The World Equestrian Games In Jerez Spain
September 10-22, 2002
By Diana De Rosa
Antonio Ortiz, the General Manager of the World Equestrian Games, which will be taking place in Jerez, Spain, September 10-22, 2002, and César Garcia de Quebedo, the Communications Manager, have been involved with the Games since its inception.
They and the others from Jerez are hoping that this will be the start of more events to be held at these venues. For them this is the beginning to the future of horse sports in Spain, not a culmination once WEG is over.

I went to Jerez, Spain to see the venues and to visit with Antonio, César and others on the WEG staff. Antonio explained his reasons why the Games are being held in Spain and his ultimate goals. "We have a good feeling about these Games. I feel the facilities will be ready in a month or less. We sold a lot of tickets already, which for us is important because horse sports in Spain are not popular."
But the Games have given new enthusiasm to horse sports and many festivities will take place while the Games are in Jerez. In fact, "The whole town will be involved," explained Ortiz
Antonio went on to explain how a lotto was organized just for these Games and netted $10 million. They've secured five large sponsors (Rolex, Volvo, Banesto, Telefonica and Osborne) and five small sponsors (Marca, Hola, Ave, Telefonica, and the Government of Dubai for endurance) to help with the difference of $23 million that they feel the Games will ultimately cost them, which does not include the building of the venues, which the local municipality is paying for. Ticket sales and a trade fair will make up the difference. (There will be no tickets for endurance - that will be free to everyone.)
Antonio also explained that the goal is "to try and do a World Championship like it is in other sports. In many places it is way down and we would like to put the equestrian sport at the same level as other sports. Finally, I would like to create a total equestrian family all in one location. It will be good for the FEI, for the Games, for Jerez and for our sponsors." To Antonio, that was what these Games were all about.

Equus - The Horse Event Expanding
"Equus provides a really good start to the season. The venue is great, easy to reach by public transport and motorway and a great place to meet our members"
Pat Gaywood of the British Horse Society reflects on the benefits of Equus, a view shared by both exhibitors and visitors.
This year's event saw the consolidation of this new addition to the equestrian calendar attracting over 20,000 visitors during the four days. The displays by Tim Stockdale, Blyth Tait, Kelly Marks and many others proved to be an irresistible combination yet again. 93% of visitors enjoyed it so much they said they would come back next year.
Equus will be held at ExCel in London on 3rd-6th April 2003. Plans for next year will ensure the extensive variety and high quality standard of displays will continue with three separate sessions with adequate gaps allowing for extended shopping time. Seats can be booked for the individual sessions, a system tat was pioneered this year and will be further structured next year.

Horse Training Simplified
"Horse training is very simple - it's very black and white," says downunder's guru of horsemanship Clinton Anderson. What a relief to know shades of grey don't always cloud the horizon!
See Anderson's horse training methods firsthand when he comes to Can-Am's All Breed's Equine Emporium at London's Western Fair Raceway, in March, 2003.
Born and raised in Australia, Anderson now operates Wahl Equestrian Center in Sterling, Illinois with his wife Beth. He conducts clinics there, and films numerous technique videos as well as a weekly hour-long television show. Untrained horses are used in the show, broadcast on Dish Network and Direct TV, to solve common behaviour problems and training issues faced by horse owners of all disciplines.
While growing up in Australia, Anderson's family noticed his natural ability with horses and fuelled that interest with his first horse at age 9. Anderson started a full time training apprenticeship at age 15 with acclaimed clinician and horse trainer, Gordon McKinlay of Rock Hampton, Queensland. During the next two years, Anderson started and trained over 600 horses under McKinlay's expert guidance. Anderson also trained with Australia's Ian Francis and U.S.'s Al Dunning, eventually using his knowledge and expertise to start his own training facility. With only 1 point separating the top three winning horses, Anderson placed third at the Australian National Reining Futurity in 1997. In October of that year, Anderson moved permanently to the U.S. where he began touring, training and conducting clinics.
The philosophy behind Anderson's training methods is basic. "Horse training is like a scale," he explains. "Where do we want to be with our horse training? We want to be in the middle - somewhere between being a wimp and getting dragged all over the place, and being too rough and aggressive with our horse, always forcing him to do things for us."

