Funnell One Win Away From Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing
LEXINGTON, KY—May 15, 2003—Pippa Funnell of Great Britain has completed a historic second step that has her in an unprecedented position to possibly become the first winner of the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing.
Following back-to-back wins in the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event and the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, Funnell has positioned herself to win a $250,000 bonus if she can win the CCI Four Star at the Burghley Masterfoods event in England in September.
Funnell, the two-time defending European champion who helped Great Britain win team Silver Medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and at last year’s World Equestrian Games, won the Rolex Kentucky Four Star in late April on Primmore’s Pride and the Badminton Four Star in England in early May on Supreme Rock. Since the start of the Rolex Grand Slam in 1998, she is the first rider to win two consecutive events to earn a shot at the bonus that goes to any rider who wins three Rolex Grand Slam Events in a row

SAMSUNG SUPER LEAGUE : FRANCE OPEN THE SCORE
The French, already in the driving seat after the first leg of the Samsung Super League at La Baule last Sunday, look strong favourites to make it two-in-a-row when they line out in the second competition of the series in Rome next Friday, May 23.
Brimming with confidence after their convincing opening victory, they are also returning to the Piazza di Siena as reigning champions following their success at the 70th anniversary Nations Cup show there last year. Edouard Couperie, Bruno Broucqsault, Christian Hermon and Michel Robert will be flying the flag on this occasion but they can expect powerful opposition from the Germans who are lurking in second place, only three points off the leaders at this stage. Helena Weinberg, Franke Sloothaak, Marcus Ehning and Andreas Ripke will be under orders to snatch the maximum 10 points and reverse the placings at the top of the table if they can.

Samsung Super League
The French, already in the driving seat after the first leg of the Samsung Super League at La Baule last Sunday, look strong favourites to make it two-in-a-row when they line out in the second competition of the series in Rome next Friday, May 23.
Brimming with confidence after their convincing opening victory, they are also returning to the Piazza di Siena as reigning champions following their success at the 70th anniversary Nations Cup show there last year and, despite the fact that they are fielding a totally different team this time out, they still look menacing.

The British put up a stalwart performance to finish third last weekend and Nick Skelton, now back in flying form following an excellent recovery from the neck injury which very nearly finished his career, will be joined by Tim Stockdale, Keith Shore and Di Lampard in attempting to consolidate their position.
American-based Kevin Babington, competing in Europe for the first time this season as he prepares for the defence of the European team title later in the summer, is the most experienced of the Irish squad which also includes Conor Swail who has been campaigning very successfully on the Italian circuit.
The Irish share fourth position at present with Sweden who send out Maria Gretzer, Rolf-Goran Bengtsson, Maria Sundberg and Henrik Ankarcrona but with just 3.5 points each, both countries will be hoping to improve their respective positions as will the Dutch whose squad includes the Schroder brothers, Wim and Gerco.
With just one point on the score-board the Belgians are trailing badly so Jos Lansink, Dirk Demeersman, Peter Postelmans and Ludo Philippaerts will be trying to put that to rights, but the real pressure is on the home side which was awarded only 0.5 points when finishing at the bottom of the pile last Sunday.

It's that time of year again, flying pests are coming out and the summer battle begins!
Spraying poisons all over your horse (and yourself) may offer some relief from flies and midges but how effective is it really and what are the long term costs to health and the environment?
Truly natural products are hard to come by, as often as not those that scream 'natural' on the bottle on closer inspection turn out to be mostly chemicals with one natural ingredient. And then there is the problem that what works on one horse doesn¹t for the other. So what is the solution? The most effective bug control is that which is custom made for each individual's unique bio-chemistry and you can easily learn how to do that yourself with 100% natural ingredients and in less time than it takes to scour the tack shop shelves.

FEI Eventing World Cup News
William Fox-Pitt (GBR), riding the 17-year old gelding Stunning, won the eighth leg of the FEI Eventing World Cup held at the Chatsworth International Horse Trials (GBR) on 11 and 12 May. In doing so, he ended the winning run of his team mate Pippa Funnell who, coming fresh from her four-star wins at Kentucky and Badminton, placed second on Walk on Star. Fox-Pitt and Funnell, who had performed the qualifier's best Dressage test, tied for first position after the Cross Country, but Funnell had a Jumping rail down and one time penalty while Fox-Pitt jumped clear the rain-soaked course.

