HRH the Infanta
Doña Pilar de Borbon sees for herself how the preparations
for the World Equestrian Games are progressing
On the occasion
of the recent annual meeting of the International Equestrian Federation
in Jerez, HRH the Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbon, accompanied
by Federation chiefs, did not miss the opportunity yesterday (Wednesday,
21th)to visit the Chapin sports complex, the main venue for the World
Equestrian Games in September 2002.
On site
at the invitation of the Jerez 2002 Organising Committee, the FEI
president praised the way the works were progressing and pointed out
what a great advantage it is to have all the horses in the same area
- the 30 hectare Chapín venue.

Keeping
abreast of all the necessary information in horse health care
is a constant challenge, especially since new problems and
solutions are always being placed before our eyes and ears.
Horse owners want only the best for their animals, which is
sometimes difficult considering they do not always have all
the information needed to make an accurate diagnosis of a
condition or determine the proper course of treatment that
should be taken.

One such problem
came to the forefront this spring and summer that has had owners,
veterinarians and farriers alike stymied. The signs are hooves that
chronically are fractured and poor - looking, with the hoof wall actually
peeling away. The cause is commonly believed to be onychomycosis (sometimes
known as white line disease), a fungus that exists in the dirt. Horses
that previously had strong healthy hooves are showing signs of infection,
as well as those who have had problems with hoof quality in the past.

In today's
world of horseshoeing there are basically two theories that
are being addressed. Walter Koespich of Dutchtown Forge states
the following: "Clinical Shoeing and Real World Shoeing.
In clinical shoeing you shoe the horse in what ever way is
best for the horse without worrying about what a judge may
think, and when dealing with a lame horse that is the way
to go, before you can worry about how the horse travels, he
must first be sound.

Real World Shoeing,
on the other hand, is the what the shoeing farriers do on a day to
day basis. If a show horse isn't competitive, it wouldn't be a show
horse very long. If a trainer doesn't produce winners he wouldn't
be a trainer long and if show horse farrier doesn't shoe winners,
he will be shoeing a different kind of horse before long."
"Shoeing show
horses today is a dilemma for the farrier. On the other hand you have
the very good principles that are laid down by the educators today
and on the other hand you have to consider the kind of movement the
judges are looking for.
Bottom line is,
judges and stop watch determine how show horses are trained and shod!
The farriers responsibility is to shoe for the judge, keeping as close
to principles of good shoeing as you can."

Accepts Seat On USA Equestrian Board
Kathleen
Raine has accepted an appointment to the athlete position on
the USA Equestrian Board of Directors vacated by Robert Dover's
resignation.

will be voted on by the full board at the 2002 USA Equestrian Annual
Meeting, held January 9-13, 2002 at the Hilton Charlotte & Towers,
Charlotte, North Carolina, or at its next meeting, should a special

World Jumping Riders Rankings
Participants to the Top Ten Final are named
This special edition of the FEI/Gandini World Riders Rankings decides
on the participation field of the Final of the Top Ten to be held
in Geneva on 8 December.
Ludger Beerbaum (GER) is still in the lead with a total of 3253 points,
823 points ahead of his runner-up Ludo Philippaerts (BEL).
Michael Whitaker (GBR), who was placed eleventh at the end of last
month, made it to the Top 10 with a total of 220 points earned this
week-end in Stuttgart (GER).
Good Start For Michael Freud In The New Driving World Cup
German driver Michael Freund won the opening competition of the Indoor
Word Cup Driving in Stuttgart (GER) last week-end.
In Memorium
Ian Dudgeon, a three-time Olympic Eventing rider from Ireland recently
died aged 77.
Rembrandt is Dead
One of the most successful Dressage horses of all times, Rembrandt
recently died aged 24. Under the saddle of the German rider Nicole
Uphoff, Rembrandt won 13 gold medals at Olympic Games, World and European
Dressage Championships.

EQUITANA got off
to a great start with competition at the National Equestrian Centre
in Werribee on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18. Crowds piled in on
both days to catch their favourite athletes compete in one or more
of the 13 different competitions. Enthusiastic competitors of all
ages battled it out for their chance of victory, and many dedicated
friends and family settled back to enjoy a friendly and sociable weekend.

HRH the Infanta
Doña Pilar de Borbón, president of the International
Equestrian Federation (FEI), today arrived in Jerez, the venue for
the World Equestrian Games 2002, to preside over the annual meeting
of the FEI's Bureau.
On behalf of the Games' Organising Committee, Fino, the Jerez 2002
mascot, officially welcomed Doña Pilar to the city in a delightful
event devoid of any kind of formality. The International Equestrian
Federation president returned the gesture with affection and reciprocal
friendliness.

on the Mound, Edinburgh 16th December 2001
A message from the Scottish Countryside Alliance - The Scottish
Steering Committee has confirmed that they are planning a major
rally and march in Edinburgh on Sunday 16th December. At this stage,
the date remains to be confirmed by the relevant bodies, but this
is expected within the next week.
The short notice reflects the importance of a major public demonstration
before the Scottish Parliament considers, in its final form, the
already heavily criticised Watson Bill. The Scottish Countryside
Alliance is mobilising this protest by Scotsmen against the Bill
and is seeking support from all those who share their concern and
anger elsewhere in the British Isles and Overseas.