By Diana De Rosa
From Tiny Tots to Veterans and from Miniature Horses to Dog Agility Demonstrations Opening Day at the Hampton Classic is a Day Not To Be Missed!
Take a well-known mortgage company whose founder and owner loves horses and rides, add that to a famous horse show which showcases tomorrow's champions side-by-side with Olympic veterans, spice it up with some Dog Agility Demonstrations, add a dash of kids activities such as pony rides and a petting zoo and you've got the perfect recipe for The Manhattan Mortgage Company's presentation of Opening Day at the Hampton Classic Horse Show on Sunday, August 25.
The 27th annual Hampton Classic Horse Show, which this year takes place from August 25 through September 1 in Bridgehampton, NY, will draw over 1500 equestrian competitors from across the country and some 60,000 spectators. As a kick-off to this weeklong event, The Manhattan Mortgage Company sponsors Opening Day, which is when the local horsemen come and compete on the same turf that later in the week will showcase Olympic veterans and up-and-coming equestrians. American Hunter Jumper Foundation Assists Horsemen In Need Through Emergency Relief Fund
August 13, 2002, WEST BOYLSTON, Massachusetts -- Since its establishment in 1995, the American Hunter Jumper Foundation (AHJF) Emergency Relief Fund has become one of the most important and visible programs of the foundation. Through this program the AHJF has assisted dozens of horsepeople in a wide variety of situations. The Fund relies on donations for the financial support it gives to individuals and families involved in the industry. The AHJF Board reviews emergency situations which are brought to their attention, and approves distributions according to the Fund's guidelines and the particular needs of the recipient.
Jack Miller, a well-known farrier who had no health insurance, first received financial assistance from the AHJF Emergency Relief Fund in the fall of 2001 after suffering a heart attack. However, the angioplasty procedure that was performed on Jack at that time only gave him relief for a short time. By February of 2002 he was back in the hospital having a quadruple by-pass! The Emergency Relief Fund has again stepped up to the plate to help Jack get back on his feet. Oliver Kennedy, co-manager of the Capital Challenge Horse Show, explains that while Jack, who was recently inducted into the Farrier's Hall of Fame, "will never be able to shoe the huge number of horses he did before his health problems, but he can still make a living at it."

Lexington, KY August 14, 2002 Eclipse Press announces publication of Old Friends Visits With My Favorite Thoroughbreds.
Barbara D. Livingston’s Old Friends combines her photos and essays to share her passion for aging Thoroughbreds, horses that once commanded center stage but often become almost invisible with time, except to those who love them. Sunday Silence battles what appear to be his longest odds yet.
Report From Japan: On-the-Scene Account of Sunday Silence's Battle, Reported by: Barbara J. Bayer, The Blood-Horse Magazine; BloodHorse.com
HAYAKITA, HOKKAIDO, JAPAN (August 13) -- It's the ninth anniversary of the death of Zenya Yoshida, the founder of Shadai Farm. Rain has fallen for most of the day, growing stronger toward evening and the mood is grim at Shadai Stallion Station. In a barn set back from the others, a barn that was especially built to accommodate the aging Northern Taste, Sunday Silence battles what appear to be his longest odds yet.

Laminitis in the stallion's left foreleg has worsened and Sunday (as the Stallion Station staff members refer to Sunday Silence) has for the past two days remained standing. Apparently the pain has worsened in both forelegs, in the left from the laminitis and in the right from the original infection for which he was operated on three times. ''He has drawn his weight back over his hindquarters like a horse about to jump and has his feet drawn somewhat together in order to take the weight off them," said spokesman Eisuke Tokutake. "Before he would lie down a lot but now he's staying standing. If he lies down I don't think he's going to get up again. Then again, maybe he will. He's such a strong horse.''

Top Riders For Bowmore Blair Castle Horse Trials
Riders from as far afield as New Zealand and South Africa are descending on Blair Castle next week to take part in the Bowmore Blair Castle International Horse Trials from Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th August.
This is the 14th year of what Ian Stark once described as "The best three-day event in the world," and each year a number of new competitors find their way to Highland Perthshire to ride in this most popular, friendly but challenging event.
Last year’s winner, and one of Britain’s furthest travelled riders is Lucy Wiegersma from Penzance in Cornwall. She has Friday Morning in the two star and will be hoping for better luck with Friday Feeling in the one star section this year, as in 2001 she failed to complete after leading the dressage stage.
New Zealand’s Caroline Powell has a horse in each section as does Swedish rider, Linda Algotsson, who is competing at Blair for the first time. Veteran Irish rider, Eric Smiley will be one of the favourites for the two star with Breeze, with top riders from south of the border such as Terry Boon and Darrell Scaife hot on his heels.
Local girl, Louisa Milne Home from Kinross was a member of the victorious Scottish team last year and will be hoping for individual honours next weekend. She has both Melody River and Stronacroibh running in the one star class.
Kirsty Hynd and Suzanne Lumgair, both hail from Angus and have successfully completed Blair in the past. Kirsty has Welton Maximillion in the one star while also in that class is Suzanne with her new ride, Roman Lord.
Overall there are 123 competitors in the one star and 68 starters in the two star. Riders from both sections will have dressage on either Thursday or Friday, before the challenge of speed and endurance on Saturday which involves four phases including roads and tracks, cross country and a steeplechase. Sunday sees the exciting climax of the three-day event, when riders showjump in reverse order of merit.

