Pammy Hutton endorses our "Chill" Riding boots.
"It is the first time in decades that I have not had chilblains during the winter months," says Pammy, " I am simply delighted with these boots, they are so comfortable.
Even when it was frosty they have kept my feet warm and dry and I never got sweaty feet.
The Easy Rider balance system also works well and I enjoy wearing them whilst in the saddle.
Moreover they are so durable. After four months of wear they still look like new, whilst other boots would by now be nearing the end of their life.
I would thoroughly recommend them for anyone who has to endure the elements."
Pammy Hutton.

Eight Judges Ensure The Best Hunter Wins At The AHJF Hunter Classic
When the American Hunter Jumper Foundation created its now annual Hunter Classic its directors wanted to experiment with a different type of judging system. So, they increased the traditional number of judges who judge the class and teamed them together in pairs of two. In 2000 there were six judges. In 2001 that was increased to eight judges, which is a tradition that continues on into this year’s competition.
The judges are positioned on all sides of the arena because the view of a horse’s performance may differ when seen from different locations in the ring. What one judge can see another may not be able to see because of the angle and how far the fence is from the judge. By positioning judges around the arena it ensures that nothing will be missed and the best hunter of the day wins the class.

Top-Level International Dressage Horses and Riders Compete At The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival
Wellington, Florida -- January 31, 2003 -- Through Sunday, February 2, 2003, the top international dressage horses and riders will be competing at The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival currently going on at The Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club in Wellington. The Festival, in its 31st years, showcases the best horse and rider teams in the equestrian disciplines of hunters, jumpers and dressage. This week, the second of The Wellington Series, jumpers and dressage horses are being featured.
Dressage is a discipline often compared to ballet or figure-skating, with the horses being the dancers and skaters. Taking place “on the flat” (that is, there is no jumping involved) in a ring of a specified dimension, a rider competes at varying levels depending upon the experience and ability of the horse, with more advanced movements being expected of the more experienced horse. The advanced–level performances, on display this week, will leave spectators in awe of the dressage horse’s beautiful range of gaits. One of the discipline’s most-watched levels is the “freestyle”, where horse and rider literally “dance” to music. Dressage is noted for the elegance of both horse and rider.
The international aspect of this week’s competition is exemplified by the competitors who have traveled to Wellington from Germany, Denmark, Canada, Sweden, Mexico, Colombia and the Dominican Republic, to name but a few.

We are leading the world in our research and our initiative to set up clinical trials for spinal injuries, but face our most challenging period of fundraising ever to continue this essential work. Equestrian events and individual supporters have raised £120,000 so far, and we hope to increase this in 2003 with the help of the Federation."

Bob Jeffreys Partnership Training for Horse & Rider January News
“We don’t break horses, we teach horses and riders to make breakthroughs”
Yes …. You Are A Horse Trainer

By Bob Jeffreys
Sometimes in my clinics, I’ll ask the audience, “How many of you are horse trainers?” Usually only one or two hands will go up. When I then ask, “How many ride, feed, groom or otherwise handle horses?” almost all hands are raised. Then I’ll say that everyone who raised their hands either time, are actually “horse trainers”.
Horses, you see, are learning all the time. So whenever we’re around them our actions are teaching them something; sometimes good, sometimes not so good! We must recognize this fact and not let outside influences distract us from the task at hand. We spend many hours teaching our horses to give to the bit; not to pull on the lead rope when tied; to move away from pressure, et. All these things are taught consciously. But when we are talking to a friend while holding our horse sometimes we move our hand so that we accidentally take the slack out of the rope. Before our horse yields to that “request”, we move our hand back to its original position, which returns the slack to the lead rope. What we’ve just subconsciously done is taught our horse that sometimes our requests don’t really count. The same situation would apply when we’re holding the reins either on the horse’s back or on the ground.

Virtual Travel Agent Recommends Personalised Holiday Destinations Worldwide
Vaxjo, Sweden -- 29 January 2003 -- Imagine a travel agency where you just state how you wish to spend your holiday and you'll instantly be recommended perfect destinations. Now it's reality - the travel agent that recommends worldwide destinations based upon your individual interests and preferences. Swedish company Tourism Planet has launched an online hotel reservation system with an advanced recommendation engine technology, adding a new dimension to holiday bookings online.
When consulting hotel reservation portals for a nice place to stay during the holidays, it is standard procedure to first state where you want to go, the final destination. No doubt, this works fine when travelling for business or to well-known places. However, when booking lodging for a holiday with the family, it is seldom the destination in itself that is the most important but how you wish to spend your vacation.
With more than 150,000 holiday lodgings in its database, TourismPlanet.com and its four sister sites propose new and exciting holiday spots suiting the interests and preferences of the individual. The service is similar to that of a regular travel agency, with the only exception that this service gives recommendations equivalent to a 1000 travel agents' accumulated experiences.

