Record International Carriage Driving entries for Royal Windsor
Windsor is regarded by many as one of the finest international driving venues in the world and true to its reputation, the Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix, held at Royal Windsor Horse Show 14th-18th May 2003 has attracted a record number of entries.
A total of 78 competitors from 15 countries, including HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, who has himself won the event on two previous occasions, will be competing. Over half the confirmed entries are from foreign participants, with teams travelling from as far afield as Argentina reflecting just how highly regarded this event is. With 19 entries in the teams of Horses class this looks set to be one of the strongest competitions Royal Windsor has seen for several years.
Anyone keen to try their hand at driving will be presented with the opportunity to do so during lunch breaks on the Dressage days of Thursday 15th May and Friday 16th May. This exciting ‘teach-in’ will be hosted by Gary Docking and will also include a questions and answers session for those who would like to know more about the sport.

Newmarket To Stage Four £1M Race Meetings In 2003
The July Meeting, Cambridgeshire Meeting and Champions' Day will for the first time join the Sagitta Guineas Festival as million pound race meetings at Newmarket in 2003. These four top class meetings have the lion's share of a record £6,693,500 total prize money for the season at the home of racing, up by £846,000 or 14.5 per cent on last year.
Prize money at the July Meeting (Tuesday 8 to Thursday 10 July) has increased by £184,750 or 22% this year - in the last two years it has risen by 50% - and now stands at exactly £1m. Europe's premier sprint race, the Darley July Cup (G.1), enjoys the biggest increase, up £30,000 to £250,000.
The meeting has been boosted by the upgrading of the £70,000 TNT July Stakes from Group 3 to Group 2 status and the £40,000 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes from Listed to Group 3 status. As a result, the July Meeting now boasts one Group 1 race, four Group 2s and one Group 3.
‘To have all four of our big race meetings reach the £1m prize money mark is a great milestone to pass,’ commented Michael Prosser, Newmarket's Clerk of the Course. Prize money has risen this year on the vast majority of our 36 racedays and whilst a fair proportion of the increases are in line with the new minimum values, we have raised the value of many races above these levels.
‘Newmarket is synonymous with top class racing and it is our overriding aim to provide prize money levels at the home of racing commensurate with our status.’

Paints bear the colors for Six Flags Over Texas
Six Flags Over Texas 'Wild West' adventure turns spotlight on American Paint Horses

FORT WORTH, Texas-An 1890s outfit of brave Texas Rangers will saddle up again this year on American Paint Horses at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington during the Rangers and Outlaws Wild West show. The live-action adventure is sponsored by the American Paint Horse Association (APHA).
More than 2 million people will have the opportunity this summer to see colorful and highly talented American Paint Horses in action at the show, which will run June 14-Aug. 10 in the theme park's Texas Arena.
The 20-minute adventure, which continues for 58 straight days, brings to life a true story of how the Texas Rangers fought outlaws and brought justice to the silver-mining town of Shafter, Texas, in 1892. American Paint Horses are used exclusively in the Western adventure. To kick off each show, the Paint Horses will be used in a dramatic entry, during which they carry cowboys and cowgirls bearing the colors for Spain, France, Mexico, Texas, the Confederacy and the United States of America- the six flags that have flown over Texas.
The Paint Horses are used throughout the show, which includes gunfights, dramatic stunts, a daring escape from a blazing hotel, and even a giant water tower explosion and silver mine calamity at the finale. Ten actors specializing in horsemanship and stunts are involved in the show. They are led by Robert Keith, of Live Action Productions, who serves as the show's director and stunt coordinator.
As a special feature of the Rangers and Outlaws show, members of the audience are invited to leave their seats after the performance to talk with the actors and get a close-up view of the horses. This "meet and greet" event is popular, especially with the younger members in attendance. The actors, who have developed a close bond with the horses, field numerous questions, many of which center on the beautiful American Paint Horses.

Samsung Super League - It's On The Way...........

Get ready for the Samsung Super League Series – eight thrilling events, eight world-class teams but just one Samsung Super League title!
With just five weeks to go before the action begins at La Baule, France on May 11 the tension is already mounting.
It has been a tough battle to qualify for this Formula One of international team show jumping, with placings in the Samsung Nations Cup series between March and October and the results from the 2002 World Equestrian Games combining to decide the selection.

