New American Paint Horse book released
More than Color reveals remarkable lives of horses that set Paints a breed apart

FORT WORTH, Texas - Readers interested in gaining a deeper understanding about the American Paint Horse and the outstanding horses that had the biggest impact on shaping the breed can learn a lot from More than Color: Paint Horse Legends, an informative new book by Frank Holmes.
Few people would argue that the American Paint Horse is one of the most attractive horse breeds in the world. A magnificent spectrum of colors and an endless variety of coat patterns have contributed to the horse's widespread popularity.
Vibrant and colorful coats, however, are far from the only characteristics that have endeared this magnificent breed to hundreds of thousands of Paint Horse owners in 43 nations over the past 40 years. In More than Color: Paint Horse Legends, Holmes details not only the looks, but the lives of 18 Paint Horse foundation stallions, mares and geldings who established the American Paint Horse as a distinct breed.
A noted author and equine historian, Holmes tells the story about Paints by delving into the lives of the remarkable foundation horses, citing not only their accomplishments but also the physical and mental attributes that made them so special. At the same time, Holmes explores the lives of the trainers, owners and breeders who were associated with these horses. The work represents one of the most comprehensive biographical sketches ever written about American Paint Horses.

Comedy And Bargains At Hickstead's Equine Event
Popular comedy television shows will be the theme running through the public forum at the Hickstead Equine Event, to be held at the All England Jumping Course on January 10-12.
Hickstead's version of "They Think it's All Over" is likely to be the highlight, built around the dry humour of showjumper Tim Stockdale coupled with the outrageous comments of dressage trainer and producer Dane Rawlins and, at their mercy, Irish showjumping team member and British Jumping Derby winner Peter Charles, European eventing champion and Badminton winner Pippa Funnell, Young Rider European individual silver and team gold showjumper Jamie Wingrave and Young Rider dressage star Charlotte Edmonds.
Peter, Pippa and Tim will also feature in "Room 101" Hickstead style, airing their pet hates and it is a lottery as to who will parade the catwalk for a lighthearted fashion show "Model (mis)Behavior."
Farrier Richard Chard talks about his job, while a well known local veterinary surgeon describes the highs and lows of "Vets in Practice." Memorable moments - and some best forgotten - are highlighted in a video action feature.

National Disability Sports Alliance Conducts Successful Forum on Judging Dressage Riders With Physical Disabilities
Kingston, RI—November 13, 2002—The United States Equestrian Team (USET) Olympic Training Center in Gladstone played host to a forum on judging Dressage riders with physical disabilities, November 1-3. The forum was conducted by the National Disability Sports Alliance (NDSA) in association with USA Equestrian (USAE).
The forum was designed to promote a better awareness of the International Paralympic Equestrian Committee (IPEC) dressage tests and classes through education. It was open to all USAE judges on the roster. Judges with an “r” or above participated free of charge, while there was a nominal fee for judges at the lower levels. Close to 30 judges participated making the forum a tremendous success.
The moderator of the forum was Inger Bryant of England, a member of the IPEC Committee and an international judge. Bryant is deeply involved with the disabled rider program in England and feels the United States needs a boost in promoting the sport.
“There are over 25,000 riders with disabilities competing in England compared to only 70 active participants in the US,” said Bryant “The judges who were at the forum are already good able-bodied judges, they only need to know the differences to make themselves able to judge IPEC classes.”

Success of ILPH Loan Horses
The ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) has 455 of their horses and ponies out on loan in Scotland, the majority of which have come from their equine recovery and rehabilitation centre, Belwade Farm, in Aberdeenshire.
Around the Scottish shows this summer some of these equines, from Clydesdales to tiny ponies, have started to make a name for themselves by getting into the ribbons.

With a policy of rehoming the horses and ponies that come into their centres once they are rehabilitated the ILPH ensures that it has the space to be able to take in needy cases.
At present Belwade Farm at Aboyne has several horses and ponies that are looking for suitable loan homes. Among these are 3 thoroughbreds that need experienced riders, extra special care and lots of tlc and Pegasus a 13.2 hh Highland pony who cannot be ridden but would make a lovely companion, is very hardy and lives on fresh air.