Magnifico's Return To Paradise
Magnifico's story is as interesting as any. A complex Arabian who ran for his life at the track and won, he had lost his way with humans. What had taken place will never be known or admitted. I ache for what he must have endured, because when he came to me in the late winter of '96, he had no use for me or anyone for that matter.
After winning several flat track races the summer of '95, he was purchased and sent to Turf Paradise in Arizona for the winter racing. He broke the track record in his first race by a serious margin and decidedly won the next race as well. But that was the end of it. In the third and forth races, by the time he'd entered the gate he'd already run his race, he was completely drenched in sweat and stressed out. He had nothing left. In the racing world it's called 'washing out.'
This was a horse that fit his name perfectly. I've not laid eyes on a better-proportioned animal in my life. He was a dark bay of 15-1 with strong bone and the muscle to cover it. His thick jet-black mane and tail glistened against his muscle structure that was on a par with a well-toned stallion. Magnifico was a no nonsense horse; all business when working, yet something of a character when not. He had a busy mind that needed to be constantly challenged with a high degree of creatively. His gaits were to be envied. His speed, awesome. But none of that mattered when he arrived via transport late one warm spring afternoon.

Taggart Star To Visit Horse Trials
Don’t panic if you see DCI Steven Jardine on the August bank holiday weekend when you are visiting the Bowmore Blair Castle International Horse Trials and Country Fair at Blair Atholl! No-one has been murdered and no-one is being investigated. "Taggart" actor, James McPherson will be enjoying his day out like everyone else and helping to support the Children’s Hospice Association of Scotland (CHAS) at the same time.
This is the 14th year of the prestigious Bowmore Blair Castle event and the second year that it has adopted CHAS as its official charity. The four day show takes place in the magnificent grounds of Blair Castle from Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th of August and features many of the worlds top riders.
It also includes one of the best Country Fairs in Scotland on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August, however, James McPherson is planning to come on Friday, when "The Festival of the Horse" takes place. This includes demonstrations of many different breeds and types of horses including the spectacular little Icelandic horses.

Mary Lisa Leffler Captures Final $35,000 Grand Prix, Sponsored by Equinox Resorts, At the Vermont Summer Festival Horse Show
East Dorset, VT—August 11, 2002— Mary Lisa Leffler won the final $35,000 Grand Prix, Sponsored by Equinox Resort and Spa, as the Vermont Summer Celebration, the final week of competition at Harold Beebe Farm in East Dorset, VT, brought the 2002 Vermont Summer Festival to a close.
Concluding five weeks of international show jumping competition, Leffler went out in fine style. The only rider to go double clear in the Grand Prix, Leffler, 35, and Graf Rossini S claimed victory on the final day of competition at the Vermont Summer Festival for the second year in a row.
“Having my family here to support me is really great!” said Leffler, who lives on a 200-acre family farm in Brookeville, MD, about the best part of the win. “I have 47 horses here between my own and all my clients, so I am really thankful to the people working at the show for helping me keep everything so organized. I couldn’t do it without them!”
Leffler had her game face on when she was the third rider to return to the ring in the jump-off. After knowing the first two riders each suffered four faults, Leffler’s strategy was to go slow and steady. Her plan proved successful as she left all the jumps up in a time of 42.51 seconds with the 13-year-old Oldenburg stallion, Graf Rossini S, earning $10,500 in prize money for owner Bruce Chovnick LLC.

The Training Tree: Relaxation
WAVERLY, WV--As the horse progresses in his training, you begin “layering” new things on top of what the horse always knows. If you have a problem, you go back to where the horse last accepted everything and start over from there.
Rhythm is at the bottom of the training tree because doing everything in a consistent, predictable way gets the horse’s attention and builds trust in the horse. When you’re doing things rhythmically and you are never quick or abrupt or “startling” to the horse, then the horse will relax. Now you can start to work with his mind.
You know whether the horse trusts you or not by watching his body language. His breathing will tell you if he’s relaxed or not. The position of his ears and his eyes will tell you where his attention is. The set of his tail and the degree of tension in his facial muscles, his neck muscles and his back muscles are other clues to his state of mind. In the beginning, you need some mechanical guidelines for judging whether a horse is relaxed. Remember, thought, that part of what any horse presents to you is just his personality, separate from the specific body language he’s giving you about how he feels at the moment. Eventually you just want to develop a feel for whether the particular horse is relaxed or not. Then anytime you lose it, you just go back to doing something in a rhythmic way until the horse puts his attention back on you and relaxes again.

O'Connor's Puissance Victory Equals All-Time Record
Twenty-two yr old Irish rider Cian O'Connor lived up to his promise at today's (Saturday) Kerrygold Horse Show in Dublin with a breathtaking win in the Puissance competition, equalling the all-time RDS height record of 2m25 (7'5").
Having signalled his determination to please the home crowd with the only Irish clear round in the Aga Khan Trophy competition on Friday, the young Kildare rider rode <Irish Independent Casper> clear in the fifth round to equal the record set in 1998, and beat a crack international field of eight other riders.
O'Connor was one of three left in the fifth round jump-off, but both Britain's Tim Stockdale on the Puissance veteran <Fresh Direct Wiston Bridget> and France's Christian Hermon on <Fucson de Granlieu> toppled the coping of the giant wall. O'Connor and his ten year-old grey gelding were last to jump, and cleared the wall with apparent ease, picking up prize money of Eur 6,250. The Kerrygold appearance was <Irish Independent Casper's> first ever Puissance competition. Please click here for further details