For the Swiss there was huge disappointment when, having finished ahead of the Irish at the end of last season’s Samsung series, they were edged out by Ireland’s better performance in Jerez. Switzerland might therefore be expected to campaign relentlessly on the Nations Cup circuit this year to ensure pole position at the end of the series which would guarantee promotion to Super League status in 2004.
The Irish on the other hand need to improve dramatically on their performances of last season which saw them only just squeeze into the final qualifying place, because the team which finishes at the bottom of the Super League leaderboard is automatically relegated to normal Nations Cup competition for the following year.
Great Britain, The Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium and Italy have all earned their Super League stripes along with those two power-houses of international show jumping – France and Germany. The French were in a class of their own at WEG 2002 while the Germans completely dominated last season’s Samsung series. Will a home win at La Baule give the French the early advantage in this first Samsung Super League season?

Rebecca Hart Named NDSA Athlete Of The Month For March
Kingston, RI—April 8, 2003—Rebecca Hart of Erie, PA, has been named National Disability Sports Alliance (NDSA) Athlete of the Month for March 2003.
Hart, whose legs have some paralysis due to spastic familia paraplegia, competes in the equestrian sport of Dressage which challenges horse and rider to strive for precision and harmony through a test of required patterns and movement.

You enter a little world with just you and the horse alone; and in that world you have the opportunity to have a personal conversation, demanding the best of each other from bell to bell. And best of all, it's really, really fun," she added.
The high school senior rode at the NDSA Dressage Judges’ Forum in Winter Garden, FL in March. She earned scores of 65.20 on the Championship test, and a 75.83 on the freestyle, which judges described as 'a medal winning' ride. She also impressed the judges as a good competitor, strong athlete and a good ambassador for the sport, especially for young riders.

The British Horse Society The British Horse Society advises members to exercise common sense over virus outbreak
The British Horse Society is advising its members to exercise common sense over the recent outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV1 & EHV-4) and is ready to offer help in the way of information to any horse owner during the current time of concern.
Defra has not imposed any equine movement restriction since the cases of neurological strain of the virus (EHV-1) have been confirmed, mainly in the Bromley Common area of Kent where at least seven horses have died as a result.
BHS Head of Welfare, Kerstin Alford, advises, "We fully appreciate horse owners' concern at this worrying time, and we want to help as much as we can. Our advice is to monitor your horse's health closely and take sensible precautions when hacking out or travelling, avoiding any areas where the virus has been confirmed. Should your horse be unfortunate enough to show signs of the virus try to keep him isolated and use disinfectant every time he is handled, both before and afterwards. If possible, whoever is handling an infected horse should not come into contact with other horses until the virus has abated.

Non-Profit Horse Rescue Farm Established in New Hampshire In Critical Need of Donations.
Chichester, NH (April 8, 2003) New Hampshire has a new; much needed animal shelter for horses. Live and Let Live Farm, in Chichester, NH, has just been granted 501(c)(3), non-profit, tax-exempt status and is in need of donations.
Live and Let Live Farm rescues abused, abandoned and retired horses from all over the state of New Hampshire. Founded in 1996, the Farm was incorporated in 2002, and made a non-profit in 2003. Starting with just four horses, Live and Let Live Farm currently has twenty-three horses, eleven of which have been placed there since last August.
"There is a need in New Hampshire to provide a safe environment for abused and abandoned animals to be rehabilitated, especially horses" commented Nancy Kyle, Chairperson of the Board of Directors. "Most animal shelters do not take large animals, nor do they rehabilitate or retrain animals, they just find homes for them. Not a week goes by that we don't get calls about horses or ponies needing homes."
Live and Let Live Farm, Inc provides horses and ponies either a temporary or permanent safe place to interact with people. They strive to rehabilitate and or retrain animals, leading to increased confidence and self-esteem, and relationships that benefit both animals and people. When applicable, the Farm tries to find appropriate homes for rehabilitated animals. Those animals that are considered un-adoptable are given lifetime care at the Farm.

