NHJC Presents Inaugural National Finals Horse Show
The NHJC is teaming up with the
organizers of the Capital Challenge Horse Show (Maryland) to host the first
annual NHJC National Finals Horse Show. Special championships will be presented
in each of the rated hunter and jumper divisions, as well as the Capital
Challenge/NHJC Equitation Classic. In keeping with the goal of including all
twelve zones, each zone is eligible to send one entry per division. This year,
horses will qualify for their respective hunter and jumper divisions based on
AHSA Zone Horse of the Year standings as of August 1, 2001.

SAUGERTIES, NY (June 15, 2001)--Horse Shows In The
Sun has announced that HITS Tahoe, the new four-week hunter/jumper horse show
circuit in Minden, Nevada, is introducing a new event for spectators this
year--Seniors Day Presented by Douglas County Senior Services. On Sunday, July
22, from 10am to 1pm, seniors will be admitted free to the show grounds and
free bus service to and from the event will be supplied by the Douglas County
Seniors Center. Event organizer Warren Bottino of the Douglas County Senior
Services is working with the Douglas County Library staff and HITS to present a
grand finale to the final day of the circuit starting with a 5K Run and Fun
Walk and a Horse Shoe Tournament, and concluding with the $100,000 Rio Vista
Grand Prix.

Nationally Recognized Polo event to Benefit Children's
Hospital @ Albany Medical Center for second year.
Owl Creek Polo Club of West Glenville, New York,
is hosting its fifth annual Charlie's Angels Women's Polo Tournament, scheduled
for August 25-26. Sanctioned by the US Polo Association, female Polo players
from all over the United States and Canada can be expected to participate in
the tournament, and draws much press nationally. These top female athletes, are
expected to ring at least 100 horses to the area to compete in a 2 day event
where they will separated into 8 teams. The preliminary matches will take place
on Saturday, the finals will be on Sunday behind Beukendaul Fire Department on
Sacandaga Road in Glenville. They will start approx. 10:00 am and continue
throughout early afternoon. This event is one of few exclusively for women, and
the largest in the Northeast United States. The introductory levels of this
tournament introduces many women for the first time, to competitive polo,
allowing them to play their fullest potential.

New Blue Ribbon Streak
6/10/01 Fort Collins Colorado.
Though surrounded by mares from the university reproductive facility O'Leary's
Irish Diamond continued his impressive competition streak in Colorado. The
seven-year-old Irish Draught Stallion has earned at least one blue ribbon in
each of his four competitions in Colorado. His medium score being above 65
percent at 3rd level |
"He talked but he still did his
business", said observer Jennifer Frisbee. "He looks like such a
happy horse", she added. Irish has been competing for the second year at
3rd level. His average score has improved over last year. His rider, former
USET team member Grant Schneidman, is avoiding 4th level competition until
Irish perfects some of the technical demands of 3rd level. Schneidman worked
Irish three days with US Olympic team Chef De Quip Jessica Ransehousen. It was
agreed that though he is doing higher level work, it was important that he
perfect his work at 3rd level. They agreed he is an international quality horse
but he needed some work on his changes and collection before moving into the
international competition arena.

Kids Day, July 8, at HITS
Tahoe Horse Show in Minden, Nevada |
SAUGERTIES, NY (June 14, 2001)--Horse Shows In The
Sun has announced that the second annual Kids Day at the HITS Tahoe horse show
circuit in Minden, Nevada, will be held on Sunday, July 8, 2001, from 10:00am
to 1:00pm. Officially titled "Resort Sports Network's Kids Day presented
by Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department and the Douglas County
Library," the event will provide free admission and free fun activities
for children 12 and under. A full acre of the 100-acre HITS Tahoe show grounds
will be devoted to Kids Day and the line-up of fun-and-games booths, live
entertainment, and educational exhibits. More than 1,000 children and their
parents are expected to attend.

