33rd Annual Lake Placid Horse Show Opens Wednesday


Lake Placid, NY – June 25, 2002 – The 33rd annual Lake Placid Horse Show opens Wednesday with more than 1300 horses and the nation’s best show jumping riders on hand to compete for $360,000 prize money. The Lake Placid Horse Show runs at the North Elba Showgrounds through Sunday and is followed by the 25th annual I Love New York Horse Show, July 3-7.

McLain Ward of Brewster, NY and Margie Goldstein-Engle of Wellington, FL, the top two ranked riders on the U.S. Equestrian Team (USET) Show Jumping Rider List, head the list of entries. Ward and Engle finished one-two this past Sunday in the $50,000 Rolex USET Show Jumping Championship at the USET Olympic Training Center in Gladstone, NJ. Ward, who placed fourth in this year’s Show Jumping World Cup Final in Leipzig, Germany, won the Championship on Viktor, while Engle, a 2000 Sydney Olympian, placed second on Hidden Creek’s Perin.

The two Lake Placid horse shows host two American Grandprix Association (AGA) Grandprix Series events, the $50,000 Budweiser Grandprix of Lake Placid Presented by Jaguar/Land Rover for the Whitney Perpetual Challenge Trophy on Sunday, June 30 and the $50,000 I Love New York Grandprix on Saturday, July 6.

In addition to the two AGA Grand Prix Series events, the schedule also includes North American League (NAL) classes, Adult/Children's Jumper events and Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic series events for junior riders and amateur/owner riders on Sunday, June 30 and Saturday, July 6. There are also numerous hunter and equitation divisions including World Championship Hunter Rider Classes and Hunter Classics.

The Lake Placid horse shows feature four rings of action with competition running from 8:00 a.m. to late afternoon, Wednesday through Sunday each week. Admission to the Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows is just $2.00 on weekdays and $5.00 on weekends. Children under the age of 12 are admitted free. Tickets are available at the gate.