Dressage In Florida 2003 Winter Season Wrap Up
WELLINGTON, FL (April 8, 2003) – From January through April, Florida hosted more than a dozen rated dressage shows, including four CDIs. Four dressage series, each hosting three shows, provided riders with a selection of competitions from Miami to Orlando: the Winter Equestrian Festival Dressage Show Series and the Gold Coast Dressage Association Series each presented three shows at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club in Wellington; the Palm Beach Dressage Derby Series at The Horse Park at Equestrian Estates in Loxahatchee offered three shows, as did the Orlando Dressage Series at Clarcona Horsemen’s Park near Orlando. Tropical Park in Miami hosted two show, and Gainesville and Venice each were the sites of three shows.
The most closely watched classes this year were qualifiers in the ‘small tour’ – the Prix St. Georges and Intermediaire I – as these are the classes that not only will determine which American riders will compete in the Selection Trial for the Pan Ams, but foreign riders also used the classes as qualifiers for their country’s team. Dressage in Florida 2003 showcased Pan Am hopefuls from the US as well as Canada, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Middle East. Florida’s winter shows also provided qualifying classes for the USET Grand Prix Championships, the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) Regional Championships, and the North American Young Riders Championships (NAYRC).

Phelps Wilkes & Associates, Inc. Hits Another Home Run
Wellington, Florida – April 8, 2003 – The numbers are in, and they did it again. Phelps Wilkes & Associates, Inc. increased the number of spectators attending this season’s seven-week Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington by 50%, as compared to attendance in 2002.
Phelps Wilkes, formed in January 2003 by legendary Olympic competitor Mason Phelps, Jr. and corporate securities attorney Beverly Lake Wilkes, has, in the last 6 months, transformed the rarified air of the Wellington horse show world from a destination for the seasoned equestrian enthusiast to what is now a destination for one and all.
The duo, whose goal is to turn equestrian events into a true spectator sport (much like baseball, football, etc.), is well on its way. Horse showing is the #2 spectator sport in Europe, behind soccer, and is a major spectator sport in Canada. Here in the U. S., the sport is way, way down the list. But Phelps Wilkes is changing that.
Mason and Beverly have collaborated for over 8 years in volunteer work, chairing events for numerous charitable causes. The duo is best known for raising over $1 million for The United States Equestrian Team through their famous Denim & Diamonds Galas.
The spectator transformation began with The 119th National Horse Show, held during Thanksgiving week 2002. A mere three weeks before the show was to begin, The National Horse Show, Inc. and Stadium Jumping, Inc. hired Mason and Beverly to promote the event. After years of running in the red with declining crowds, the powers that be decided to move The 119th National Horse Show to The Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club in Wellington. This move was historic, because for 118 years The National had been held in the New York City area and in an indoor venue. The naysayers came out in droves. But they were proven wrong.

Minister launches draft passport legislation at National Equine Forum
Rural Affairs Minister Alun Michael chose last week’s prestigious National Equine Forum, attended by HRH The Princess Royal, to launch the draft legislation on the requirement for equine passports.
Speaking at the Forum on ‘a government overview of the horse industry’, Mr Michael summarised the draft legislation, which in line with the European Commission Decision 2000/68/EC, requires all equines in the UK to have a passport by 31 December 2003. He emphasised that there would be a three-month consultation period until 30th June, during which key equestrian organisations were invited to submit comments, before the document was finalised. Some sections of the draft gave a number of the 150 Forum attendees cause for concern. Noted as particularly worrying were the system of equine identification proposed which was seen to have shortfalls and also the compulsory and permanent passport declaration on whether or not horses were destined for entry into the food chain, which gave no flexibility for amendment should the horse enter new ownership.
A highlight of the Forum was a perceptive presentation on the need to recruit, retain and recognise the worth of world-class grooms, from former international dressage groom, Lucy Katan. Lucy, who is now employed by The Blue Cross animal welfare charity, sparked an animated and supportive debate among the audience with her forthright recommendation that grooms should be treated as vital support staff within the World Class programme and with the respect and conditions they deserve.