Securing The Future Of The Athletes Of The Equine World
We love to watch them. We love to bet on them. We love the excitement of the crowd on race days. But how often do we think of the fate of retired thoroughbreds?
One person who became all too painfully aware of just how insecure the future of a retired racehorse can be is Carrie Humble. After a number of careers in the United States, Carrie returned to the UK and spent much of 1991 helping to prepare thoroughbred stock for sales. "It was then that I saw at first hand just what can happen to a racehorse that has come to the end of its athletic career," she said.
It was then that Carrie came up with the idea of the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre (TRC), and ten years ago she achieved charitable status for the organisation. The TRC's objective is to work with the racing world to try to rehabilitate former racehorses so that they can be re-homed in a caring environment. And visitors to the Midlands Equine Fair taking place at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, on 8 and 9 March, will have the ideal opportunity to see the work of the organisation at first hand as Carrie and her team work some of their equine pupils.

A snapshot of some famous faces at Equus 2003

A huge list of celebrities, of the two-legged and four-legged variety, can be seen at Equus 2003. It really is a showcase for the exciting world of horses; - leading riders will be demonstrating a wide variety of disciplines; including show jumping, dressage, showing, western riding, polo, vaulting and side-saddle. In addition there are specialist horse trainers, displays to music and even stunt riding.

Silke from Germany will be participating with Parelli Natural Horsemanship at Equus for the second time. She is one of their great success stories with her pair of magnificent black Fresian horses. Silke has always loved horses, however, when Silke was only 18, a motorbike accident left her in a wheelchair although that hasn't stopped her achieving incredible things. Now, she can do many things, that few able horse owners ever achieve, such as making her horses lie down on command, amongst a host of other games she plays with them.
World-class displays and demonstrations, seminars, shopping, lots of excitement and celebrities can all be enjoyed at Equus 2003. A trio of specialist clinics with Olympic riders will be held in the evenings at 7.30pm with Pippa Funnell, Geoff Billington and Anky van Grunsven.

Exford Fights Back
Villagers stunned by last minute decision to move Golden Horseshoe Ride
Exford village is fighting back against a decision to move the prestigious Golden Horseshoe endurance ride, scheduled for May 16-18, away from the Exmoor centre it has enjoyed for more than 25 years.
Exford has seen the testing contest - originally 75 miles and now 100 miles over two days - develop alongside the sport now rated as a world event. Competitors have traditionally been stabled in and around the village for the three days and friendly inter-stable rivalry over medals and successes has been intense.
"But we, like the competitors, were told only at the last minute that the organisers, Endurance GB, have moved it to Dunster," said Mrs Beth Horstman, who volunteered to chair the six-man committee.
"We want it back. Exford is the home of the Golden Horseshoe Ride. It is an important event to the economy of the village and estimates have put its value at about £100,000." Accommodation is regularly reserved for Ride dates, and bookings which cannot be recovered, have been turned away.
"A lot of money has been lost already and we know that competitors like Exford and are as upset about the decision as we are," Mrs Horstman said.

The New Jockey Club at The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival Opens to Ooohs and Aaahs
Wellington, Florida – January 29, 2003 – The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival at The Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club began last week with record-setting entries. Now in its 31st year, the Festival welcomes the best horses and riders in the world to compete for over $3 million in prize money during its run in Wellington and Tampa.
Traditionally, in Wellington, a special tent overlooking The International Arena (where the grand prix classes, among others, take place) has been set up to cater to the Festival’s top owners, trainers and riders. With 6-person tables historically ranging in price from $3,000 to $6,000 each, depending upon the location, tent spectators have enjoyed the best view of the top jumper action.
This year, Eugene R. Mische and Stadium Jumping, Inc. decided to upgrade the amenities……thus, the birth of The Jockey Club. Occupying the same space, Stadium Jumping called upon Dougie Mutch of Gracie Street Interiors of West Palm Beach to reconfigure and redecorate the tent. Nicole’s Tavern of Wellington was brought in to serve not only daily lunch, but a continental breakfast as well. Proper linens, silverware, china and stemware have replaced plastic forks and paper plates. Wait-staff now provide individualized service. Crystal chandeliers adorn the ceilings. Flushable toilets (as opposed to out-houses) and sinks with running water are now available to Jockey Club members only.

