The True Cost of Shoeing a Horse
© Equine Management, Auction, and Appraisal Services, Inc
When you search for a farrier, one of the first things that you consider is the cost of shoeing and trimming. Do you really know what it should cost to have your horses trimmed and shod? There are many factors to consider: Is the person full-time or part-time, do they belong to any farriers' organizations, do they have an education (farrier school, college degrees, etc.), and how long has the person been shoeing?
A full time farrier may see as many as 11,000 hoofs a year while a part time shoer maybe 500. There can be a big gap in the knowledge of a full time professional and the person down the road who has another job, or the person who went to a two-week course or self study.
We are just now being able to prove that improper trimming and shoeing as acolt, or continued improper shoeing and trimming will lead to lameness earlier in a horse life. The theories in shoeing are changing as we can prove with science study and our new technologies what is going on with the horse in biomechanical movements.

NFU Response To Royal Society Foot and Mouth Inquiry
The clear shortcomings and uncertainties in the handling of the foot and mouth crisis must be addressed if the UK is to avoid a repeat of the disaster or indeed any other infectious animal disease, the NFU said today.
There must be more investment in research into animal diseases to find new and better diagnostic and epidemiological methods, the NFU said in its response to the Royal Society's Inquiry into Infectious Disease in Livestock.

Plans For SEIB/BEF Young Horse Evaluation Series Get Off To A Good Start
Response to the announcement of the first BEF Young Horse Evaluation series has thrilled sponsor South Essex Insurance Brokers. "Our confidence in the series has been justified at this very early stage," said managing director Barry Fehler.
The series, designed to improve the quality of British sports horses and give leading riders the quality mounts to win Olympic titles, involves a nationwide series of Evaluation tests for four-year-old registered with recognised British breed societies. These will be held at a number of centres around the country in Spring next year. The championship, at a venue yet to be announced, will be divided into classes for young event, dressage and showjumping horses.
"Many people have already been in touch promising support and entries," said working party chairman Richard Meade. "and there is general recognition that the scheme is the first step towards improving the overall quality of our horses. Many breed societies are also expected to donate special awards for their highest-placed registered horses."

U.S. Driving For the Disabled President Michael Muir Completes Cross-Country Drive with a Parade through Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C—November 29, 2001—U.S. Driving for the Disabled (USDFD) president Michael Muir led a triumphant parade of six horse-drawn carriages through Washington D.C. November 1 to mark the completion of his ten-month Horsedrawn Journey Across America.
The parade, planned for months but made more challenging by recent security issues, featured three pairs, three singles and a “highly charged international cast of characters” said Muir. “We were flying Old Glory, several state flags and the banners of Germany, Sweden, Mexico and Great Britain, representing everyone who took part in this amazing adventure.”
A delegation from the Swedish embassy joined Maryland Congressman Bob Erlich to see off the parade which lined up in front of the reflecting pool, with the U.S. Capitol as a backdrop.

Training Performance Horses
You can learn horse training techniques, train your horse with professional step by step help, and earn a college certificate--all at the same time, and at home.
A Horse of Course
Training Performance Horses is an online, distance learning course which begins before the first saddle and takes the student through each progressive step of training until the horse is learning to perform the flying change of leads. The focus of the course is on the "how-to" steps of teaching the horse forward, backward and lateral exercises, proper cadence and stride, impulsion, suppleness and collection. Any horse and any trainer, no matter what their previous experience, will gain new insights to training without force, gimmicks or specialized equipment.
The course isn't about western or English, it is designed to give the trainer and horse all the basic movements and footfall sequences necessary to allow the partners to advance to the highest levels of performance at any discipline, if that is their desire.

BETA BETA Supports Campaign To Fight For FMD Compensation
BETA - the British Equestrian Trade Association - has joined a campaign to help businesses severely affected by the FMD crisis fight for compensation.
The UK Rural Business Campaign has been set up to seek compensation from the government for losses suffered by all businesses involved directly or indirectly in the rural economy, as a result of mal-administration and human rights breaches.
The English and Welsh Tourist Boards have estimated that £5.1 billion in turnover has been lost by rural businesses since the FMD outbreak began in February 2001. BETA estimates that by the end of the year the trade sector of the equestrian industry alone will have lost over £170 million in turnover.
Another aim of the campaign is to challenge, through the courts, proposed legislation to allow the culling of any animal without right of appeal. This could affect every animal and pet owner in the country.

Supplemental Knowledge
© Equine Management, Auction, and Appraisal Services, Inc
Today's horse market holds a bewildering array of supplements that claim to be essential to your horse's good health, or promise to cure a variety of ailments. Deciding which claims are justified and which are the products of the copywriter's imagination can be both a lengthy process and an expensive one.
Manufacturers have plenty of competition for the horse owner's dollar, and it is often easier to follow the company's every recommendation rather than doing the necessary research to determine if your horse really needs a particular product. For those who do not understand the horse's requirements it is easy to be swayed by the advertisement words; backed with knowledge of what the products really do for the horse the owner can make informed choices about where to spend his money.

The Criollo horse, handiness and endurance
The chosen mount of legendary Gauchos, the Criollo horse is the symbol of equestrian cultures in Latin America. This hardy little horse is exceptionally easy-handling. To invoke its name is to fuel dreams of adventure…
The Criollo horse or breed, literally "creole", has no actual name of its own. It is the direct descendant of horses brought to the New World since the arrival of Columbus, imported by Spanish conquistadores during the XVIth century and notably by Don Pedro Mendoza, founder of Buenos Aires, in 1535. Many of these war horses escaped or were abandoned, and rapidly returned to a more primal state in an environment perfect for their development, the Pampa. For the next four centuries, the Criollo breed adapted itself to the vast South American plains through the pitiless process of natural selection. This adaptation to the rude conditions of life on the Pampa was determined by selective factors acting on wild populations, which permitted them to develop qualities of physical hardiness and resistance to diseases.
Used for working cattle by the Gauchos, the Criollo is still an element in the daily work of peones, the herders and cowboys of South America that prize the horse for its hardiness, endurance and strong physical condition.
The Criollo is also appreciated in many traditional equestrian games , including polo, a national sport in Argentina. Only in the realm of outdoor nature riding can the full pleasure of riding a Criollo be experienced. It is a horse made for the great outdoors, ideal for long voyages or trail rides, trekking or western riding. Extremely easy-handling, its training as a cattle worker or even war horse seem a part of the not-so-distant past.
Concerning its temperament, the Criollo can be fearless and independent. It is often said that the Criollo is a one-man horse; it is often very affectionate, but doesn't trust just anybody. Once trust is established, it gives all of itself with amazing courage and tenacity. It fears nothing and goes absolutely anywhere!