HITS Tahoe Charity
Partners Benefit From Horse Show Ticket Sales |
SAUGERTIES, NY (June 13, 2001)-Horse Shows In The
Sun is presenting HITS Tahoe, a four-week hunter/jumper horse show circuit,
from June 27 to July 22, in Minden, Nevada, for the second consecutive year,
and is again working with local charities that will benefit from ticket sales.
HITS Tahoe horse shows will be held Wednesday through Sunday with free
admission every day except Sunday, when adults pay $5 each. The proceeds are
donated to the charities that have partnered with HITS. Last year five Carson
Valley charities each received a check for $1,227. In addition to a percentage
of the total gate, the five charities were allowed to keep all of the money for
tickets sold before the show-several of the charities each pre-sold more than
200 tickets, and one group sold over 300. This year, HITS is working with nine
charities in the Carson Valley.

The Armathwaite Hall Strongid-P Horse Trials &
Country Fair has become the latest victim of foot and mouth disease with news
that DEFRA (formerly MAFF) has withdrawn the approval to go ahead with the
event given just over a week ago.
Current veterinary risk assessments recommend that
no equestrian event should be held on agricultural land in an infected area and
DEFRA officials, after further specific consideration of the Armathwaite Hall
fixture, contacted the organisers to withdraw permission on Monday, confirming
that the event could not be made an exception.
Event joint organiser Charles Graves said,
"In order to contain foot and mouth disease, DEFRA has felt it necessary
to ensure that movements in this area remain restricted and confirmed to us
yesterday that this year’s event should be cancelled.

The Devil’s Horsemen, are busy preparing an awesome display of stunts,
trick riding, acrobatics, and fast-moving action ready to entertain, fascinate,
and astonish the expected audience of 50,000 at this year’s Horse of the
Year Show (2nd - 7th October) at Wembley Arena.
Daniel Naprous, an astonishing horseman and
stuntman, is no stranger to the limelight. In recent years, Daniel has been
doubling for Hollywood stars, such as Timothy Dalton, John Lithgoe, Goran
Visnjic, Rutger Hauer, Pierce Brosnan and performing equestrian stunts for some
of the biggest film and television blockbusters.

More Shows Cancelled
As MAFF(UK) duties are taken over by
the new Department for Enviroment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) further
equestrian events and shows are being forced to cancel. Events and shows given
the go ahead just days before lasts weeks British general election are now
finding themselves forced to end plans for 2001. This is a further blow for the
struggling equestrian industry in the UK, which industry experts estimate is
loosing between £100,000,000 and £200,000,000 a week as a direct
result of foot and mouth. Already a number of equestrian companies and
magazines have ceased trading, with more set to follow. So far pleas by
industry representives for grant aid have fallen on deaf ears. |

AIRC Cancels Festival But Confirms Other National Events
Association of Irish Riding Clubs
Chairman, Peter Roberts, reported today (Tuesday June 13) that the AIRC
Executive Committee have, after careful consideration of all factors, cancelled
their 2-day Festival at Tattersalls for 2001. The enforced change of dates from
the more suitable June Bank Holiday weekend, together with a full assessment of
the financial implications, have influenced this decision.

A New Business Straight from the
Horse’s Mouth

Kim Keppick stumbled onto a rewarding business
opportunity when, in a last ditch attempt to get her student’s horse to
relax and accept the bit, she attached one end of a pair of elastic side reins
to the horse’s bit and handed the other end to her student. As the student
rode off, to her amazement, the horse dropped his head and relaxed. According
to Kim, “that’s when a light bulb went off for me.” To the
horse, the give of the elastic simulated the soft feel of a highly skilled
rider’s hands.
At first, Kim did not expect the elastic rein
inserts she tinkered with to turn into a full-fledged business. “I just
wanted something practical for myself and a few other trainers.” She and
the leather workers at Journeymen developed prototypes with all kinds of
different designs. As Kim described, “all the designs helped the problem,
but some were too heavy or too bulky or had too much stretch or not
enough.” Kim sent the prototypes that worked best to other trainers for
their feedback. The other trainers’ responses proved that getting a horse
to relax and accept the bit was a common problem. Kim said, “thanks to the
positive responses I got from the trainers, and most importantly the horses, I
kept trying different prototypes until I found a design that worked. Then,
having proved that there was a need, I patented the design and turn it into a
business.”

