ILPH Sponsored Ride Raises Money for Rescued Horses
Wet, miserable weather didn't deter 85 riders who took part in a sponsored ride on Sunday, September 23rd through West Harling Wood, near Thetford.
£1,450 was raised for the ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) by valiant riders who braved the weather, the majority of whom opted for the 15 mile ride, although shorter distances were available
Top fundraisers were Sue and Vic Newlove of Mildenhall who raised £150 and received horse accessories, a bottle of wine and a year's free ILPH membership for
their efforts.

ILPH Horse Welfare Charity Appoints New Campaigns Manager
The new Campaigns Manager for the UK's leading international horse welfare charity, has now been appointed and will be starting her duties at the end of the month.
Jo White, presently working at Plumpton College in East Sussex, is due to take up the reins of her new job at the ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) on Wednesday, 24 October.
Says Jo, "I am really looking forward to taking up the challenges of my new role at the ILPH, as it has been a long-term ambition to become involved with the valuable welfare work that the ILPH do."

NHJC National Finals at the Capital Challenge Horse Show
Friday - October 5, 2001
The NHJC National Finals continue at the Capital Challenge Horse Show this week in Upper Marlboro, MD. With the conclusion of the amateur divisions, the Junior and Pony riders took up the reins today. The NHJC National Finals awards have been well received, and many people are showing increased interest in the National Hunter/Jumper Council.
The NHJC represents hunter/jumper issues to USA Equestrian and its Board of Directors. The NHJC is very active in rule changes affecting the hunter/jumper sport, and works with a variety of committees to clarify existing rules and develop new ones to better the sport.

NHJC National Finals at the Capital Challenge Horse Show
Thursday - October 4, 2001
Amateurs reigned at the Capital Challenge Horse Show today, and the National Hunter/Jumper Council presented four National Finals titles today.
Rick Oas of Zone 10 was thrilled with his NHJC win in the Amateur Owner Hunters 18-35 with his eight year old Holsteiner/ Thoroughbred cross, Wait ‘n See. Oas was especially thrilled with his win since he started the mare four years ago. "She was thin and unbroke, and then she just bloomed." Oas was hoping to do the Indoor shows this fall, and qualifying as the Zone 10 representative cemented the decision. "I had ridden in the East as a junior and I always wanted to come back. This is so much fun getting to compete against the best horses in the nation." Oas and his wife, Buffy, operate their own Pollyrich Farm, work together and show together. "We understand and respect one another," explained Oas "and we show as a team."

BETA EU Directive threatens sales of horse wormers
PROPOSED changes in Brussels to legislation controlling the sale of animal medicine could prevent horse owners being able to buy horse wormers over the counter from qualified and registered retailers in the future.
These far-reaching plans which could radically change the way horse wormers and other animal medicines are sold, have come under strong criticism from the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA).
The new proposal on veterinary pharmaceutical sales by the EU Commission could make all medicines for food-producing species (including horses) prescription only (POM).
The plans which are firmly opposed by BETA as well as other UK animal health trade bodies, could drastically alter the way horse owners buy their wormers.

5th Oct. 2001 Irish Eventers Set Sail For European Championships
Today (Thursday, October 4), the senior Irish Eventing squad of Carol Gee, Trish Donegan, Sasha Harrison and Ann Hatton left Ireland for the Senior European Eventing Championships at Pau, France, where they will compete between the dates of October 11 -14.
The Senior Eventers will be hoping to repeat the success of Ireland's show jumping squad of Peter Charles, Jessica Kurten, Kevin Babington and Dermott Lennon, who, at Arnhem in the Netherlands in June of this year, took the Senior European Team Championships for the first time.

