CURATOR COMMENTS_________________
"Elevating the Senses" exhibit 2002 Boston, MA.
Connecticut artist Mary Femniak relies on the natural world for the ideas that shape her work. Femniak's multidimensional functional works reflect this trend with great sensibility, as she successfully combines complex patterns of nature with simple graphic forms, bold colors and a variety of textures.

Femniak was a graphic artist in the printing field for the past 20 years and now works out of the New Traditions Studio in Simsbury, Connecticut. She thrives on her direct connection to nature and experimenting with materials like yellow ware to create "simple, colorful and useful art".

ARTIST STATEMENT:______________________
As a graphic artist I worked closely with regional and national clients to develop a print style that would enable them to stand out from their competition. Developing special effects in the pre-press stage allowed my clients to be visually impactful while keeping print costs low. Although this creative process was exciting-it was also limiting.

I took the color and visual skills I learned in the print field and used them to express myself with a "dimensional" style. Inspiration for the horse bowls are from my years as a rider, trainer and competitor with the wonderful horses that shared my life. I enjoy using different media and materials combined with bright colors and especially enjoy that the yellow ware bowls are useful as well as artful.

New Mexico and New England are my favorite places to work and enjoy the natural beauty that inspires the heart and hand. Each work is a prayer that the eye may recognize the unlimited beauty of all things.