The British Horse Society British Horse Society Access Week Highlights Safe Off-Road Riding With Celebration Ride
The annual BHS Access Week takes place from Saturday 17 May to Bank Holiday Monday 26 May and this year features several organised off-road rides and a road safety training session. The highlight of events will be the 'Access Week Celebration Ride' celebrating the opening of the 42-mile long Mary Towneley Loop, part of the Pennine Bridleway. The ride will take three days, starting from Sunday 18 May until Tuesday 20 May, and all riders are welcome to take part whether it be for one day or for the whole route.
Currently, Access Week awards are being prepared for over ten Good Guys and newly created routes. Good Guy Awards acknowledge dedication and determination shown by individuals or organisations in maintaining or improving existing rights of way, while Route Creation Awards publicise new routes now available. Each award will be made during a short ceremony, organised locally.
With a growing interest in equestrian tourism the need for more off-road riding routes is increasing, and the BHS Access Week provides the opportunity to publicise the availability of existing routes. It also acknowledges the hard work put in by many BHS and affiliated bridleway group volunteers as well as private and public landowners to provide those routes.
The BHS launched its Ride-UK initiative in 2000, aiming to set up a nationwide network of bridlepaths and many new routes are now being opened as a result, including the Sabrina Way and Claude Duval Way last year; the Mary Towneley Loop is the latest addition with the completed Pennine Bridleway anticipated for 2004. Riders wanting to take their horses on holiday can purchase the BHS publication, Bed and Breakfast for Horses from the BHS Bookshop (price £6.95 plus p&p) providing over 300 places to stay and ride.

Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) Paralytic Disease
At present there are no official restrictions imposed by DEFRA as a result of the reported cases of EHV paralytic disease and there are no restrictions on the movement of horses.
The BEF's Director of Sports Science and Medicine, John McEwen, advises individuals, yards and show organisers to continue their normal activities but to take sensible precautions regarding infected yards or yards in close proximity to an outbreak.

Isolation of infected yards is essential but fortunately the virus does not travel long distances through the air and infection is mainly by contact with infected horses.
It is wise to be vigilant in monitoring horse health to detect early cases of disease.

Royal Windsor Alters Programme
The Committee of the Royal Windsor Horse Show (14th-18th May), the opening show of the summer season, has decided that with the current uncertain climate surrounding events in the Gulf, it is inappropriate to continue with the celebratory military elements at this year’s show. However the vast and exciting array of competitions and equestrian displays will continue as normal.
As a result the Committee has withdrawn the Musical Drive of The King’s Troop, RHA as well as the daily staging of the ‘Wings for Victory’ extravaganza. The display was to have celebrated the enormous efforts made by the Windsor region in 1943 to raise money for desperately needed fighter planes for World War II. Directed by Sir Michael Parker, ‘Wings for Victory’ was to have included a celebration of the horse’s vital role in World War II as well as land and air contributions from the RAF.
The two displays were major elements of the two planned evening performances (17th and 18th) and as the Committee was keen to maintain the high standard of entertainment that the public has come to expect, both performances have been cancelled. As a consequence the fireworks finale on the Sunday evening will not be staged. The schedule of activities during the daily performances on Saturday and Sunday has been extended to incorporate the remaining elements of the evening performances, making for a daytime show that is more packed than ever.

Establishing a Proper Relationship with Equines:Part III: Communication
TRUST : RESPECT : CONFIDENCE : COMMUNICATION : UNDERSTANDING
Our ability to communicate verbally is both a blessing and a curse. Try as we will, we can not always be honest with our words. If you doubt this, try asking ten people that are not close to you how they are doing. The probability is that you will not receive many honest responses. People that are plagued with health, family, or financial problems will generally answer "great" or "fine, how are you?" If you were an equine, you would know the emotional state of another being without asking.
One theory about the ability of an equine to read moods describes this phenomenon as a "sixth sense." Some even suggest that this is because animals have psychic abilities. The fact that equine usually know our emotional state as soon as we step into their world is more likely due to their ability to read our non-verbal communication. Our posture, movement, actions, and tone of voice project our inner thoughts and feelings. Due to our reliance on verbal communication, people generally ignore the non-verbal. Equine, on the other hand, must rely on non-verbal ommunication for survival and are more skilled at reading body language and tone of voice than we are. A person who is out of sorts can enter an area where equine and people are interacting, and the entire atmosphere can change, becoming more negative.Conversely, a person skilled at the art of horsemanship can be present and the interaction will become more positive. This is why a skilled clinician can seem almost mystical. The truth is that these skills can be taught to anyone who has the desire to learn. Unfortunately, too often skilled clinicians teach their techniques, ignoring the intangible skills that enable the techniques to besuccessful.
Years ago, a young protégé wanted to learn how I trained horses. This person could watch my movements and techniques and seemingly was able to imitate them to a tee. Interestingly, although it appeared to be a duplication of my methods, the horse's response was quite different. After several weeks, the young man confessed that he didn't even really like horses. The horses that he tried to work with knew this from his non-verbal communication during the training sessions. They did not give him respect or trust, even though to the human eye it appeared that there was no
difference in our training technique. Also the young man was focusing on imitating my techniques, giving little attention to the horse's communication. So what does this have to do with communicating with equine? Everything. We must first realize that communication is a two-way street. If we only communicate our expectations to an animal and ignore what the animal is trying to communicate to us we will have little success.