BEF leads new initiative to highlight ‘Best of British’
SEIB to sponsor scheme to identify leading bloodlines
The British Equestrian Federation today announced a new initiative aimed at improving the quality of sports horses in this country as well as identifying prospective performance horses needed to provide leading British riders with horses capable of winning international medals.
The South Essex Insurance Brokers BEF Young Horse Evaluation Series will involve holding assessments for four-year-olds horses, registered with a recognised British breed society, at six qualifying shows around the country in Spring 2002.
The priority in this new series of events, which is aimed at finding horses for all major competitive disciplines, has been given to identifying the best young horses in the country, as well as the bloodlines from which they come.

Culpeper Erika Christie and No Doubt Win $5,000 Marshall & Sterling Pony Jumper Final at Commonwealth Park in Culpeper, VA
CULPEPER, VA (September 29)-Erika Christie, 15, of Warwick, New York, riding No Doubt won the $5,000 Marshall & Sterling Pony Jumper Final at Commonwealth Park in Culpeper, Virginia, today. The class was held in the Grand Prix Field at the Cosequin® U.S. Grand Prix League Invitational Finals Horse Show. Christie was the fastest of eight double-clear rounds and beat a field of 26 entries. No Doubt is a 14-hand, nine-year-old Haflinger-Welsh pony that Christie has been riding for three years. As owner/rider, Christie earned $1,500 for her win. Christie has been riding since she was three years old and currently trains with Linda Mancini. "I went to all of the HITS Catskills shows and a few others to qualify. Making it to the Finals was my goal," said Christie. "I qualified last year for the Pony Jumper Finals here and placed third. This year we won so we're all excited." Dave Ballard of Ontario, Canada, designed the course.

Natural Western Riding
Cathy Hanson will take time off from AQHA World Championship competition to autograph her new book, Natural Western Riding. Hanson, who has six horses competing this year, co-authored the book with author/trainer Don Blazer. Hanson wrote a special section entitled, Mastering Trail Courses, and she did all the riding for the book's more than 40 demonstration photographs.

Culpeper Margie Engle and Hidden Creek's Perin Win $100,000 Cosequin® Invitational Grand Prix at Cosequin USGPL Finals
CULPEPER, VA (September 30, 2001)--U.S. Sydney Olympic Team Member Margie Engle, 43, of Wellington, Florida, riding her Olympic mount Hidden Creek's Perin, beat a field of 26 entries that included eight Olympians, to win the $100,000 Cosequin® Invitational Grand Prix at the Cosequin U.S. Grand Prix League Invitational Finals in Culpeper, Virginia, today. Perin earned $30,000 for his owner, Hidden Creek Farm. "This was one of the strongest fields that I've shown against in a long time," said Engle. "There were a lot of the same people here that were at Spruce Meadows, which is the biggest Grand Prix in the world. Most people used their top horses."

4th Oct. 2001 HITS Purchases New Site in Ocala for 2002 Season
SAUGERTIES, NY (October 1, 2001)-Horse Shows In the Sun (HITS), producer of six world class hunter/jumper horse show circuits nationwide, has announced the purchase of a new site in Ocala, Florida, for the five-week HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. The new facility, formerly Post Time Training Center, is a 300+ acre property located two miles west of the current facility on Highway 27. HITS crews will prepare the new show grounds to be ready for the 2002 Ocala Winter Circuit which will run from February 6 to March 10.
The Post Time Training Center was originally built for thoroughbred racehorses. The 300+ acres are professionally landscaped and feature gated entrances, 52 miles of four-board fencing, 26 permanent barns that house 500 stalls, numerous paddocks, bridle paths, and additional buildings for the horse show office, restaurant, and on-site school.

Jerez 2002 JEREZ 2002: Positive Result For The Second Test Event
Last week end (28/30 September) Jerez de la Frontera (Spain) hosted the second scheduled Test Event for next year's World Equestrian Games. After the International driving competition that was successfully run on the second week of September, WEG 2002 Organizing Committee staged an International Three Day Event (CCI**).
The competition had the aim of testing facilities and tuning the organizing team for next year, therefore it represented an ideal occasion for delegations from all over the world to arrive in South of Spain to familiarize with the competition venues where, in exactly one year time, the biggest ever equestrian event (seven world titles awarded in the same contest at the same time) will take place. Eighteen riders in total (from Australia, France and Spain) competed in the CCI** which saw the final victory of Didier Dhennin, member of the French cavalry troup 'Cadre Noir', riding his eight year old mare Fine Fleur V Ene HN.