International Show Jumping Championships
Human Horses
At Olympia!
This year’s
Olympia International Show Jumping Championships (19th-23rd
December 2001) will be another first for British Show Jumping
when two unique displays will be joining the billing of world-class
entertainment.
|
The human horses,
Matthieu Nassif and friends will make a whirlwind visit to England
when, on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of the show, they will
demonstrate their amazing jumping skills by leaping over the show
jumping courses on their own two legs!
As if that wasn’t
enough alternative entertainment, the crowds at Olympia will be entertained
all week by Mountain Bike Champion, Jez Avery who has now turned his
incredible talent to entertaining audiences with his incredible stunts
and his ability to jump distances of 25ft and heights of up to 8ft
– so guess what he’ll be doing at Olympia? Along with entertaining
the crowds waiting to come into the show, the organiser’s have
it in mind to see quite how good he is at jumping ….. show jumps!

Seventeen
American Paint Horses earn top honors from USDF
|
FORT WORTH, Texas-The
United States Dressage Federation (USDF) will honor 17 American Paint
Horses for their outstanding accomplishments during a special ceremony
Dec. 1 at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando, Fla. The awards celebration
is part of USDF's annual convention, which will take place Nov. 28-Dec.
1 in the Sunshine State.
The organization
will present USDF All-Breed Awards for outstanding performances in
events governed by the USDF and supported by the American Paint Horse
Association
(APHA).

The North American
Young Riders' Championships
Young equestrians
from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean Islands
compete in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines of Show Jumping,
Dressage, and Eventing. The competition is run under rules of the
FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale, the international
governing body for equestrian sport). The NAYRC is also designated
as an official USA Junior Olympics–Equestrian event.
Many of the world's
best equestrians got their start at the NAYRC including Olympic Medalists
Greg Best and Karen Lende O'Connor.

Gold Horses, Green
Horses, Color Coordinated Riders
When new students first arrive
here at Meredith Manor, we need to evaluate their current
riding capability is so that we can match them up with appropriate
horses. So everybody starts out with evaluation rides on our
"goldie oldies" to see how they do and moves on
to other horses from there.
|
A "goldie oldie" is a schoolmaster,
a horse with a rich and sophisticated vocabulary or understanding
of aid pressures. These horses are not the same as " babysitters".
A babysitter is a horse that is programmed in a routine and will perform
that routine even if its rider asks for it the wrong way. The schoolmaster,
by contrast, understands and responds to full range of nuances within
a corridor of aids. Since we know that the horse is very knowledgeable,
its response to the new student's application of aids tells us volumes
about what the rider already knows or still needs to learn at this
point.
The "green" horse is the opposite
of a goldie oldie. This is a horse that has no vocabulary at all yet
or only a limited one. The most sophisticated rider cannot get on
a green horse and perform upper level dressage movements or run through
a complicated reining pattern. The rider could ask for shapes and
movements correctly but the horse, no matter how willing, simply would
not understand what was being asked.

As the
cold months of winter close around us concern for our horse's
health and condition becomes more pressing. Aspects of management
that are most important are temperature maintenance, nutrition
and hoof care. By monitoring these, keeping your horse in
top health can be easy and fairly trouble-free.

First let us look
at keeping your horse's body temperature maintained at the proper
level. Evaluate his living qualities; is he strictly pasture-bound,
or does he split his time between a box stall and turnout. For horses
that spend much time outdoors a windblock or shelter is necessary,
whether it is natural or manmade. If your horse is both an indoor
and outdoor kind be sure to watch your barn temperature and your animal's
hair growth. During the mild early months of winter allow your horse
to develop his thick coat and acclimatize to the dropping temps. Avoid
blanketing during this time; you really are not helping your horse
by preventing him from experiencing the changing weather conditions.
As the season progresses, again watch how you use blankets. If your
horse has been properly acclimated, they will be unnecessary; your
horse should stay comfortable as the temperature falls provided he
has an area in which to escape the wind and wet.

price of gasoline going up, up, up, we may have to give up
our high powered chariots, and go back to riding the horse.
(It was
a problem with the chariot which caused us to ride the horse
is the first place.)

About 5,500 years
ago man was trying to figure out what to do with horses and wheels.,
when va, va voooom, the chariot was invented. By 2000 B.C. the chariot-culture
was zooming along and expanding. It started somewhere between the
Black Sea and the Mediterranean and got as far north as China. Complete
chariots with spoked wheels, full sets of harness, weapons and the
bones of both driver and team were found in the graves of the Shan
Dynasty which dates about 1500 B.C.
