Orphan Foal is Lucky to
Survive
Tiny three day old Geronimo the little orphan foal
with the big name is lucky to be alive. He survived two days alone in his field
before help came after his mother got into serious difficulties when giving
birth to him. |

ILPH (International League for the Protection of
Horses) Head Groom, Chrissie Foley said, "When I arrived he was tottering
around amongst the trees and his mother was down, unable to get up and in
severe pain. Unfortunately we had to put her to sleep but I managed to extract
some of her milk and the foal, Geronimo as we have called him, took to it
straight away."

Show Jumping - Ireland Fail To Add To Nations Cup Tally

Champions today (Friday) failed to add to their 2001 tally of three Nations Cup
wins, when they finished fourth in the prestigious Aga Khan Trophy competition
on their home turf at the Kerrygold Dublin Horse Show.

Show Jumping Gets Underway At NAYRC
USA Equestrian (formerly AHSA)
announced today that the first competitions toward the individual medals in
both the show jumping Championship division and the Junior-Young Rider (JY)
division at the 2001 FEI North American Young Riders' Championships sponsored
by State Line Tack began on Thursday, August 9, 2001. The Championships run
through August 12th at Tempel Farm, Wadsworth, IL.
Thirty-five riders in the Championship division contested the challenging track
set by Guillherme Nogueira Jorge of Brazil. Many riders had trouble with the
combination set late in the course requiring riders to ride past the in-gate.
The location, combined with the airy nature of the jumps caused a number of
stops and several unplanned dismounts. Most show jumping riders in the United
States are unfamiliar with FEI rules, and the riders who fell off did not
realize they could remount and continue as is allowed in an FEI Championship.

The Zane Schulte Trainer of the Year
Award has been established in honor of Zane Schulte’s memory.
After our precious son made his transition to a heavenly life in June of 2000,
Tom and Barbra Schulte decided to honor his memory by creating an annual award
for professional trainers in the cutting industry. The spirit of the award is
to honor a trainer who serves the industry through leadership, integrity,
service or any combination thereof. It is a humanitarian award. It is not about
arena earnings and the trainer does not have to be a high profile one, although
he or she might be.

NFU Supports Fund-Raising Pig Brother Site
The NFU has praised a web-site which
imitates the popular Big Brother television programme and is set to raise
thousands of pounds for the Supporting Farmers in Crisis fund.
The interactive web-site* Pig Brother is the brainwave of Somerset Organics,
and will raise funds when viewers vote out the pigs either online or by ringing
a special telephone number. Alternatively, bets can be placed with William Hill
the bookmaker.

Bowmore Blair Castle Horse Trials Attract Record Entries
Once again the Bowmore Blair Castle
International Horse Trials have attracted record entries. A top class field of
200 riders from all over the world will compete in both classes of the three
day event which takes place at Blair Castle from August 23rd to
26th.
Over 260 entries were received but, as director
and organiser, Tim Hadaway explained, "It is impossible to run more than
100 in each class, especially on speed and endurance day on Saturday, when each
horse takes nearly one-and-a-half hours to complete the four phases. It was
therefore necessary to ballot out about 60 entries in the one star class to
leave 105 running there and 95 in the two star, which did not require a
ballot."
No fewer than three members of the British Olympic
team from Sydney, Jeanette Brakewell, Ian Stark and Leslie Law have entered,
while Rodney Powell who also travelled to Australia has Falcon Ebony in the two
star class.

This interesting weekend will begin with looking
at how aromatherapy has developed to give the participant an understanding of
the foundation behind the application of essential oils with horses. It is
presented by Internationally acclaimed Equine Therapist, Catherine Bird.
Essential oils can have an effect on the body on
many levels. We will discuss how the scent molecule can trigger a cascade of
reactions throughout the entire body within nanoseconds of the stimuli reaching
the hypothalamus gland. This can help address behavioural problems or issues
developed from past experience. The physical body may be addressed with
applications that assist the essential oil constituents to access the body via
the bloodstream where eventually they are excreted from the body in a safe and
effective manner.
The role aromatherapy has to play with the life of
the horse is varied and there are certain situations where aromatherapy will
enhance the environment and others where competition rules may restrict the use
of essential oils. The participant will be made aware of the wonders and the
limitations of this therapy in a sensible, commonsense approach.

Larling as a birthday treat little did she think that the family would shortly
return as competition winners. "It's the first time we have visited the
centreº, says Jade, "I loved seeing all the rescued horses and ponies
- it was really cool !" |

was called Zena, suggested Warrior for a colt (boy) and Princess for a filly
(girl) foal (after the tv programme Xena, Warrior Princess) and it was good
enough for them to win !

