Ireland Dominates Schools And Pony Club Championship

Ireland swept the board at this year’s National Schools and Pony Club Jumping Championship on August 23, with teams from the Iveagh Pony Club taking the title
and two equal-second places in the Pony Club Championship, Loreto Senior College from Mullingar winning the senior title and Gorey Community School,
County Wexford, in the runner-up spot.

The Junior title went to Llandovery College in Wales.

Nearly 400 riders made the journey to the All England Jumping Course, Hickstead, for the championship, with qualifying teams in all three sections going forward to the International Arena to compete over courses built by Bob Ellis, who only days before had built and designed tracks at the prestigious British Jumping Derby Meeting.

Iveagh fielded three teams in the National Pony Club Championship, with Team 1 finishing on only four faults, Members were Darren McAlinden riding The
Gangsters Diamond, Ross Mulholland and Zambocca, Lisa Priestley with Dolly’s Buzz and Angela Percy on Jim’s Choice.

Teams 2 and 3 were equal second together with the Old Berkeley Hunt (North) Pony Club.

Loreto Senior College from Mullingar lowered only one pole on their route to the title, well clear of Gorey Community School’s 12 faults. Winners were
Gina Crighton and Lara Croft, Andrea Cullen with Baussy Jones and Aoife (rpt Aoife) Hynes riding Johnney Rainbow. Equal third were Millfield School,
from Somerset, and Surrey’s Cranleigh School.

The Junior Champions, from Llandovery College, Wales, were Felix McCartney on Trafilian Talisman, Oliver Griffiths riding Trench Cassanova and Sara
Williams with Welsh Wonder. Last year’s winners, Winchester House School, from Brackley in Northamptonshire, slipped into second place and Homewood
School, Tenterden in Kent, were third.

Style prizes throughout the meeting went to Sophie Beaveridge from The Kingsley School, Warwickshire, Grace Irwin of the Iveagh Pony Club, Maria
Dwyer from Gorey Community School and Georgie Spence from Stonar School, Melksham in Wiltshire.