BETA Sponsor New Feed Forum At Horse and Country Fair
BETA is supporting the Horse and Country Fair at Sandown Park by sponsoring a new discussion session - The Feed Forum.
The organisers of the fair which runs on April 12 and 13 are working with BETA to bring together some of the leading figures and experts from the feed industry who will be on hand to discuss the latest developments and technological advances.
The forum will include presentations on topics relevant to feeding horses and ponies including how to understand legislation on feed packaging and how to better understand what ingredients are in the bag.

"We are delighted to be supporting the Feed Forum at the Horse and Country Fair," said BETA Chief Executive and Secretary Claire Williams.
"There are so many new developments concerning feed and supplements and we felt the forum would provide visitors to the event with the ideal opportunity to find out more about both new legislation and rulings.
"With so many feeds on the market, it is understandable if horse owners become confused on what is the best feeding regime for different types of animal, but the Feed Forum will give them the opportunity to ask questions and give them more direction."

USET Executive Committee Responds to USA Equestrian
Gladstone, NJ—November 11, 2002—The officers and executive committee of the United States Equestrian Team (USET) issue the following statement in response to the November 1 communication from USA Equestrian (USAE):
USA Equestrian, under the direction of its President, Alan Balch, has maintained a policy of continuous communications designed to cloud the issue of governance of equestrian sport.

The funds wasted on mass mailings and overnight charges, as well as the time and effort wasted in creating their misleading letters, press releases and emails, are a misuse of resources at a time when our sport can ill afford it. The USET has tried to steer clear of waging a communications battle with USA Equestrian and adhere to a policy of maintaining our focus on our mission of serving our athletes, while still working with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), and USA Equestrian where possible, to resolve the dispute within our sport. However, as has happened periodically over the last couple of years, we are currently faced with a communication from USAE so egregiously misleading that we have no choice but to respond.

The Newfoundland Pony
As long as there have been Newfoundlanders in this newest province of Canada there have been ponies assisting them in their labours. As the people have struggled to survive inhospitable weather and landscape and a changing society, so the ponies have had a struggle to adapt to the changes brought on by a modern, mechanized world.
The Newfoundland Pony is descended from those pony breeds commonly used in Europe for draft purposes. In 1611 John Guy brought Dartmoor and Exmoor ponies to the island. Lord Falkland brought over a hardy type for living on hard ground.
In the 1800s when settlement was finally encouraged small draft horses were brought from New England and Nova Scotia. Sable Island ponies came in 1852. In 1939 Welsh ponies arrived from Toronto and were cross bred with Newfoundlands.
The ponies' work year was mainly in the fall, winter, and spring when they hauled caplin and seaweed for the gardens and firewood for the winter. In summer the owners were occupied at sea and ponies were turned out onto open spaces to roam freely and breed.
No law restricted their movements.
The animal that evolved from 400 years of island interbreeding is now known as the Newfoundland Pony. Taken as a whole its characteristics are distinct and unique.
The ponies have a good temperament, are docile and easy to work with. They have a color range from black to brown to bays to roans, chestnuts, and greys, including various shades of dun. They usually have dark legs and manes.
They have a heavy coat which can change color and character seasonally. They have small furry ears and a low set of tail to conserve heat in winter. They have a short back and a height that ranges from 11.0 to 14.2 hands. Evolution gave them legs that are close together so they can travel narrow woods paths freely.

A Horse of Course

A Horse, Of Course
by Don Blazer
When you ask a horse what he wants for Christmas, you don't expect much of an answer.
"What do you want for Christmas, Walter," I asked?
Instantly he produced a list!
The fact he had the list really didn't surprise me; but the contents of the list did.
The list read, "sweet feed, eggs, molasses, bread, parsley, celery leaves, carrot tops, water, parsnips, Lifesaver mints, peppermint candy and seedless red grapes." The list continued, "measuring cup, tablespoons, egg beater, blender, small round bowl, large round bowl and a cake pan."
I looked at Walter and Walter looked at me. One of us didn't have a clue. Obviously, it was me.