Culpeper Marilyn Little and Lassango Win $25,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper High Invitational at Cosequin USGPL Finals
CULPEPER, VA (September 30, 2001)--Marilyn Little, 19, of Frederick, Maryland, aboard the stallion Lassango, bested a field of 27 horses to win the $25,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper High Invitational at the Cosequin® U. S. Grand Prix League Finals in Culpeper, Virginia, today. Ms. Little owns the eight-year-old, 16.1-hand German-bred stallion with her family's Raylyn Farm, and took home $7,500 for her win. Dave Ballard of Ontario, Canada, designed the course. "I did my first Grand Prix ever in Culpeper when I was 16," said Little. "Now here I am at 19. It's a good way of gauging how far you've come. I'm in exactly the same place three years later where I did my first Grand Prix, and now I'm qualified for this class. And I qualified in the middle of the field. It's good to see, and it's a good accomplishment, not necessarily winning, but just to say 'Look how far I've come and progressed as a rider'."

Culpeper Bert Mutch and Nelson B Win $25,000 Pre-Green Hunter Invitational at Cosequin® USGPL Finals
CULPEPER, VA (September 29)-Bert Mutch of Berryville, Virginia, riding Nelson B won the $25,000 Pre-Green Hunter Invitational Sponsored by Stillwell-Hansen, Inc. & Four Winds Farm at the Cosequin® U.S. Grand Prix League Finals in Culpeper, Virginia, today. The judges scored the duo as the best in a field of 32 horses. Mutch and Nelson earned an average score of 85.5 after two rounds, taking first place and $7,500 for owner Pierre Jolicoeur of Culpeper, Virginia.
"I was so nervous, I rode the whole course, every flying change with them," said Jolicoeur. Jolicoeur imported the six-year-old Dutch gelding a year ago as a jumper prospect and noted that the horse's pedigree includes jumping stars Nimmerdor and Marco Polo. Both Jolicoeur and Mutch rode Nelson in classes and earned the points to qualify for the finals, but Jolicoeur gave the ride to Mutch for today's class.

FAIR HILL, MD-October 2, 2001-Five-time United States Equestrian Team (USET) pairs driving champion Lisa Singer of Chadds Ford, PA, heads an impressive list of drivers who have filed entries to compete in the 2001 Fair Hill International, October 25-28, at the Fair Hill Natural Resources Area in Fair Hill, MD.
Singer will be seeking to defend the Fair Hill pairs title she won last year. Singer, who has won two Jaguar Triple Crown of Driving titles (1996 and 1997), made history in 1997 when she became the first driver ever to sweep all three Triple Crown events in the same year. She is the only woman ever to win the USET Pairs Driving Championship, a feat she has now accomplished five times, including the last three years in a row.

New York, NY- October 2, 2001-National Horse Show Chairman Eugene R. Mische has announced that the 118th edition of the National Horse Show, presented by Budweiser, will be held at Madison Square Garden, November 2-4, as originally planned.
"Last month's terrorist attacks and the recent death of Sallie Wheeler, the National's Vice Chairman of the Board, led to a lot of speculation about the fate of the National Horse Show," Mische said. "It is important that the many rumors stop and that we proceed with our plans for this year's event. Keeping the National at Madison Square Garden this year is both a response to the terrorists and a tribute to Mrs. Wheeler."

Fair Hill, MD-October 2, 2001-The Fair Hill International Festival in the Country, host to some of the country's most prestigious equestrian competitions, will add the 2001 AHSA National Combined Driving Pony Championships (for singles, pairs, and teams) to its roster of events. The Fair Hill International returns to the Fair Hill Natural Resources Area in the beautiful Maryland countryside October 25-28, 2001.

