PRESS RELEASE

February 2001

John Crawford - always fit for a challenge!
"always fit for a challenge"
A Florida Polo team comes to Scotland.

Getting polo established north of the Highland line is a tough job, but John Crawford rarely backs off from a challenge! So when combining a need to publicise a new Scottish Universities polo event with a suggestion that someone like John should ride side-saddle in a kilt to play polo, then that's when John takes on the job! The event which was first established last year, is being graciously hosted by the Dundee and Perth Polo Club and played at their grounds at Scone Palace this August then followed up by a grand Highland Ball.

With the event is in it's second year competitors are being invited from the USA. John is leaving the January snow and his riding centre (www.hayfield.com) in Aberdeen and heading off for sunny West Palm Beach Florida. There where every Winter over 5,000 "Snowbirds" as they are called, congregate to compete in their various chosen disciplines of the busy equestrian spring season he will find a team to invite. As a fellow polo player John is well accepted there, and is confident that a Florida polo team will be competing in Scotland this year.

The financial backing for John's venture has come indirectly from the UK government as they assist him to develop his own centre plus develop a two way trade between the USA, the UK and Europe generally. Although this particular venture is connected with polo, John is aware that there are many other opportunities in the equestrian field well worth pursuing. The venture developed directly from a contact through his Internet web-site www.Equiworld.net (which is now rated fourth in the world) and he continues to use the power of the Internet to develop commercial and sporting links with great success. While in Florida this time John will write a short report on the web-site entitled "Florida Focus" to let the world know more about the Florida horse scene as well as an occasional article for Florida's top magazine, Sidelines.

When asked "Why Florida?" John replied, "Well I was over last year and did some coaching, met a few people and had an absolute ball! So I suppose I am just back for more "fun in the sun" plus the social season." Despite this light hearted comment you can be sure that John will be mixing business with pleasure, meeting new clients, selling a horse or two and making new contacts before returning to the British BETA Equestrian Trade Fair in February and Equitana, (the world's biggest) in Germany this March. On his return to Florida in mid March John is prepared to promote British interests to the Americans in Florida, so if you are at all interested just get in touch with him.
With little doubt then there will be a University of Florida polo team playing at the Scone Palace grounds this Autumn and there will be members of the West Palm Beach County Equestrian Commission who promote equestrian business development in Palm Beach supporting them with great cheer. It has already been arranged that as part of the trip they shall also experience some of that world famous Scottish hospitality and be honoured guests at The Bowmore International Horse Trials at Blair Castle.

Without doubt they will receive the usual red carpet treatment, with visits to distilleries and riding in the beauty of the Scottish Highlands but the finish of their visit promises to be a unique experience indeed. They are to attend the annual Highland Ball of the Dundee and Perth Polo Club in Perth City Hall. This grand occasion must be one of the very few of it's kind in the world and will leave a lasting memory of their visit to Scotland. You never know it might be there that they find out what Scotsmen like John really wear under their kilts!