Slough Man found Guilty of Abandoning
Pony
Today at Lyndhurst Magistrates Court, Leigh
Lawrence, 40, of Slough, Bucks was found guilty of abandoning a Shetland pony
with deformities in a manner likely to cause it unnecessary suffering contrary
to the 1960 Abandonment of Animals Act. Lawrence was ordered to pay £540
costs to the ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) and
£150 costs to the Court.

SAUGERTIES, NY (June 11, 2001)-HITS has announced
that the Outdoor Life Network will re-broadcast the $100,000 Grand Prix of
Ocala presented by Great American Insurance Companies Inc. on Tuesday, June 12
at 8:00 pm and 11:00 pm Eastern Standard Time. The event was previously
televised on May 22. Filmed on March 11, 2001, at the Golden Hills
International Show Grounds in Ocala, Florida, the footage shows the unique
event in which the Millar family of Perth, Ontario, placed first, second and
third in this high-stakes class.

Lennon Wins Modena Grand Prix
In a remarkable double, two Irish
riders have now won major European Grands Prix within the last 48 hours.
Dermott Lennon from Co. Down this afternoon (Sunday) completed the double when
he snatched the prestigious Modena Grand Prix held at the Pavarotti Horse Show
in Italy, and prize money of £55,000 (35 million lira).

The Ties That Bind

"The ONLY way to have a friend is
to be one," Ralph Waldo Emerson wisely pointed out, and his advice can
aptly be applied to our relationships with horses. The horses in the greatest
need of a friend, however, are often the most difficult to befriend. How do you
get physically let alone emotionally close to a horse who's busy biting,
rearing, and bucking? Or to the horse who's a bundle of nerves and shies for
the seemingly smallest of reasons? In other words, how do you help anxious,
distrustful, and downright nasty horses? |
Horseman and clinician Frank Bell, Larkspur,
Colo., does it with kindness. Having built his own particular brand of horse
handling on the cornerstones of touch and intimacy, he's created a seven-step
safety program he teaches in 3-day clinics around the world and demonstrates at
fund-raisers for therapeutic riding groups. Last year he raised $25,000 for
North American Riding for the Handicapped Association centers across the
country. The philosophy underlying Bell's work is straightforward: Lasting,
positive behavior changes come about as a result of the give and take of any
close friendship. "It's like with people," he says. "You want to
develop a rapport with someone before you ask them to do something for you. If
you give, give,give to horses, then they'll want to give back."

Another Irish Army Win At Lisbon
With two wins already in the bag at
Lisbon's four-star event, including yesterday's £20,000 Grand Prix, the
Irish Army riders did it again this morning (Saturday) when Lt. Shane Carey set
a blistering pace in the <OCIDENTAL SEGUROS>jump-off with the Irish-bred
Killossery, and left the rest of the field unable to match him.

Show Jumping Result - Army Rider Wins Lisbon Grand Prix
In his most spectacular win yet this
season, the Army Equitation School's Lt. David O'Brien snatched the Lisbon
four-star Grand Prix today (June 8) from some of the strongest opposition he
has yet faced, and picked up prize money of almost £20,000.
O'Brien has already scored a class win at Modena, and last month took three
consecutive Firsts at Le Mans.

NTRA Purchases Digital Fingerprint
Machine For National Racing Compact
Robin Williams, chairman of the National Racing
Compact (NRC), announced today that the National Thoroughbred Racing
Association (NTRA) has agreed to purchase a portable, digital fingerprint
machine for the Compact. |
Mrs. Williams stated, "We are thrilled that
the NTRA has provided the funding for a state of the art, inkless fingerprint
machine," she said. "We want to take the licensing process to the
applicants. With a digital machine and a digital camera, we can go on the road,
go to the tracks, go to the association meetings, and sign up lots of people
quickly and easily."