Showing World Now Takes Search For A Star Seriously!
New selection venues in Surrey and Yorkshire
The South Essex Insurance Brokers Search for a Star competition starts its eighth year with a frank statement from one of its judges - "at last the professionals are taking us seriously."
Anne Pritchard, who with Robert Oliver has judged every final since the search began, said: "We have found some wonderful horses, but because the competition is for amateurs and because we give a running commentary and explain our decisions, many of the top people in the showing world refused to take us seriously.
"Now I look around the audience at the Horse of the Year Show final and recognise so many faces; then I listen to Search for a Star owners talking about the offers they are refusing for their horses and realise that this competition really has been accepted into the showing calendar."
Search for a Star is designed to give amateur owners and riders the opportunity to compete at a major, national show. Selection days are held around the country and chosen horses are invited to the prestigious Horse of the Year Show, to be held for the second time at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham. Last year's launch at the NEC was a resounding success and this year it is scheduled for September 17-21.

Horses Help Hands On Students
3 horses from an equine welfare centre in South Norfolk are going out on loan this week to Otley College, near Ipswich where they will take up residence to help students with their studies.
ILPH McGill, Sneezy and Molly will help students in the practical element of the Horse Management and Animal Science courses as well as hands on therapy for special needs students on Rural Therapy Courses.
Says Tony Tyler, ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) Manager at Hall Farm, Snetterton, "The 3 horses that we are loaning the College have been especially chosen for their kind natures and ease of handling.
"Although McGill was not a cruelty case, the other two were, and it's good to know that horses that have been abused themselves will be instrumental in educating young people about good horse welfare."
Comments Gerda Werner, Equine Lecturer at Otley College, "Otley College is delighted to have the ILPH horses spend time with our students. Our Horse Management students are particularly looking forward to putting their stable management theory into practice.

Women Dominate The Field On Super Bowl Sunday In The $50,000 EMO Grand Prix
Indio, CA (January 27, 2003)--As Tampa Bay and the Raiders were battling it out in a rough-and-tumble Super Bowl, four women rose above a field of twenty-one entries to compete in the jump-off for the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix. English rider, Helen McNaught and her mount Lexicon were the final victors in the special Grand Prix class, which was the highlight of Sunday's competition at the HITS Indio Desert Circuit.
Course designer Danny Foster was responsible for building a challenging course that only four riders could master. The first to perform, Misti Cassar on Pasadena, made the going look easy with a faultless round in 88.9 seconds, well within the time allowed of 103. The following eleven riders could not match her opener and it was the twelfth in the order, McNaught, who gave the crowd the second clear round. Laura Linback on her second mount, Grand Soso 2, saw her way clear also, and Susan Hutchinson on Itano De La Bastide delivered the last clear round of the field.

The Hackney Horse
The Hackney Horse is an elegant high stepping breed of carriage horse entirely British bred.
It made its appearance in the 18th century in Yorkshire and Norfolk in the UK and quickly became the ideal carriage horse of the day - only to be replaced by the motor car in the 1920's.
Today, Hackney Horses and Ponies are renowned for their brilliant and extravagant displays of high stepping action in the show ring. Pulling smart four-wheeled show wagons or immaculate in Private Drive or Concourse d'Elegance turnouts, they captivate audiences worldwide with their grace, elegant bearing and lively personality. What many people do not know is how the Hackney and Hackney Pony evolved from quite humble origins to become through two centuries of selective breeding, one of the most spectacular of British breeds
.Although modern Hackneys may often be regarded as specialised animals, suitable for their showing role, this is far from the truth. In the driving world as well as being recognised as the superlative animal for Concours d'Elegance, Private Driving, Trade and Coaching classes, Hackneys and Hackney cross-breds compete with great success in the taxing disciplines of Carriage Driving Trials. They also perform successfully in ridden dressage, eventing and show jumping. Breeders are once again looking at these remarkable horses when making plans for the breeding of competition horses and ponies, for the hackney's attributes of quality, courage, activity and great strength, qualify him for serious consideration in the breeding of the modern Sports Horse.