Perthshire’s very own superstar,
Ewan McGregor, is to visit the Bowmore Blair Castle International Horse Trials
and Country Fair, which runs from Thursday, August 23rd to Sunday August 26th,
2001.
Ewan, who stars in Star Wars II and Trainspotting
will be attending the horse trials on one of the days, in spite of his very
busy filming schedule. His presence is sure to swell the number of people
visiting the event and will be a great chance for local people to meet one of

Show Jumping Competition Begins At NAYRC
USA Equestrian (formerly AHSA)
announced today that the show jumping competition is underway at the 2001 North
American Young Rider Championships at Tempel Farms in Wadsworth, IL, August
7-12th . Yesterday consisted of the stable inspection, horse inspection and
jog. Today all the riders are participating in a warm up round designed to
familiarize the horses and riders with the ring, the jumps, and the general
setting. Although record heat is making everyone sticky and sweaty, everyone
seems to be bearing up, and hopeful that the promises of a break in the weather
will come true.

Equestrian Sport Marketing And Development "Town
Meeting" Scheduled
USA Equestrian (formerly AHSA)
announced today that an innovative, open "Town Meeting" with the
sport's leadership will be held on Monday, August 20, 2001 at 1 p.m. (ET) to
brainstorm marketing and development ideas.
The nationwide conference call and webcast will be open to all members of USA
Equestrian, and the public, to discuss the new directions of the sport's
national federation, and to solicit ideas and input for better marketing and
fund-raising. A toll-free 800 number will be available to accredited leaders
and media who apply to participate because of their special interest and/or
expertise. Others can monitor the conference by webcast at www.ahsa.org and
submit suggestions and ideas by email, both during and after the meeting. An

Red Rose Carriage Club Shows its
Generosity
During a recent visit to Penny Farm the new ILPH
(International League for the Protection of Horses) Recovery and Rehabilitation
Centre, near Blackpool, members of the Red Rose Carriage Club left more behind

Again--It's Three for Five in the $15,000 Open Jumper Prix at HITS
Catskills |
ELLENVILLE, NY (August 3, 2001)-Marilyn Little has
won three of the five $15,000 Open Jumper Prix classes held at HITS Catskills
in Ellenville, New York. Little, of Fredenick, Maryland, won the HITS Catskills
Week V Mini Prix today aboard Pico de Gallo, out-jumping a field of 36 horses.
There were no double-clears, and Little won as the fastest of three
four-faulters in a six-horse Jump-Off. "I'm shocked actually," said
Little, a 19-year old college student. "Anyone who was in the Jump-Off was
in good company. You had three Olympians and two other major international
riders. I was definitely the only amateur."

Hidden Creek's Perin Win $100,000 Nevele Grande Grand Prix at HITS Catskills

ELLENVILLE, NY (August 5, 2001)-U.S. Sydney
Olympic Team Member Margie Engle and her Olympic mount Hidden Creek's Perin won
the $100,000 Nevele Grande Grand Prix at HITS Catskills V in Ellenville, New
York, today, besting a field of 36 that included three of her team mates and
their Olympic mounts-Nona Garson and Rhythmical, Lauren Hough and Clasiko, and
team alternate Todd Minikus and Oh Star. Engle, 43, of Wellington, Florida, and
Hidden Creek's Perin also went up against another Olympic pair in the
four-horse Jump-Off, U.S. Atlanta Team Silver Medallist Anne Kursinski and her
Olympic mount Eros. Engle posted the only double-clear of the class.
"Perin has so much scope and a really big heart," said Engle. "A
lot of horses got backed off at the Olympics, but he got better and better.
Like today-I could tell the heat was getting to him but he just digs down. He
was really running and trying really hard. I can't say enough good things about
him. He does it easily and he's a sweet, sweet horse around the barn and
everywhere else. He's just fantastic." Hidden Creek's Perin is a
10-year-old Westphalian gelding owned by Hidden Creek Farm.

Aromatherapy for animals - Learn how
to use essential oils to help your horse. |
Aromatic plants and oils have
been used as an aid to health and well-being for thousands of years. More
recently they have been developed for use in animals and have helped a wide
range of conditions such as skin problems, allergies, training problems, stress
and trauma. Each essential oil has an individual combination of constituents
that interact with the body's chemistry in a direct manner, which in, turn can
affect the bodily systems and stimulate the body to heal.
So how are they used in animals?

In a natural environment animals use their sense
of smell to choose plants that will help them. This instinct is an important
element of this system as the animal is invited to participate in its own
healing by choosing which oils it would like. A short list of oils is selected
based on a detailed history of the animal and an analysis of its character and
habits. Each oil is then offered individually to the animal to smell. If the
animal needs the oil it will either smell it intently for a few minutes or show
signs of wanting to lick the oil bottle, or indicate in some way that topical
application is required. Once the oils have been selected they are diluted in a
base of vegetable or infused herb oil and applied as the animal has indicated.
