World Equestrian Games gold medalist profiled in Badminton video

American equestrian Amy Tryon, is among the personalities profiled in the recently released video documentary "Backstage at Badminton: Eventing's Supreme Challenge". VHS Copies of the program may be purchased on-line at www.SportsQuestInternational.com, or by telephone on (1) 800-872-9462 (Catalog # 9382).

A firefighter from Redmond, Washington, Tryon, won a team gold medal Sunday at the 2002 World Equestrian Games, in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, as a member of the victorious United States three-day eventing squad. Highlights of an interview with Tryon's teammate, Olympic Champion David O'Connor, are also included in the video presentation. The World Equestrian Games format incorporates the official world championships of seven equestrian disciplines.

A true amateur, Tryon's performance in Spain caps a magical season in which she placed second at the Foxhall Cup in Georgia (USA), on Woodstock; third at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event, on Poggio II; and eleventh in her first try at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials (UK), on My Beau. She was a team gold medalist and fourth individually in the 1999 Pan American Games.

Tryon gives credit to her co-workers, and a supportive spouse, for making it possible for her to combine a full time career with international competition. "I have a great schedule", says the thirty one year old, "so I work ten days a month, and the guys at work work for me when I'm gone competing. And then, when I get home, I work for them... I work with a super bunch of people".

In an era of multimillion dollar sports sponsorships, Tryon has found a way to succeed on the international stage without the benefit of major corporate underwriting. "This is a just a two person show", she says, "my husband and I finance this all on our own".

Produced by SportsQuest International, "Backstage at Badminton..." examines the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials from the perspective of riders, coaches, grooms, key members of the horse trials staff, volunteers and regular visitors to the event. The program is offered to broadcasters throughout the world by London based Prima Television International (Telephone: (44) 20-7739-8288; Fax: (44) 20-7739-1288).

The Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials is traditionally among the most well attended fixtures on the European sporting calendar, consistently drawing crowds of 250,000 plus for the cross-country phase. Scripted by noted equestrian journalist, Christine E. Stafford and directed by SportsQuest's senior producer, Melvin Cox, the program includes excerpts from interviews with Badminton Horse Trials Director, Hugh Thomas; Horse Trials Secretary, Jane Tuckwell; Badminton Stable Manager and Stud Groom, Brian Higham, and 2002 champion, Pippa Funnell.

Conversations with former champions Bill Roycroft, Capt. Mark Phillips, O'Connor, and Mark Todd highlight the presentation. Also included are the comments of Margaret Runcie, who witnessed the first Badminton Horse Trials in 1949, and Lorna Clarke, who completed the event a record 23 times.

Katrina Barclay hosts this special edition of "With Equestrian Tact: The International Video Magazine of the Equestrian Sports".
