OLYMPIC GAMES QUALIFICATION NOW CLOSED

The Individual qualification process through the FEI Olympic Riders Rankings of 2 May 2004 is now complete. The list of qualified nations is available from the FEI website and will be officially published in the FEI Bulletin.

FEI GANDINI WORLD RIDERS RANKINGS
ONLY 10 POINTS SEPARATE BEERBAUM AND HIS RUNNER-UP EHNING

With 2655 points, Ludger Beerbaum (GER) is leading the FEI Gandini World Riders Rankings with as few as 10 points more on his fellow countryman Marcus Ehning. Beerbaum dropped 305 points at the end of the month, only earning 90 at FEI World Cup qualifier at Göteborg.

Marcus Ehning (2645 pts) had a fruitful month of April: he collected 100 pts at the World Cup Final in Milan, where he finished 2nd in the first competition and 12th in the Final, 115 pts in Göteborg where he finished also 2nd in the Friday’s qualifying competition and another 80 pts in Düsseldorf where he won the Grand Prix.

The Swiss Marcus Fuchs maintained his 3rd position. With his 3rd place at the FEI World Cup Final in Milan where he won the first competition and his good results in Göteborg, Marcus Fuchs is back to top form.

Beezie Madden-Patton (USA) went up two places to grab the 4th rank, thanks to her excellent results in Charlotte and Tampa (USA) where she finished 2nd of the Grand Prix. The best lady rider is even becoming a threat for the Top 3, as they will all drop a number of points at the end of the month (330 for Fuchs, 305 for Beerbaum and 235 for Ehning) whereas she has none to drop from May 2003.

Good progression also from Robert Smith (GBR) who went up from 17th to 14th place. He earned 200 points during the month at CSI 4* Shefield and in Göteborg. The World Cup Champion Bruno Broucqusault (FRA) progressed from 42nd to 24th place in two months.

2004 SAMSUNG SUPER LEAGUE SEASON TO START IN BRAND NEW STADIUM IN LA BAULE (FRA)

There will be no less than 123 riders, 300 horses, 18 nations and five continents in La Baule celebrating the new François André stadium and demonstrating the global reach of equestrian sport at the highest level.

The five continents will be represented by 67 riders from 15 nations in Jumping, and 56
riders from eight nations in Endurance for the CEIO 3*.

The inauguration of the renovated François André stadium will take place on Thursday, 6 May. The best riders in the world have confirmed their participation including the leader of the FEI Gandini World Riders Rankings Ludger Beerbaum.

La Baule’s website www.labaule-cheval.com in association with Jumping Vidéo and Paris Web Cube, will give web surfers equipped with an ADSL (high speed) connection the opportunity to follow live all the competitions of the event including the Derby, Grand Prix and Samsung Super League*. This service will cost 15 Euros for live, or 18 Euros delayed, per competition).

* For rights reasons, the Samsung Super League will only be available live to visitors having an IP address in France, and on 15 may to IP outside of France.


FEI BCM WORLD DRESSAGE RIDERS RANKINGS
Ulla Salzgeber still in the lead, World Cup Champion Anky Van Grunsven back to Top 3

With a total of score of 79.762, Ulla Salzgeber (GER) is leading the FEI BCM World Dressage Riders Rankings including events starting from 1 May 2003 to 30 April 2004. She is followed by American rider Debbie McDonald with 77.852.

The 2004 World Cup Champion Anky Van Grunsven is back to the top and has progressed from 6th to 3rd place. With 9 year old Gestion Salinero, Anky had achieved a spectacular score of 83.45% in the Freestyle to Music (Kür) of the FEI World Cup Final early April.

Heike Kemmer is now 4th with 76.919. She scored 78.65% in the Düsseldorf Final to finish 4th.

DRESSAGE FORUM IN SAO PAULO (BRA)

The 1st Latin American Dressage Forum will be organised on 22 and 23 May 2004 in Sao Paulo (BRA).

The Forum will include the following themes:
-Basic principles and philosophy, new rules, judging by Mariette Whitages, FEI Dressage Committee Chairman
- Training and training programmes for children, by Jean Bemelmans, trainer
- Development: the achievements and plans for the future, by Jacqueline Braissant, FEI Development Project Manager

FEI EVENTING RIDERS WORLD RANKINGS
Kimberly Severson in the lead

Kimberly Severson (USA) is leading the FEI Eventing Riders World Rankings with 294 points thanks to her victory in Rolex Kentucky CCI 4* in Lexington. She also earned points in CCI 3* in Atlanta, where she placed 2nd, 4th and 6th.

The winner of this year’s Badminton CCI 4* William Fox-Pitt (GBR) is second with 279 points, followed by Srah Cutteridge (GBR) who achieved a 8th and 10th place in Badminton as well as a 12th place in Lexington.

Equal 4th are David O’Connor (USA) and Lourenco Vieira da Silva (BRA) with 149 points.

136 riders obtained points for the FEI Eventing Riders World Rankings from 1st January 2004 until today.

“MISSION TO ATHENS” FEATURING PIPPA FUNNELL

Pippa Funnell, Britain's champion eventer is one of the eight athletes that Eurosport follows in the weekly programme "Mission to Athens" (M2A) as they prepare to achieve their goals of competing in the Athens Olympic Games.

Pippa Funnell has been involved with horses all her life and is a major name in Eventing since her teens after winning the individual European title in 1987. She is the first rider to win the Eventing's Grand Slam after winning the Kentucky, Badminton and Burghley Horse Trials last year.

Each week a journalist follows Pippa during practice, taking care of her horses and competing. Recently we watched Pippa winning at "Fontainebleau" event and last week-end followed her at Badminton Horse Trials.

NEWS FROM SLOVAKIA
First CDI to be organised in Topolcianky.

On 1 May, Slovakia, together with 9 other European countries joined the European Union and on 5-6 June the first CDI*will take place in Slovakia. The host of this event is the National stud farm in Topolcianky.

In its recently renovated historical premises, the traditional breed of Lipizzaner, Arabian, Hucul and sports warmblood horses will certainly find convenient competition conditions, with its brand new footing and box stables. Thanks to the support of the FEI Development fund, the event will be judged by an international jury.

The organisers from the Topolcianky stud and the Slovak Equestrian Federation would like to warmly invite all competitors interested in this new but attractive event.

UNITED EQUESTRIAN ATHLETES ASSOCIATION

On 20 April 2004, the new umbrella organisation of the riders in the three Olympic disciplines of Jumping, Dressage and Eventing was formally announced at the FEI General Assembly (see FEI Press News 11/04).

The board of the Association is composed of the following members:

The association is aimed at promoting exchanges between their rider members as well as discussing subjects of common interest among the Olympic disciplines. The ultimate goal of the association is to have one rider on the IOC Athletes Commission.

IN MEMORIAM

Adolf Ehrnrooth (FIN), who rode for Finland in the Three-Day Event of the 1948 Olympic Games, died recently aged 99. Please accept our apologies for the spelling mistake in FEI Press News 12/04.

Jean Zlatiev (FRA), eminent member of the Judicial Committee since 1996, passed away last 28 April 2004.
