West Country Witheridge Hold Their Own
Witheridge Riding Club have fun at The Festival
Having successfully competed in our area Hunter Trial qualifier held at Pontispool Farm in Taunton on Sunday 7th April, our Senior Open and Junior Novice teams set off for the championships, held as part of “The Festival of the Hunter” at Grange Farm, Peterborough. This was quite an undertaking as it included a 500 mile round trip!
The Senior Open teams campaign started with disappointment when Rachel Davey’s horse, Fluta had to be pulled up on course due to an injury. Carol Hayes and Natalie Bucklar lifted the Witheridge hopes when they both completed clear rounds with just a few time penalties between them. Claire Wilson, final team member, not only went clear but also proved to be the fastest competitor of the day, completing her fantastic round in the exact optimum time. It was later discovered that Claire was the only competitor not to exceed the time limit from 450 taking part!
The superb efforts of the girls meant that not only did Witheridge take the honours in the team competition but Claire also picked up the individual prize, winning a sash, ribbon and a silver salver trophy, the second national trophy for the club. This proved to be a really exciting day for Claire who, earlier that morning had also taken the Working Hunter Championship receiving yet another sash and ribbon presented to her by KBIS Insurance, sponsors of the show.

The Only Sure Thing at Saratoga is an Upset
Lexington, KY (May 24, 2002) Eclipse Press announces the publication of Graveyard of Champions: Saratoga’s Fallen Favorites.
Man o’ War lost there. So did Secretariat. And so have a host of other champions who seemed a “sure thing.” Over the years, Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York, has gained a reputation as a place where heavy favorites lose with seeming regularity. The elite late-summer race meeting at “the Spa” attracts the best horses in the nation, increasing the chances that a big horse will be defeated in a major race thus the track’s nickname “the Graveyard of Champions.”
Author Bill Heller traces the history of this phenomenon from the racetrack’s beginnings in the 1860s to the present day in Graveyard of Champions: Saratoga’s Fallen Favorites. He examines the defeat of champions such as Hamburg, who went down at 1-3 in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes in 1897; Gallant Fox, defeated at 1-2 in the 1930 Travers; and Stymie’s 1947 loss at 2-5 in the Whitney Handicap. He also takes a look at the upsets of modern-day stars such as Lonesome Glory and Skip Away.

Lack Of BBC Live Coverage
After watching the minimal coverage of Badminton HT 2002, I was personally disgusted with the quality of the outside broadcast. It was appalling that they only showed 200 minutes in total and that none of it was live.
When thinking about Burghley and Gatcombe and the rest of the big events, it tends to be the same story. It is minimal coverage and most of its not live.
As the BBC has said they cannot afford to cover such events. My personal view is, if they can afford to cover numerous football matches or other sports on a weekly basis surely it wouldn't hurt to sacrifice these when the once a year Equestrian Events are on. It's not like they're on regularly.
Why is it that although we are achieving as a country in these events, they are given a backseat to the televised coverage.
In the past we have won numerous medals and as individuals taken to trophies and titles. These are equal in meritocracy to football and any other sport.

In addition to watching the nation’s top horses and riders compete for prestigious prizes, kids can take part in the wide variety of fun and games offered throughout the day.
The annual Hampton Classic Horse Show, one of the nation’s premier show jumping competitions, returns to Bridgehampton, NY for its 27th year. Leslie Morse Stays in England to Train and Compete with Four Time Olympian Kyra Kyrklund
American dressage rider Leslie Morse and her stallion Kingston will stay in England through 2002 to continue working with four time Olympian Kyra Kyrklund. The pair arrived in England in March for a two-month training session as recipients of a United States Equestrian Team Grant. The coaching has been so successful that Morse was determined to find a way to stay. "We have made so much progress," Morse said. "I really feel this is a big year for Kingston and there is nothing he needs more than to continue with this highly focused, high-level training."
Morse found the two months with Kyrklund to be absolutely invaluable. "The time I have spent with Kyra has felt like a real luxury," she said. "I haven't had this type of in-depth assistance for a long, long time." Although Kingston routinely receives scores of 8s and 9s on his dressage tests, Kyrklund has really helped Morse fine tune the 17.2 hand stallion.

The Chill Buster Riding Boot
The most complete riding boot ever built

The specification of this boot includes everything a rider is ever likely to need
At least 70% of riders are female and 80% of females frequently suffer from cold feet. For them the "Chill Buster" will be very welcome. It keeps the feet at body temperature whatever the weather and the waterproof leather keeps them dry.
The Easy Rider balance system stops your feet slipping out of the stirrup irons and makes you more secure in the saddle.
The steel toe cap which protects your toes is so well concealed that it cannot be felt nor seen. You simply would not know it was there until the day it saved your toes. The rot proof leather and soles mean that wet beds or muck heaps are no problem and the boots are very durable. The high counters in the heel give you ankle support and are designed for use with a spur. The collar is snug and has been designed for the use of gaiters or half chaps. The stitched in tongue stops shavings penetrating and sticking to your socks and therefore prevents the clogging up the filter in your washing machine.

A Competitive Edge For Horses
Swentana has a theory about competitive equestrian animals in that they can, like us humans, give more once their personal energy is addressed as a separate issue. She has already proven this fact with humans and now she wants to show horse owners and trainers that her “energizing” techniques can enhance the animal’s strength and mental vitality. Her approach has already proven itself in horse competitions---current users refer to it as “acupuncture without needles."

Hot or Cold Shoeing: What is your Farrier Doing?.
One of the hottest issues in today's horseshoeing industry is the concept of shoe fitting. If you were to gather a group of farriers and initiate a round table discussion on this topic, you would find yourself in the middle of a heated debate.
This debate, however, is not a new one. As early as 1890 a book, entitled The Practical Horseshoer, clearly illustrated opposition among many prominent farriers and with a bit of poignancy, M.T. Richardson summarized it best:
"The advocates of each system of fitting are numerous, but the weight of evidence seems to be in favor of cold fitting, in theory, and more or less hot, in practice."

Logo Change For Robinsons
A brand new logo will feature on robinsons New "Spring" and "New for 2002" catalogues which are out this month. In addition to a much more modern oval shape, the company will also be removing the words "Country Leisure". Marketing Manager, Paul Bentham explained why:
"When I talk to any of our customers, it's quite clear that we're always known simply as "Robinsons". The word "Country Leisure" had become a little confusing because we have not stocked any shooting or fishing items for years. We are dedicated soley to horse-owners and riders everywhere and we wanted to reflect that, which is why instead of a dot above the "i" there is a small horseshoe. Even though some things needed a change, we really like our strong colour scheme, so we were very keen to keep the green in the logo. Another important thing we wanted to say about ourselves is that we are extremely customer-friendly The white crescent represents a smile and the star (or the "ting", as we call it), just adds to the effect. Both Amazon and Argos have "smiles" in their logos and we liked the idea too!"
