horse Show Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - O'Brien Steals Limerick Super League Show

EXCITEMENT and temperatures both ran high at Limerick today (Sunday) as the lead in the Super League Grand Prix changed hands several times, and with major upsets occurring in the overall rankings.

Lt. David O'Brien on <Boherdeal Clover> was an early Grand Prix leader, and seemed unbeatable, until Peter Smyth on <Zara's Pride>, fourth last in the jump-off, set a scorching pace that put him into first place. But O'Brien had an ace up his sleeve in the form of <Carraig Dubh>, and, second-last to jump, shaved fractions of a second off the Ulsterman's time to re-take the pole position.

An expected showing by League leader Harry Marshall did not materialise, so the Super League points won by O'Brien and Smyth have now unseated Marshall, who drops to third overall.

James Kernan and Shane Breen also improved their League positions today, with a fourth and fifth, respectively, while Breen also took sixth with <Luandra>.

After his win in the searing heat at Limerick, Lt. David O'Brien said of <Carraig Dubh>: <<The little horse tried his heart out over a very good jump-off track, and we came through in the end. James Tarrant is to be congratulated for the standard of his course building.>>

Marshall will now have an uphill struggle to claw his way back to the top of the League, as Smyth has opened a substantial gap of 11 points.