Dressage World Cup at San Patrignano
For the second consecutive year, the only Italian qualifier for the FEI Dressage World Cup will take place in San Patrignano. From Saturday 25th to Sunday 26th 2003, the indoor arena of the leading community in Europe for the rehabilitation and social re-integration of drug addicts will host the Italian stage of the most important international dressage competition: the FEI World Cup.
The event, as underlined by Giacomo Muccioli, responsible of San Patrignano's sports events, will open a very important year for the rehabilitation community founded by Vincenzo Muccioli in 1978. "In 2003 San Patrignano will celebrate its 25th anniversary. It is indeed a very important goal for all of us and not only for its symbolic meaning: since 1978 we have welcomed 18.000 guests, most of them enjoying today a drug-free existence. During these years our community has become a significant cultural and methodological point of reference for all those operating in the field of drug addiction. Thanks to our horse linked activities, such as breeding and the organisation of International jumping and dressage competitions, we have been able to spread our message and let people learn about the human and social reality of San Patrignano. Furthermore, the FEI Dressage World Cup represents the first stage of a path taking us to host the 2005 European Jumping Show Championships: an unprecedented event in the history of sports."

German poker at San Patrignano
The repetition of the number four seems to be the rule adopted by the strong German team, at San Patrignano for the Italian Dressage World Cup qualifier: four competition, four victories, four lady riders at the top four places of the final standings of the Free Style Grand Prix, closing competition of the event.
Report of an announced victory for Monica Theodorescu, an athlete able to gain from '98 until today, five team golden medals including World Championships, European Championships and Olympic games. She reached the top of the podium with an impeccable test, perfectly performed on her Renaissance Fleur, scoring the very high percentage of 77,69%. On this horse Ms. Wert wrote the last 10 years' history of this discipline: 12 team golden medals including Olympic Games and European Championships and golden individual medals both at Atlanta '96 and to two World Championships.

Machine Washing Leather Chaps
By Anna Carner Blangiforti, President and Founder, Leather Therapy Products
OLDWICK, NJLeather chaps become one of your most personal garments. When new, they can be stiff, ornery, too tight in some spots, not tight enough in others. They wrinkle and bite flesh in some places, cut off the circulation in others. Over time, however, they stretch and soften. They mold to your unique anatomy and become so individual that no one else can wear them.
Over time, they also accumulate a patina of grime. Chaps are working garments. They get splattered with mud, marinated in sweat, and rub up against their share of manure, dust, chaff, and other dirty debris commonly found around barns.
Riders might be scrupulous about wearing clean jeans and shirts, but until recently, there wasn’t much they could do about their chaps. Some have tried washing chaps but the only laundry products available for leather to date have been detergent-type cleaners which remove dirt but do not replace the lubricating oils in the leather’s inner corium. The leather dries stiff and is actually weakened by the cleaning process. The only alternative has been to let the chaps become starched with sweat and grunge until the accumulated dirt destroyed the leather from the inside out. Then you just had to grit your teeth and go through the expense and agony of breaking in a new pair.
Thanks to the molecular synergy between two recently developed companion leather care products, however, riders can now safely wash suede or smooth-leather chaps in their home washing machine and recondition the leather at the same time. The cleaner works during the wash cycle to deep clean dirt and leave leather fibers with a negative ionic charge that attracts the more positively charged conditioning dressing during the rinse cycle. Riders can now throw grungy, hard-working leathers like chaps, half chaps, leather-seated breeches, and sheepskin saddle pads in their washing machine and pull them out cleaned, softened and suppled.

AHJF Has A Winner In Its Annual Hunter Classic
The American Hunter Jumper Foundation Continues to Achieve Its Goals
Seven years ago when the American Hunter-Jumper Foundation, Inc. (AHJF) decided to debut the first ever AHJF Hunter Classic it was the beginning of a new vision for the sport of show hunter competition. The concept was to have a very special class, different than what had been done in the past. The class would premiere in the evening under lights, offer the largest prize money purse in the history of show hunter competition and serve a fine dinner affording spectators a quality view of the class. All of this was designed around the needs of the exhibitors and created to serve as the single largest fundraiser of the AHJF. Money from the fundraiser would enable the organization to continue its many programs geared to benefit hunter horses and riders. As the years pass the Hunter Classic continues to achieve its goals.
