.
Once the plaster cast came off my leg, I found that I could not walk whilst wearing "normal" fashion shoes; some of them didn't even fit my foot anymore due to a bony lump left on my foot from the healing process. I tried my as-yet unused Chill Masters; not only did they fit perfectly, they gently supported my foot and helped greatly in my learning to walk again. Your "Easy Rider" technology actually helped my balance while I was slowly regaining my strength, and the supportive ankle padding in the boots was a bonus too.

United States Defends Title in Samsung Nations Cup Presented by CN At Winter Equestrian Festival
WELLINGTON, FLORIDA—March 7, 2003—The United States successfully defended its championship in dramatic fashion in the Samsung Nations Cup Presented by CN at the Winter Equestrian Festival.
The U.S. finished with a score of 8 faults to edge Ireland who finished the two rounds with 9. Canada finished third with 38 faults.
After Ireland’s Kevin Babington rode fault-free in Ireland’s final ride at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club, Sydney Olympic veteran Margie Engle of Wellington, FL entered the ring knowing that she needed a fault-free ride on Hidden Creek’s Jones to clinch the win. One rail down would give the win to the Irish and one time fault would force a jump-off.
“Yes, I felt the pressure,” the seven-time American Grandprix Association Rider of the Year said. “I could have been the bum of Wellington real quick.”
That did not turn out to be the case. Exhibiting the skill and nerve that have gained her more Grandprix wins than any rider in U.S. history, Engle guided her 12-year-old Dutch-bred to her second clean ride of the day to allow the U.S. to win Wellington’s Nations Cup for the second straight year.

New equine pregnancy test gives result in days
With spring just around the corner many horse owners will be waiting with anticipation for their mares to foal, after an 11-month gestation period.
However, it is the first few months after covering that are often the most anxious, as owners wait to find out if their horse is successfully in foal. It can be weeks before the results of blood tests are known, a procedure that can also be costly. But this suspense could become a thing of the past thanks to a new equine pregnancy testing kit from Promar Labs.
The new test is an easy to use kit which gives you an accurate result in just a couple of days. All you have to do is take a fresh sample of faeces from the mare, at least 160 days after covering, put it in the container supplied with the kit and post it to the lab in the envelope provided. You will receive the result within a few days.

Ground breaking animal charity initiative helps rebuild Afghan livelihoods
A major new project to help working equines and their owners in Afghanistan is to transform the lives of thousands of people struggling to rebuild their lives in this war-torn country.
This week, two international charities, the Brooke Hospital for Animals and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), launched a jointly funded project to provide free veterinary care for working horses and donkeys in the southern Afghan city of Jalalabad, as well as run an equine education and training programme for owners.
In Jalalabad, thousands of people work with horses and donkeys and, in the vast majority of cases, entire families depend on these animals for their livelihood.
Working at five of the busiest horse and donkey carriage stands, the project involves a team of specially trained local vets treating sick and injured animals, offering saddlery and farriery training and running education programmes.

A Light Hack for £250
A severely emaciated 15.2 hh dark brown gelding advertised for sale in the 'Free Ads' as a 'Light Hack' for £250 has found sanctuary thanks to a vigilant horse lover.
20 year old Danny Boy had been at a livery yard in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, last August when an ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) Field Officer and the RSPCA warned his young owner to take better care of him.

Not long after he was moved to another yard and was recently advertised for sale.
A prospective buyer, who responded to the ad, contacted the ILPH as soon as she saw the appalling condition he was in.
Comments Jacko Jackson, ILPH Field Officer, "Danny Boy's owner moved him after we had seen him last year so we lost track of him, but thanks to the person who responded to the ad and contacted us, we were able to visit once again."
With the help of the livery yard owner the young woman was persuaded to sign the horse over to the ILPH and he is now at Hall Farm, Snetterton.

Leading vets back Pfizer
Leading equine vets have pledged their support for Pfizer’s new educational worming policy which highlights the vital importance of rotation between the three chemical groups of wormers for routine worm control.
Pfizer Animal Health, manufacturer of the equine wormer Strongid-P, has become increasingly concerned about the apparent confusion amongst horse owners with regard to worm control. Emphasis on brand marketing means that owners are rotating between brands and not between chemical groups and resistance is becoming a serious issue.
An independent survey of horse owners, conducted at the Royal Windsor Horse Show last year, confirmed the current confusion about how to worm horses effectively. The results clearly demonstrate the continuing need to educate owners clearly and simply to ensure that they worm their horses in the most effective way possible.