Fox-Pitt, number one of the 2002 FEI World Eventing Rankings, is with 30 points in the lead of the World Cup series along with Philip Dutton (GBR), Andrew Nicholson (NZL), Jean Teulere (FRA), Gina Miles (USA), Andreas Dibowski (GER), Gustavo Mourao (BRA) and Pia Pantsu (FIN). Chatsworth is his second World Cup qualifier following the inaugural event at Gatcombe Park (GBR) in August 2002 where he took the third position with Moon Man and the fourth with Stunning, who has retired from Three Day Eventing to contest CICs only.
"The FEI World Cup is an exciting concept for riders and something we have looked forward to happening for a long time," said Fox-Pitt. "Everyone will want to ride their best horse in the final because it will be a prestigious competition with a good prize fund. Chatsworth was a terrific weekend and showed the sport at its best."

Best Crowd For Three Years At Newmarket Racecourses
For the first time ever, the Sagitta Guineas Festival has seen crowds of over 40,000.
There was an attendance of 18,037 at Newmarket on the Saturday, an increase of 8.5% on last year's figure of 16,615. And a crowd of 17,089 adults, plus many children, saw another record for a Sunday at Newmarket, and a huge increase on last year's 14,594.
Lisa Hancock, Newmarket's Managing Director, said: ‘It's been the best Guineas crowd for three years and the racecourse improvements have worked extremely well with such a good crowd. We saw a great winner in RefuseTo Bend on Saturday, who is going on to Epsom, which is just what a Guineas winner should do. It has been a fantastic weekend at the Home of Racing with the attendance up 17% on last year. To have passed 40,000 for the meeting is tremendous.’

Greater security for your dog with secure radio fence
A new ultra secure radio fence for dogs is now available in the UK utilising precise FM rather than AM signals.
Safelink Digital FM design Dogwatch fences are buried around the perimeter of the garden and give a gentle shock to dogs if they try and escape over the invisible fence.
Previous models on the market used AM radio signals but in many instances these can become susceptible to interference from other radio sources making the fence useless and your dog receive shocks when it is nowhere near the edge of the zone. That can leave the dog free to run out onto busy roads with inevitable consequences or bother neighbours and passing children.
Safelink Digital FM design Dogwatch fences are now being marketed and installed across the UK by Dogfence (see www.dogfence.co.uk). They have been endorsed by vets and as a humane and effective way of preventing a dog straying from a back garden - no matter what its size.
They comprise a wire buried in the ground around the perimeter of whatever space is being defined as the boundary for the dog. This transmits a weak FM signal to a receiver on the dog's collar. If it moves into close proximity to the wire the receiver first issues an audible warning to the animal. If it continues to move closer to the perimeter then two probes issue a mild deterrent shock of no more than 3.6 volts.
Dogs learn very quickly to associate the audible warning with an area they should not be in and soon are completely at home wearing the Safelink receiver collar.

United States Riders With Disabilities to Compete at 2003 I.P.E.C. Dressage World Championships
Kingston, RI—May 12, 2003—The United States will send a team to compete in the fifth International Paralympic Equestrian Committee (I.P.E.C.) Dressage World Championships, September 2-7, 2003 in Moorseles, Belgium.
More than 125 riders with a disability from 35 countries are expected to compete at the four-day Championships. Participants will compete in Individual Championship tests and Musical Freestyles as well as a Team test. Competitions will be open to riders at all four recognized Grades of physical disability.
For the first time in the history of the I.P.E.C., riders will be competing on “own horses,” those that are leased or borrowed by the teams and individuals competing. There will not be a draw for horses to be provided by the competition, as was previously done at the 1996 and 2000 Paralympic Games and all past World Championships. This change will dramatically increase the level and quality of international competition for riders with disabilities.

Garden State Horse Show Celebrates Biggest Year Yet
AUGUSTA, NJ—May 12, 2003— The 52nd edition of the Garden State Horse Show, held April 30-May 4, celebrated a record 1151 entries during its five days at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, NJ. The impressive turnout was also reflected in the $50,000 Garden State Grand Prix, presented by Junior Essex Troop, held on Saturday, May 3. Thirty entries vied for the prize money with some of the nation’s best show-jumping riders and horses competing.
Topping the class was Chris Kappler of Flemington, NJ, who won the Grand Prix riding Profox. The pair was the final team to tackle the jump-off course and they posted a winning time of 32.043 seconds. Profox was one of ten horses to jump clean over the Anthony D’Ambrosio-designed first-round course. Kappler also piloted two others in the second round – Rafiki and Korina.
The battle for the blue came down to Kappler and McLain Ward of Brewster, NY. Ward rode Galant and Onyx 66 in the jump-off, and it was Galant who put the heat on Kappler as he posted a time of 32.523 seconds and jumped into the lead just moments before Kappler returned as the last to go.
“The kid’s lethal,” said Kappler referring to Ward’s speed and accuracy. Kappler knew he needed to cut time and ride a faster track than he did on Korina. Sitting in the second and third position he had “nothing to lose.”