When treating horses I am normally asked to help sort out strange behaviour patterns far more than any sort of physical problems. The vet must always be your first port of call when you suspect that there is anything amiss with your horse. Although Tara had asked me to come along to help Red with his Sarcoids it was clear that he’d had a hard life and whether or not there was an improvement in the Sarcoids he would definitely benefit from the emotional release that Reiki would provide.
Red is a 16hh. TB. He is a nice looking chestnut gelding. Tara told me what she knew of his history. As a youngster he had been raced. She had bought him from the meat man and when she got him home he tried to kill her. She had spent many hours with him, gaining his trust and settling him down. He was still a bit unpredictable but had improved immensely. She had ridden him from time to time but had felt that his back was that not great and just lately the Sarcoids in the girth area were so big that it was causing a problem with the tack. It was her dream to be able to ride him again and do some more serious work.

Express Steams Ahead!
The perfect Skewbald Shetland stallion - Butterby Express excelled this weekend at the Chaps UK International Show at Southview Equestrian Centre in Cheshire by holding his own amongst some of the best coloured horses and ponies in the country.
The spoils were shared on Saturday in hand by 14 year old Craig Chadwick from Catterick Garrison and on Sunday ridden to victory in the Horse of the Year Show Native, Traditional under 13hands qualifier by 14 year old Kaye Gilligan from Colburn. On Saturday, Express won the Shetland Class: the Small Native, Traditional Qualifier Final: 2nd and Reserve Champion in the Graded Stallion and Colt Class: and also stood Reserve Champion in the Native, Traditional Cob class 14.2. and under to the fabulous Mr. Moses.
On Sunday he won the coveted Horse of the Year Qualifier in the shetland, native and traditional under 13.0 clas

Big Ben Memorial Fund Update
In this past year the Equine Research Centre (ERC) has made an excellent start on delivering colic education and prevention information as a result of the Big Ben Memorial Fund. New educational material, both completed and in the works, include: a traveling display, fact sheets, posters, and nutrition courses. These highlight ways to identify the early signs of colic, management techniques, and feeding practices to help avoid colic.
On the Research front, the ERC has been planning a busy year of colic- related research. One of the projects that donations to the Big Ben Memorial Fund have helped support is examining the effects of dietary starch on gas production, and is a project in conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA).
Colic is an ongoing battle for our equine partners and we owe it to them to do everything in our power to control this painful, life-threatening ailment.

Scottish Equestrian Vaulting Team
Vaulting is the unusual sport of gymnastics on the back of a cantering horse. It is a huge sport on the continent but is only now becoming a truly recognised sport in Great Britain
SEVT was formed in 1996, with the aim of producing a team capable of competing internationally. The squad was made up of the 4 vaulting groups in Scotland; Lauderdale, Sheildbank, Gleneagles and Highland.
The team are always keen to do as many demonstrations throughout the year as possible as this is the best preparation for the major competitions. Although based in Scotland the Team are the only one in Great Britain that can show Team vaulting at International level and are very prepared to travel.
The team is totally self funded as they cannot gain lottery support due to vaulting not being an olympic discipline. The team are also always looking for keen owners for there truly amazing horses and if anyone has a horse of Elementary level or above with a calm temperament that they feel would like a change of career then feel free to get in touch.

A good turn out at Solihull Riding Club on Saturday evening saw Dan Franklin, Equine Communicator, demonstrate his talents with two different horses.
The first horse was an easily excitable mare and Dan played with her until she was ready to accept a rider, which she did with confidence. The horse then went on to be ridden during the interval in the second arena where the owner could see the level of performance the horse obtained.
The second horse had quite a history to it in as much that at the age of 3 years she was part broken, but would not accept a saddle, bridle or rider. Several trainers had previously worked with the horse with little success.

