Five IAHA® Members Receive National Volunteer Service Awards

Volunteers are the backbone of the International Arabian Horse Association® (IAHA®). To honor some of the most noteworthy volunteers, IAHA established the National Volunteer Service Awards nine years ago. This year five individuals were chosen by their peers as outstanding models of selfless service to IAHA--Lois Miller, Lollie Ames, Frank and Lana Gaddie and Elton Weeks.

Lois Miller has been a tireless worker for IAHA at local, regional and national levels since 1974. She is a member of the Pennsylvania Arabian Horse Association (PAHA) and has served as its president and secretary. She has also written for the PAHA news at various times over the years. She was the Region 15 Director from 1994-1997 and is currently serving on the IAHA/USAE Arabian Rules Committee, the Dressage Committee and the Bylaws Committee. Miller's hard work, spirit and enthusiasm have been an integral part of the success of the Pennsylvania AHA, Region 15, and IAHA in general.

Lollie Ames from Jordan, Minnesota in Region 10 worked diligently for IAHA over the years, including serving as Region 10 Director from 1996-2000. She has contributed greatly to the success of the Youth Nationals as a member of the Youth Nationals Show Commission and has put in countless volunteer hours to support IAHA youth and this show. In addition, Ames is an active member of the Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian Registries Board, the Breeders Sweepstakes Commission and other IAHA Committees. Ames is an exceptional volunteer whose dedication has contributed much to IAHA.

Frank and Lana Gaddie from Louisville, Kentucky in Region 14 are probably most recognizable at the U.S. Nationals Horse Show. They make up two of the three people that work in the Awards Room. Since 2000, they have unpacked every ribbon and trophy after trophy to set-up the awards room. Every trophy, plaque, garland and ribbon is displayed in a beautiful presentation. Their dependability and efficiency in ensuring that all awards are delivered to each ring and before every session is commendable.

Elton Weeks from Coffeyville, Kansas in Region 8 purchased his first Arabian in 1961 and three years later formed the first Arabian horse club in Kansas. He has attended IAHA conventions 35 times since the first Kansas club began--missing only 4 conventions in 38 years. Weeks is also a charter member of the Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian Registries Board. He is a gentle, soft-spoken man who carries a wealth of knowledge about the Arabian horse. His passion for the Arabian horse and all concerned has not failed for over 41 years. At the snappy age of 91 he still attends all of the Kansas Arabian Horse Society’s general meetings, stewards their Class A show, promotes activities to get more people involved with the Arabian horse and attends each and every IAHA Convention. He is truly an inspiration to all IAHA members.

IAHA® is a 28,000 member breed association that registers Half-Arabian and Anglo-Arabian horses, administers more than $4 million in prize money annually, produces national events, maintains official event records , recognizes more than 400 Arabian horse shows and distance rides and provides a ctivities and programs that promote Arabian horse breeding and ownership.