Illegal Horse Transporters Targeted
The Vehicle Inspectorate has now impounded over 100 vehicles for operating without the correct licences.
Commenting on the 100th impounding at the end of last year, Bob Tatchell, VI's Operations Director said; "This is good news for road safety and legitimate operators. Impounding is an effective sanction against those who continue to flout the law. The Vehicle Inspectorate is aware of those who have simply not bothered to get a licence, and they will be specifically targeted."
Horsebox owners could also have their vehicles impounded by the Vehicle Inspectorate and then scrapped or sold - just for playing the good Samaritan after a fellow owner has broken down. It is illegal to accept any form of payment - even in kind - for transporting horses without an Operators Licence and the correct hire and reward insurance.

It's Not All John Wayne And Keep 'Em Rolling!
When most people think of Western horsemanship, images of John Wayne and the lonesome cowboy on the endless plain spring to mind. But according to Western horsemanship expert David Lloyd, nothing could be further from the truth. And in order to put us all right on the matter, he will be giving riding demonstrations at the Midlands Equine Fair taking place at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, on 8 and 9 March.
It is not about Hollywood stars in chaps, but rather schooling horses to move under weight transference and away from leg pressure. The result is an animal that is supple throughout its head, shoulders, ribs and hips and that can be ridden one handed - it will still perform correctly and work with its rider as an harmonious team.
The training of a Western horse is based on the combination of leg pressure and the rider moving his or her weight to put the horse in the correct position to carry out a manoeuvre. In effect, the rifer is allowing the horse to work out what is required for itself.
Soon the horse learns that it only meets resistance when it does something wrong and that the resistance stops when this is corrected. This is the basis of the Western riding philosophy, which is to make the right thing easy and the wrong thing difficult and to always reward the slightest attempt by the horse to act correctly.
In time and with patience the trainer will achieve a 'willingly guided' horse, and the rider will be rewarded with a horse that responds to the lightest rein contact and the smallest levels of control for any direction, speed or manoeuvre.

World-famous Grand Prix course designer, Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela, flew in to design a challenging 14-obstacle course. The ninth fence - the triple - proved to be the downfall for a number of riders. Only three riders posted clear rounds to advance to the jump-off.

Grantsmanship: Looking For Funding In All The Right Places .
You've seen the ads. You know, the ones that say, "Let the government finance your small business" or some other project or acquisition. They make it sound like the money is just growing on a tree somewhere, waiting for YOU to come along to pick it. In fact, millions of dollars are available in the form of grants. But what these ads don't tell you is that it is a highly competitive process (for example, $300,000 is available from one source; 60 proposals are received requesting a total of $1.3 million), that your goals and the grant maker's goals must be the same, and that there is a correct procedure and format for applying for a grant.
Understanding the grant system Primarily foundations, corporations, government, and civic and religious groups provide grants. This is money made available by these entities usually to solve a problem. By providing the funds, and opening the proposal application process to non-profits, these entities are effectively contracting with the non-profit as the means to the solution. The emphasis here is on the fact that the grant makers are looking to solve problems, not necessarily to make the non-profit successful. That may come as one by-product of the process, but it is not the focus. It's interesting to note that sometimes grant makers may be looking to help solve problems that they may have in some way created.
From the non-profits side, grant proposals are written for a variety of purposes. Obviously, the primary goal is to secure funding for an idea. Often proposals are written to make a case, test an idea, or get things started. It can be a method for non-profits to make grant making entities aware of problems that exist or that are emerging. Although an initial grant may not be funded, the awareness has been created, and subsequent requests may meet with greater success.