NHJC National Finals Will Award Championships in 25 Divisions at Capital Challenge, September 29-October 7
(RHINEBECK, NY) September 28, 2001-The National Hunter Jumper Council National Finals Horse Show will be held at the Capital Challenge Horse Show in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, from September 29-October 7, in the Prince George's Equestrian Center. Marshall & Sterling and Great American Insurance Company are sponsoring the NHJC Finals. Meredith Manor Training Mythunderstandings - Recipes for Riding
A new student recently told me he was diligently taking notes, carefully describing the corridor of pressures that create each a specific shape we ask horses to take when we are riding. He planned to take all his class notes and develop them into a book. Then, he figured, people could read the book, know exactly what combination of pressures created what shapes, and every movement they wanted to get would just happen like magic when they rode. It would finally make riding simple and easy.
Since any instructor or trainer welcomes initiative and forward motion that can be molded into the activity they want, I didn't say anything. I just let him go on thinking that was going to work. I knew that before long he'd be back, scratching his head and wondering why it didn't.
One of the things I knew he was going to find out was that while a corridor of basic pressures creates the feeling of a specific shape in the horse, how the horse expresses that shape depends on a whole lot of other factors that are not as easy to describe on paper as a specific combination of seat, hand, and leg.
At one level, it's kind of like recipes. I can tell you that if you mix milk, eggs, and sugar together you can make a pudding. Someone else could take that same milk, eggs, and sugar and turn them into a custard or a soufflé. There's more to the end result than just the ingredients alone.

Top Competition Reveals Very Best in Horsepower
Peter Storr became National Dressage Champion for the second consecutive year at the Mercedes-Benz National Dressage Championships in Warwickshire, 21st – 23rd September, where the cream of British Dressage riders and horses gathered to contest National Championship titles at all levels.

The title of National Dressage Champion 2001 was decided on Sunday, with the scores from the Butchers Pet Care Grand Prix Kür being added to the Grand Prix scores from the previous day.  Peter Storr and Gambrinus scored 74.31%, which put them 3% clear of Nicky and Giorgio S, and well into the lead.  A superb performance by Emile Faurie and Reuters Rascher Hopes put him into second place, but Peter's dazzling display had confirmed him as National Dressage Champion 2001.

Relaunched horseracing equestrian marketing consultancy sponsors young dressage rider
Swindon-based Racing and Equestrian consultancy, Foxhill Racing Promotions, has relaunched as Sporting Horse Promotions to coincide with the business’s move to new offices at Idstone (Wiltshire) – and has announced a new dressage sponsorship, as part of a part grant-funded recovery business plan following the impact on the business earlier this year by FMD.

Culpeper Jill Henselwood and Toyz R Us Win $25,000 HITS Wild Card Grand Prix at Cosequin USGPL Finals
CULPEPER, VA (September 28, 2001)--Canadian Jill Henselwood, 38, of Oxford Mills, Ontario, riding Toyz R Us won the $25,000 HITS Wild Card Grand Prix at the Cosequin® U.S. Grand Prix League Finals Horse Show in Culpeper, Virginia, today. Henselwood bested a field of 43 that included five Olympians, and was the fastest of three double-clears in an eight-horse Jump-Off. Toyz R Us earned $7,500 for her owner, Juniper Farms Ltd, Henselwood's training stable.
Henselwood was already qualified for the Finals and didn't need the Wild Card win to compete in the $100,000 Cosequin® Invitational Grand Prix on Sunday. The Wild Card went to Jimmy Torano of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on Lancier 4, who placed third, which was the highest place earned by a rider not already qualified for Sunday's Grand Prix.

Corsa Takes Pole Position
Vauxhall's Corsa is now the UK's number one training car, according to figures released by the Driving Instructors' Association Britain's leading professional organisation for driving instructors. In a highly competitive market, the ever-popular Corsa has knocked rival Ford Fiesta off the much coveted pole position, into second place. Nissan's Micra has now slipped to third place, with Peugeot in fourth. Renault is rapidly gaining ground with its new Clio and the Toyota Yaris takes sixth. Rover, currently in seventh position, is expected to make an imminent comeback and Fiat, VW and Citroen are battling it out at the rear.