SCOPE Awarded Inward Buyer Programme by Irish Horse Board
SCOPE Auction, Ireland’s first and only “elite” auction of young showjumping, eventing, and dressage prospects, has been awarded the prestigious Inward Buyer Programme by the Irish Horse Board. The Inward Buyer Programme reimburses the cost of plane or ferry tickets to travellers from outside of Ireland who purchase a horse at the SCOPE Auction.
SCOPE Auction, which is dedicated to offering buyers the “very best of the best” young horses in Ireland, is unique because:
-- Every horse has been chosen by a selection committee of three Olympians, representing the disciplines of showjumping (Col. Ned Campion of Ireland), eventing (Gillian Rolton of Australia), and dressage (Jennie Loriston-Clarke of Great Britain), and led by Holland's top stallion expert (Jaap Werners, chairman of the KWPN’s stallion inspection committee);
-- Every horse is evaluated for bloodlines, conformation, type, athleticism, movement, potential for excellence in sport, and potential for excellence in breeding. Only the "very best of the best" are selected;
-- Every horse has passed an independent veterinary exam on the day of the inspection;
-- Every yearling and 2-year-old has x-rays evaluated by one of Europe's leading radiographic experts (Dr. Hans Schougaard of Denmark), using the same criteria he uses for the Danish Warmblood Society and Hanoverian Verband stallion inspection committees;
-- Every horse has a note stating if the breeder has conformed to the SCOPE Breeder's Code, which is based on state-of-the-art, scientifically-validated feeding and management practices designed to reduce the risk of developmental bone disorders;
-- Every buyer from outside of Ireland -- whether as close as Great Britain or as far as North America or Australia -- can have his or her airfare or ferry costs reimbursed by the Irish Horse Board's Inward Buyer Programme.

HITS Opts For Perfection By Postponing The Premiere Of Its Saugerties Horse Shoe Facility
SAUGERTIES, NY (April 4, 2003)—Horse Shows In The Sun (HITS), producer of five hunter/jumper horse show circuits nationwide, announced today that the projected completion of its world-class horse show facility in Saugerties, New York, will be extended to May of 2004. The much anticipated premiere of the facility was originally scheduled for early summer 2003, however, a number of uncontrollable factors have resulted in the postponement. The severe winter weather and record snowfall experienced by the Northeast region was perhaps the deciding factor in the delay of the construction project.
The postponed completion of the new site is a definite disappointment to HITS. The announcement of the new horse show facility captured the interest of those equestrians from California to Florida who participated at HITS winter horse show circuits. The Saugerties community and commercial businesses have also shown their support and their positive feedback was instrumental in the approval of the project.

A Horse of Course

A Horse, Of Course
by Don Blazer
If you love that new foal, don’t feed him--too much!
Y
es, I know he’s cute, and you can’t resist. Yes, I know you want him to have the very best. Yes, I know his little ribs are showing just a bit.
That’s the way he is supposed to be!
Feed him too much, make him fat, and he may be a cripple for life.
Epiphysitis—an inflammation of the epiphyseal plate--is caused by a number of factors, excessive weight being first on the list.
The disease occurs in foals ranging in age from one to nine months, and we usually associate it with the knee and fetlock joint although it can occur on any bone. On each end of the shaft of long bone is the epiphysis (epiphyseal plate) which is cartilage which hasn’t yet turned to bone.
This cartilage or soft bone maintains its natural shape as the young horse grows, unless it is “squashed” out of shape by the foal’s own weight. When it is “squashed,” it is often called “big ankles”, “double ankles”, or “hour-glass ankles or knee.” The distinctive hour-glass shape is the result of the epiphyseal plate flattening under the horse’s weight and widening above and below the joint.
Sometimes—but not often—there is no lameness associated with the condition. However, if not recognized and left uncorrected, epiphysitis can and often does result in crippling arthritis.