"Establishing a Proper Relationship with Equine": Part II: Understanding
By Rick Harper
TRUST : RESPECT : CONFIDENCE : COMMUNICATION : UNDERSTANDING
Understanding is the foundation for building proper relationships. If two individuals have no understanding of one another, every aspect of their relationship will be flawed. While man and animal can never completely understand each other, the more we learn about equine and the more we teach them about us, the stronger our partnership can become. This foundation is the cornerstone of Relationship Based Horsemanship. But what exactly do we mean by the word understanding? The dictionary definitions that apply to these concepts are as follows:
Understand: to be thoroughly familiar with; apprehend clearly the character, nature, or subtleties of
Understanding: a state of cooperative or mutually tolerant relation
To achieve an understanding of equine we must study, listen, and try to gain an insight into their thought processes and behaviors. We must also be willing to see each equine uniquely and throw out all of the pre-conceived notions, old adages, and misunderstandings that have been suggested and taught to us. Building a proper relationship with an individual animal requires an open mind and flexible thinking.

Laminitis Combat Pack
At this time of year, when the grass is starting to grow, all thoughts turn to laminitis and lush spring grass. Laminitis is caused by a digestive disturbance, which releases toxins, that in turn cause a reduction in blood supply to the foot and lead to inflammation and pain. In order to help with laminitis it is essential to support the liver, which is key to all digestive processes, to carry out its job of removing harmful substances from the blood.
Global Herbs have three products designed to help in the management of laminitic prone horses and ponies.
Laminitis Prone Supplement is a blend of 15 different herbs which helps the liver to work more effectively to mop up toxins and reduce acid levels in the blood. It also improves digestion of grass and other foodstuffs to prevent acids being created in too high levels. The liver is the chemical factory of the body and essential to well-being and general health. In the case of laminitis, this supplement ensures that any tendency towards acidosis in the bowels and body tissues is maintained within normal limits.
Horse owners have seen an improvement in their horse in as short a time as five days.

A Horse of Course

A Horse, Of Course
by Don Blazer
Greed and ignorance are making veterinarians, specifically the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) propose some pretty freedom limiting, and maybe health limiting rules and regulations.
The Revised Model Veterinary Practice Act (MVPA) also makes me think the rule "proposers" are suffering limited thinking due to their grossly oversized egos. Veterinarians are not the only good horsemen and women.
The recently proposed MVPA would put an end to holistic medical treatments for animals, affect your right to practice natural healing methods and limit treatments to traditional veterinary medicine.

Trallwm Farm Animal Sanctuary
It all started in Hampshire, when Lady Lesley Cooper, who was heavily involved with several Dog Rescue Centres, received a phone call asking if she would buy a rescue horse. After politely explaining that this encourages people to sell neglected horses instead of giving them to a charity, the same caller phoned several times with reduced price tags, until she said "Can you take him he will be shot otherwise".
The horse, Wilber, was very ill and the only man willing and able to help was Kevin Scott, a man used to moving top class bloodstock, but also devoted to the welfare of all horses. When he saw the dreadful state of this poor animal, he was whizzed across the Home Counties to us by Kevin. Although we had horses and were heavily involved in dog rescue, seeing this horse changed the whole course of things!
His feet were so overgrown that he needed emergency farrier work so he could stand up. Once his feet were sorted the next problem was that he needed condition and some muscle to support him, if you have an under sevens footballer in your home just check out the bony legs and that would be Wilber!
He had had the same rug on for many months so his skin was pretty grotty, his eyes were infected and sunken, and the sadness within was evident to any horse lover.Lesley continues....."Well, he survived, much to the amazement of local riders, and we ended up with a 15.1hh, pure white, pink skinned horse called Wilber that could hobble!

The British Horse Society 'Think before you dump your rubbish' says the British Horse Society
The unnecessary death of a beloved family pony earlier this month has highlighted the dangers of dumping rubbish in fields says the British Horse Society (BHS).
It is believed that four year old miniature Shetland pony Malcolm died after ingesting toxins from rubbish dumped in his field in Esher, Surrey. The results of a post mortem are awaited to confirm the exact cause of death.
For the past few years people have been dumping rubbish in the paddocks where Mrs Khor keeps her horses, ranging from garden waste to crockery and car batteries. Pleas to house owners backing onto the land have come to nothing, and local authorities have also been unwilling to act.
Malcolm's owner, Mrs Khor, is understandably devastated and believes that Malcolm's death has been caused by the rubbish.
