22nd Dec 2001 Masterfoods To Sponsor Burghley
Masterfoods, the new identity for Mars’ food and pet care businesses in the UK, has announced that it will be title sponsor of the Burghley Horse Trials in 2002 and 2003. The sponsorship will be titled the Burghley Masterfoods Horse Trials.
Mike Davies, Managing Director of Masterfoods said: “We are delighted to have signed this agreement. As a sporting occasion, Burghley Horse Trials is unequalled in its ability to provide sport and entertainment in a unique setting and is a wonderful commercial partner for Masterfoods.
Although Burghley’s previous sponsor Pedigree® is part of the Masterfoods brand portfolio, this is not the same sponsor by a different name; this is very much a new sponsorship. The other brands within the Mars group have had a small presence at Burghley during the time of the Pedigree® sponsorship but it is now our intention to increase their presence dramatically and use the event to promote the family of Masterfoods products.”

Navicular Syndrome
© Equine Management, Auction, and Appraisal Services, Inc
Navicular syndrome is so called because a number of conditions may cause the pathological changes and clinical signs, and many structures may be involved. The navicular bone lies on the back of the coffin bone, with the navicular bursa, a small fluid-filled sac, between them .The small boat-shaped bone serves as a pulley for the deep flexor tendon that glides along its underside. Navicular syndrome is a degenerative process that can affect the bone, bursa or tendon
This condition occurs almost exclusively in the front feet, and usually affects both feet. The first signs of navicular are a shortening of the stride and slight unevenness on turns. Because both forefeet are affected simultaneously, obvious lameness is not commonly observed. Instead, the horse appears reluctant to go forward properly or lengthen his stride. Pointing is another common sign; the horse will stand at rest with one leg extended, the weight resting on the toe. When the foot is pressure tested, the horse will usually indicate pain at the heels. X-rays do not always detect early signs of navicular since the soft tissues are usually the first problem areas. The cartilage on the underside of the navicular bone and the deep flexor tendon become inflamed first.

A Horse, of Course with Don Blazer
I walked passed Walter's stall, peeked in and saw him dunking his hay in his water bucket.
I hate it when he does that. "Hey," I said. "Why do you do that?"
"Hay," he said. "I like it wet and soggy and drippy and messy. And it turns the water the darkest green color. I like that."
"You don't like that," I countered. "You just do it to irritate me. I
think you've got a lot of gall."
"No gall at all," he said with a smile. "Horses don't have a gall
bladder," he informed me. It was a fact I already knew, so I just ignored it. Sometimes ignoring him is the best thing you can do.

Did You Ever Wonder Where They Came From??
The death of their owner left them in the care of a family member who either didn't know or care how to take proper care of them. They existed with infrequent feeding, hoof and medical care for years. The property they lived on also suffered neglect. The once cute barn became filled to the brim with uncleaned stalls and thousands of empty cat food cans. Once the horses could no longer use it, the under house garage became their shelter.
It was also a scary place for horses, with metal, glass, wood, wire, and lawn mowing equipment to share it with. The fences were in deplorable shape, with some chain link wire sinking down the poles and curling upwards inside their paddock. The height of the sunken fence added with the snowdrifts made it possible for them to walk over the area. With 6 or more inches of sharp rusty wire pointing to the sky on their side, it was a horrible accident waiting to happen. Well an accident did happen, and no one knows for sure how. No one saw or heard it so speculation remains.