Samsung Super League
Vive La France!!!

It was French flair all the way as the host nation claimed an emphatic victory at the thrilling first leg of the Samsung Super League in La Baule today.
Taking the lead with just four faults after round 1, the French added nothing more to their score and their final rider, Gilles Bertran de Balanda did not have to jump a second time as they stormed to victory on their home soil.
It was a tense and nervous opening competition, with riders very much aware that a good performance was vital if their country is to stay within the top-eight show jumping nations in the world.
The Samsung Super League has captured the imagination and commitment of riders, Chefs d’Equipe and National Federations alike and it is now a matter of pride as each nation strives to maintain their Super League status but, at the end of the series in September, one team will drop out as the winner from the normal Samsung Nations Cup series is promoted.
Rome hosts the next leg of the Samsung Super League in just two weeks time and the Italians will want to show considerably better form on their home turf. Perhaps however they can take some encouragement from Jean Maurice Bonneau’s final comment yesterday – "I BELIEVE in this competition – the top teams in the world are competing against each other but it’s a case of going step-by-step – each competition provides a new opportunity to show what you can do" he said. Italy will be hoping to shake off today’s experience when the teams all next line out in the Piazza di Siena on May 23rd.

Carey Breaks Bogey - Wins Riverdance Grand Prix
THE ARMY EQUITATION SCHOOL's Lt. Shane Carey was triumphant after winning today's (Sunday) Riverdance Grand Prix at Sutton, Co. Dublin, for his previous two outings in the Kerrygold Grand Prix League have been spoiled by a single fence down in the last round.
Today, however, the Army rider steered the 1990 bay gelding <Lismakin> into First, with no mistakes and well over a second faster than runner-up Clem McMahon, riding <Hermes de Reve>.
The Super League Grand Prix was suspended for a short while today as torrential rain lashed the course, but nothing could spoil the look of delight on the winner's face as he took the trophy.
<<I've had two Sixth places in the previous two Kerrygold outings, both caused by a single fence down in the second round, >> said Lt. Carey, <<but we were very careful today, and I knew it was only a matter of time before Lismakin showed his true colours. I am really pleased with the result.>>

Ireland Fourth In Super League Nations Cup At La Baul
e
IN THE FIRST of the much-heralded 2003 Samsung Nations Cup Super League competitions at La Baule, France today (Saturday), the Irish team of Cian O'Connor, Robert Splaine, Billy Twomey and Peter Charles took equal Fourth Place with Sweden.
After a spectacular three days of jumping at La Baule in the lead-up to the Nations Cup, which resulted in the show's Leading International Rider Award being made to 23 yr-old Cian O'Connor, the Irish team were in second place to France at the half-way mark, with Germany lying Third. A clear round by veteran rider Robert Splaine helped Ireland finish the first half with a total of just eight faults, and although the Corkman repeated the medicine in the second round, his team-mates were unable to match his precision, and Ireland finished on a total of 20 faults, in equal Fourth position with Sweden, also on 20 faults.

Samsung Super League
They're Under Starters Orders...........

Great Britain got the best starting position for the opening leg of the Samsung Super League series when the draw was made in La Baule tonight (Friday 9 May).
The British were drawn last of the eight competing teams and, on this occasion, it was the Germans who were out of luck as they will be first into the arena at 2pm next Sunday.

The order of go is as follows:
Germany : Holland : Sweden : Italy : Ireland : Belgium : France : Great Britain.
German Chef d’Equipe, Sonke Sonksen, was philosophical about the fact that his team will run first. "We are not lucky, but if the teams are in the same order for the prize-giving on Sunday we will be happy then!" he said.
Mr Sonksen recalled that it was seven years ago when Ludger Beerbaum and Alexandra Ledermann launched the original Samsung Nations Cup series at La Baule and said that it seems quite appropriate that the new Super League is also to begin at the same venue.
So the lights are on, the stage is set and it is "all systems go" for the first leg of the series which promises a season of world-class sport – eight super competitions, eight super teams but only one Super League title-holder….it all begins on the French coastline this Sunday….

Show Jumping - O'Connor Takes Second In La Baule Derby
THE IRISH KEPT up their unrelenting pressure at La Baule, today (Saturday) in advance of tomorrow's Nations Cup Superleague clash. Kildare's Cian O'Connor once again delivered a strong message about Irish confidence at the French venue with a convincing Second Place in the La Baule Derby on <Irish Independent Casper>. Coming so quickly after Billy Twomey's decisive Grand Prix win last night at La Baule, and a clutch of Irish Firsts and Top Five places over the last few days, the seven opposing nations lined up for tomorrow's major competition must surely be feeling less and less certain of an easy victory.
