Tahoe Seniors Day, Sunday, July 22, at HITS Tahoe Horse Show Kicks Off with 5K Run/Fun Walk and a Horse Shoe Tournament

SAUGERTIES, NY (June 15, 2001)--Horse Shows In The Sun has announced that HITS Tahoe, the new four-week hunter/jumper horse show circuit in Minden, Nevada, is introducing a new event for spectators this year--Seniors Day Presented by Douglas County Senior Services. On Sunday, July 22, from 10am to 1pm, seniors will be admitted free to the show grounds and free bus service to and from the event will be supplied by the Douglas County Seniors Center. Event organizer Warren Bottino of the Douglas County Senior Services is working with the Douglas County Library staff and HITS to present a grand finale to the final day of the circuit starting with a 5K Run and Fun Walk and a Horse Shoe Tournament, and concluding with the $100,000 Rio Vista Grand Prix.

Seniors Day will feature a "Turn of the Century" theme. Staff members from the county working at Seniors Day will be dressed in "Music Man" style outfits including straw hats, white shirts, and armbands. Seniors attending the event are also invited to dress in 1900s style costumes, and prizes will be awarded for the best dressed. A full acre of the 100-acre HITS Tahoe horse show grounds will be set up for entertainment and educational displays including library materials, health fair exhibits, horse-and-buggy rides, and barber shop quartets.

Prior to the Seniors Day festivities, all ages are invited to participate in the HITS Tahoe Seniors Day Fun Walk and 5K Run from 8am to 9am-a benefit for the Northern Nevada Home School Cross Country Team. Participants will start and finish at the HITS Tahoe horse show grounds. Coldwell Banker ITILDO will supply free bottled water. Prizes will be awarded in all age divisions from youngsters to seniors, and everyone will receive a HITS Tahoe 5K Run and Fun Walk T-shirt and a root beer float at the finish line. Right after the race, the Horse Shoe Tournament starts at 9am.

Following the Seniors Day festivities, everyone is invited to stay for the biggest purse competition of the horse show circuit, the $100,000 Rio Vista Grand Prix starting at 1pm. HITS management expects an international roster of approximately 30 riders to compete. Winners of the 5K Run and Fun Walk, the Costume Contest, and the Horse Shoe Tournament will have the opportunity to be a part of the awards ceremonies with the winner of the $100,000 Rio Vista Grand Prix.

HITS Tahoe is a four-week hunter/jumper horse show circuit that will be held for the second consecutive year in Minden, Nevada, 12 miles from Lake Tahoe. The horse show features approximately 300 competition classes each week from June 27 through July 22. More than $800,000 in total prize money will be awarded. The show grounds are open Wednesday through Sunday from 8:00am until 3:00pm. Competition is featured in six rings. On-site parking is free. No charge for admission Wednesday through Saturday, adults are $5 on Sunday--proceeds benefit local charities.
